You can reduce the cooking time by soaking the rice for 1 night. On the next day it will be very very easy to cook it in both pressure cooker or normal pots in a short time (10-15 min. in a pressure cooker, about 20-30 min. in a normal pot).

You can use the rice pulp to make a delicious rice pudding, just add some coconut milk and maple syrup 🙂 Thanks for the recipe! 👍

This recipe was very handy. Thank-you. It was a little bland for my liking so, in the whizzing process I add three pitted dates for sweetness, 1/2 cup of cashew nuts, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract and a large pinch of salt. Delicious!

I use a pressure cooker. Once you bring it up to the pressure point, it only takes 20 minutes. One and a quarter cup of water for every cup of brown rice.

Make sure to cook with a thick pot. Thin aluminum or ceramic pots will cause the rice to burn. If you don't have access to a stainless steel or cast iron pot, make sure to stir occasionally to prevent the rice from burning at the bottom.

2 cents. To the questions about energy use: not a lot of energy if you are cooking very low, but Pre-cook and long cool soak should have similar results. Like when you let burned rice soak to wash, but cleaner. Main thing is to let cook for at least 20 min and mind the ratios.

I made this milk yesterday and it is quite nice better than the oat milk I made the other day which tasted raw which it is. Cooking the rice first makes it taste better. It has a thicker texture than bought milk, but then this is only rice and water. Have you really noticed what is included in bought milks! lots of added extras, plus oil and salt. This method by far cheaper than $1.80 - $3 for a litre from the shop.

Hello everyone.. I almost followed the recipe, just that I cookeed the rice with only 4 cups of wather for almost 2hrs in slow cooker (on high).. I thought the milk would be more liquid, but is actually pretty creamie, and btw, I added cinnamon to make it more flavored.. looks and taste great.. thanks for the idea

It was so close to Rice Dream, that I will never buy rice milk again!! I have been looking for a rice milk recipe for years. I did one extra step that made the difference for me. (So it wasn’t gummy or thick) After simmering the rice for 3 hours I rinsed it in cold water thoroughly. I made only 1/2 a batch and after straining it about 3 times in a very fine strainer, I added a pinch of sea salt and 2 packets of NU Stevia. My batch made 6 cups. Stir before serving each time! AMAZINGLY GOOD!!

I find it a bit 'slimy' for my liking - I tried even adding just a little to my regular milk in cereal last night. Was totally edible, not gross in any way, but not the greatest. I think it will be best to use in smoothies.

Seems like having to cook the rice for 3 hours would require a lot of electricity. Would cooking the rice in an Instant Pot pressure cooker do the job of making it soft and creamy enough?

i did exactly as you said and my rice actually did overcook. Put it on at 1, had to go out real quick and when i returned at 4 my whole house was filled with a burnt smell. I thought something may have caught on fire with the low fire i left on for the rice, but there was a layer of burnt rice at the bottom of my pot. It's a shame i have to throw out this rice, all of it smells and tastes burned. Next time I'm going to put more water than you suggested.

leave the rice to soak overnight and you dont need to cook it for 3 hours. To cook brown rice to eat, if you soak it before then you can cook it like normal rice. so to make milk maybe one hour will be fine...

I'm going to do this for sure. This is wonderful!! And I love the carob powder idea, when I was growing up, we used to drink Soyagen. It's a soy milk they don't make anymore, it was powdered and they have a carob flavored one. I loved drinking that, maybe I can re create it with the rice milk.

Hi, I did this YESTERDAY, I had to add water after two and a half hours. The water cooked out, and I had to add more (it DIDN'T burn) but it FINALLY came out (I mean it worked) I ended up with two BIG bottles & two small jars), but I decided I'll continue to buy it from the store. (the clean up is a bit much, LOL), MAYBE I'll try it again someday

Thanks for video Heather. Instead of boiling the rice for 3 hours, you can also soak the rice in water over night, then use your hands to break up the rice. Ths should save plenty of cooking time.

@healthyvegan I will definitely do this. I am sure I can even just add some more water to my jar and mix it in. I just created some great "hummus" for dipping my carrots in with the rice bran that I saved from making the milk! It was so good and the texture was near exact that of regular hummus! So much you can do in the kitchen when you get going with ideas!!

I like this video as it shows you have done all the experimenting and refining so we don't have to so we can avoid all the pitfalls. I'll probably add some brown sugar and cinnamon if I ever make this. 3 hours seems like a lot of power though so i'd probably soak and use a pressure cooker.

I can do this in my instant pot in twenty minutes or less. I would probably do this entire recipe for 30 minutes in the IP with a natural release. And I guarantee you it will be soft. Most brown rice cooks in around 22 minutes. So the extra eight minutes will make it nice and soft. Cheers. Now it's time to invest in an IP or pressure cooker.

I'm thinking of becoming vegan... because I've had weight problems for a big portion of my life and have been dieting since I was 14 (I'm 18). I know that vegan diets are really healthy and if I commit to it (which I'm pretty good at - commitment, I mean) then I'd lose weight in the process and I could stop having to go on dumb diets. Any comments before I make the decision? I want to make sure I'm not doing the wrong thing

Do you know the nutritional values for this recipe?? I am sooo excited to try this!! All the alternative "milk" recipes I have found are nut milks, but I don't want all the fat that they create, so this will be perfect!! Will the cooking time still be the same if I make half the recipe (1/2 cup rice & 4 cups water for cooking)?

@blinkme478 Soy was likely the problem...it can have "unpleasant" results for a large amount of people. I cannot handle lactose so I switched to soy. Big mistake. It was just as "unpleasant" and after doing research I found that most people who can't handle dairy can't handle soy either. It also affects people who have no issues with dairy. I drink an organic and gluten free rice milk and have yet to experience any issues.
