I think a big part of why the neofetch source code is so long is because of the ascii arts. I counted and averaged each ascii art to be about 20 lines. Neofetch has ascii art for 191 distros. This is equal to an estimated *3820* lines.
@KSPAtlas3 жыл бұрын
@Mr. Rich B.O.B that would break interoperability. Say an arch user uploaded neofetch to the AUR. A Manjaro user downloads it and when they run it, they get the wrong distro.

the thing is that neofetch is not meant to be launched every time you open a shell session. If you just want bling for you shell, the best thing is to get from neofetch only the scripting parts that will get the data for you and the logo of your distro.

Hi I am Anhsirk0 (Author of fm6000) Thanks ! I was surprised to see it here The extra quote issue is fixed (via PR , thanks to mtwb47) I added the GPL-3 Licence Its just a small script , not mean to be replace any kind of fetch thats out there. A lot of people are scared of Perl. I think Perl is underrated/unpopular. I like Perl , it kinda feels like bash with wings. It goes good with shell and already available in every(mostly) Linux/Unix Distros Languages are just tools. I like the Dilbert TV Show and Kakoune text editor (which has a Dilbert assistant), So I got the Idea from there (also the ASCII art) Showing system info is just to show something along with it. Thanks for checking it out . means a lot

@Chr0n0s383 жыл бұрын
@Ichigo Kurosaki Well the language maintainers let their domain registration run out, so the site got taken over by hackers. That definitely doesn't help their cause. That issue aside, Perl is just not a pleasant language to work in. There are much cleaner languages that accomplish the same tasks, such as Python.
@bogamol3 жыл бұрын
I just need someone to port asciiquarium to Rust and I will be 100% on board with no perl. 🙏
@neverbetter54343 жыл бұрын
@Ichigo Kurosaki Sorry it took me so long to reply. I am certainly not trying to disparage anyone's preference. The release of Perl 6 after years and years of waiting along with a pretty big culture change in sysadmins really impacted it's use. Perl was a strong choice for Linux admins before Y2k. The delay of Perl 6 really triggered an exodus to other options while hurting the trust users had in the maintainer. (So bad Perl 6 got rebranded as Raku). I know that some engineers are fond of it but, I personally dont want to look back at a language that has limited use cases.

Fetchmaster 6000 is a reference to the old Dilbert cartoon from 2000 or so. For several episodes they were tasked with building an exercise machine called the Gruntmaster 6000.

Although I have neofetch installed for screenshot/video purposes to provide quick info, I never execute it and couldn’t care less for this non-sense. I customize my prompt and my terminal emulator’s colors. That’s it. ASCII art in the terminal is just wasted space (I would clean screen every time anyways)

Hey DT, why do you use GitLab instead of GitHub? Would you recommend it for a learning developer like me?
@AbhinavKulshreshtha3 жыл бұрын
Mostly because Gitlab is fully open source while github never was. Github is now owned by Microsoft so in order to stay in good terms with govt, they are blindly implementing DMCA, like they did with youtube-dl and popcorn time. Gitlab does have dmca but they don't takedown your repos without having discussion first. I don't have any example of repo takedown on gitlab but if I remember their policy correctly, even if repo is marked for closure, owner is allowed to download repo so that they can look for alternative hosting. When github closed yt-dl weeks of work was lost because they didn't have all the branches on them. Most forks were few days old.
@AbhinavKulshreshtha3 жыл бұрын
@AstroCat Yes, Committed to github. Then next morning, they found that repo has been closed, without warning, chance to explain yourself. Remember this is a large project with many maintainers and contributes and lots of branches. So every maintainers were stuck with whatever branch on whatever forked date they were on their local system. Most of time in such large scale project, maintainers Coordinate with community via github issues, manage project via github's inbuilt kanban board, Imagine the loss if the repo had not been restored. There is a blog by on of the maintainer, where he talked about these issues. Yes some people forked it into yt-dlc and other stuff, but how to get in touch with everyone and tell them to move their work there. And the loss of brand value all because of there were 2 links in comments, in an old test file, pointing to some songs.
