Z-Man! 1) I was in the zone, I don't know what happened but both filming and editing was breeze on this episode. I lucked out and it's not always like that. Maybe I felt more comfortable because I knew they probably weren't understanding my narrative so I didn't feel ridiculed. You know what I'm saying? 2) Mavic Pro, I bought it during a black friday bundle deal for $899. Just got back home and I got a price adjustment on it because now it's on sale for $799. So that's sweet. But I'll return it for the Mavic Air once I can get back from another trip I'm about to go on (and need this drone). 3) Yeah bro, just remember: there's always someone out there harvesting with no shoes. 4) Rather than the dumpster I threw them in the sink and soaked them. Luckily that mud is super runny, soft dirt so they cleaned up pretty well actually. Just thought I'd add a little drama in the mix. But I was covered in mud waist down from all the splashing and deep holes I stepped in. Fun time! I've been thinking about our telephone conversation and I have a single solid idea. Matt, great video! I can relate, as wife is from Brazil also. To see the culture and world of Brazil blended with rice farming is such a treat for me, being from Louisiana. I love the no shoe segment and the psychedelic coloring on the truck. Great! So Brazil. We could use some of their practicality in the way we do things. They could use some of our technology. Man, thanks for the response. She's from Juiz de Fora, state of Minas Gerais, about 2 hours inland from Rio. We live in my native home of S. Louisiana with our three children. I know you'll enjoy our culture here in Louisiana, including boiled crawfish (a commodity that goes hand in hand with rice production) which will be at the season's height about the time you visit. Man, give me a holler if you have time to spare, my wife and I would love to you show you around and treat you and your family to some of our Cajun cuisine. Hey CM, great question! Last year I visited a farmer and did an episode that was more of an overview of how rice is farmed in Brazil. That farmer said that they yield, on average, 56 cwts an acre on the first harvest. I didn't ask about the second harvest though. Wow! Their moisture content must be crazy, can the drying process affect the rice product if it's too wet? Were they going through a unseasonably rainy period that it had rained so much? Also.,,,, some jerkasaures swiped my rice farming magnet off of my truck, let me know if you have anymore in stock that I can purchase one.

Harvey, sorry to hear about the magnet! I do have plenty in stock. Purchase one and I'll send you two. Just so you always have a back up! Regarding the episode: Joinville frequently rains throughout the summer (their growing season), so it's a normal battle when harvesting. Even though the plant was green the rice kernels were definitely hard and ripe. They were so dry, they fell right off the plant. But if the rice kernel has a high moisture then it just translates to a higher bill from the dryer (after they dry it down to storage moisture). That's a great question! Thanks. -M.

I have some questions: Are they losing all the grains of rice for the second cutting because they continue to harvest year round and it just saves them time from replanting? Also, if they don't, then is that the nature of the beast because of the equipment they use? How much do you lose when you harvest, is it the same? I found your channel because I subscribe to Juan Browne and your video on the drought was a suggestion. Really enjoy the education process you're doing to help people understand how rice is harvested. I love long grains, especially Basmati.

Great video! I'm jealous of Brasil with that rain at the end. Being in CA with the droughts and lack of rain makes me wonder what impact that has on the rice production. I understand that there is irrigation infrastructure dedicated to rice farmers, but is that in any jeopardy?

Thank you Tim! You bring up a great point about rain. Their problem is too much rain during harvest and our problem is not enough rain during the winter, rainy season. I can't remember the exact number but we have only hit 1/3 of our average rainfall for this part of the year (with sunny skies in February). So we are definitely looking like a drought situation year this year. It's still too early to be calling it that. A few years we have been saved by a super rainy March (Miracle March). On top of the lack of rain fall we have Lake Oroville at a low level because of the work they have been doing on the dam and fear of a rainy winter. Lake Oroville is what provides our fields in our county with surface water. So yes, we have the infrastructure but there's little water within it. Our county may see cut backs. But again, it's too early to tell. The official announcement/decision will be around April 1st. But in the mean time we need to work and prepare as if we're planting 100% of our rice fields. Tough situation for all. Great question. Thank you Tim! -M.

Another Great episode! Such wonderful freindley people. Interesting to see a monsoon crop grown in it's native climate as opposed to our meditranion climate in northern California. Curious how their tons per acre annually compare when counting the second crop. Don't know if long grain vs short grain yeald difference would affect that number. Tallesta, great question! I didn't ask the difference in yield. Last year I visited a different farmer and he said his first harvest yields 56 cwts per acre on average. I'd imagine the second crop would be considerably less. Hi Ahmed this region have really good land and is really close from big cities (500.000+ population), so the price is really expensive even with the brazilian currency so undervalued it's almost US$15.000 per hectare. In the north and northeast is way cheaper from US$400 to US$3000.

Hi Matt,,, This is the best video so far, It's great to see how you just meet these guy's and they welcome you like a brother... I'm laughing when you ask him about his shoes,,,, here our local guys also never wear shoes, I guess that is because we are positioned in Asia...LOL.. Interesting to see how they do a second crop from the origional crop, we also do that here sometimes depending on the weather conditions if we get late rains and depending on dropped seed count on the ground... I see they just use the tractor with steel cage wheels to incorporate the seed back into the ground... Here we use a 6 meter power harrow with a modified rear rotator roller. I guess at the end of the day it all works... Have a great day mate... Troy.

Hey Jim, good to hear from you. A second crop just wouldn't grow/thrive during our cool, wet winters. At night time we will drop below zero several nights during the winter. Just won't grow. So we just use the time to decompose the straw and plant matter...and just take a bit of a break (after cleaning, repairing and putting away the harvest equipment). -M.

the atmosphere in brazil is the same as in my place, malaysia. I look at the rice fields in Brazil or the U.S. there are no rodents and snails that eat the rice seedlings. I am amazed to see the vastness of the U.S. and Brazilian rice fields.
