The dynamic between Nigel and Evelyn would make a great k-drama plot. He is the very successful, intelligent and cute but emotionless CEO. She is the long-suffering, smart and broken but beautiful friend/colleague/assistant If the k-drama has 24 episodes, the final episodes might look something like this: Episode 20: Nigel and Evelyn celebrate some or other podcast milestone by drinking too much and end up dancing & singing karaoke at a club Episode 21: Nigel and Evelyn declare their feelings to each other with passionate kisses Episode 22: Nigel's ex-wife enters the scene admitting that their divorce was a mistake and wanting him back. Episode 23: Nigel & Evelyn question whether they should risk their friendship for a romantic relationship. The final episode is a beautiful wedding with all the trimmings!!

As a Malaysian Chinese in HK, I can attest that Everlyn sounds like Swedish Banana with her Canto and Mando while Nigel is hiding the fact that his mando and canto are great; you cant have crappy Chinese if you attended a top Chinese high school in KL @.@ Love your podcast! Nigel, I don't know why; it seems like Malaysian loves to joke crassly; Everlyn, would you agree with me? :D

You have to be precise with the intonation and pronunciation of every word when speaking in Chinese. So, yes, i totally relate to Nigel’s comments on Evelyn’s cantonese and mandarin. There is a distinct natural tone to those who speak decent Chinese which is quite difficult to adapt if you haven’t been speaking it since childhood or if you’re learning it as a foreign language.

I have to say that I love that you release your podcast on Tuesdays, the worst day of the week. But now I start looking forward to Tuesdays because I know there will be a new ricetomeetyou episode! Also I agree with Nigel, listening to Ashley Park's mediocre Chinese in Emily In Paris, when the character is supposedly from Shanghai, really put me off. Like they couldn't find a Chinese actress for that role? Or even change the background of that character to Korean instead of Chinese?

Nigel is really harsh, he's judging you from the yardstick of him growing up in Malaysia and you growing up in Sweden. I also feel his perfectionism is a defense mechanism because he's hard on himself. It's okay to not be "the best" at everything. Evelyn, don't lose confidence!

To be honest, being an Asian raised in Asia, Nigel's advice is really helpful and, tbh, we all Asians would already have that in mind before walking into it but still, it's really nice to hear that from another person. It's practical. He's not trying to give you unicorn shits. edit: and also, Cantonese people tend to be p-r-e-t-t-y critical about cantonese cuz obviously cantonese is harder because of the tone. NOT saying that cantonese speaking ppl are better cuz we all know they (most of them) suck at speaking mandarin but still.

@phatLeptosom3 жыл бұрын
@48:40 exactly! spot-on description of victim blaming, universal to diversities. of course you cant blame nigel, since his 2 semesters of philosophy back in his bachelor studies merely gave him an idea for a nouveau riche (more accurate: pettit bourgeois) type of wall decoration that was popular amongst undereducated asian immigrants 10 years ago (nowadays artsy shit would have been, for my knowledge). So hes still a humanities illiterate that would appear outdated even among the functional elites of his own homeland.^^ But what else instead of 'holding space' (wtf came up with this cheapo concept anyway?!) should be the consequence out of a perfectly accurate description? - In any case not generalizing as if its just a genreal, societal problem that gets, again, naturalized as a function of an anonymous swarm intelligence beyond any possibility of influence! It has to be taken PERSONAL. Cuz the goal of this defense mechanism - mostly unconscious - is to SHUT DOWN talk about individual vulnerabilites categorically to avoid contradictions in a safe and sound system of attributions. Nah, bruh! Big chicks and whoever is non-identical just have to talk it out about themselves (as long as its not some meaningless self-celebratory bs of course).

In regards to catfishing: I'm mixed white/Japanese and I have a Singaporean friend and we both are fine with plus size women (not chasers tho), but for him living in SG, he used to struggle with the way society judges you for dating bigger girls. I think Evelyn's right saying the issue is society, but I think it extends to men as well. Effectively conditioning us to want skinny girls, and if that doesn't work, it shames us for finding + size attractive or dating + size women to stop us doing it. He claims he felt less of that living in Australia, and I don't feel it's that big an issue living in Aus/UK. So perhaps some of these guys are realizing that they won't be shamed as much in a western society compared to an Asian society?
