From what I have read the term left over women goes way further back then the 2000s It actually goes way further back in Chinese history. If it's cultural then you have to consider for something like that to be cultural it has to go back generations so the idea and term of leftover women goes back generations in China it's just something new to us as Western people. Just like with in other Asian cultures there is the idea of leftover women even though it's termed differently but this is pervasive in many Asian cultures and I think that's partly due to some of the influence of Chinese culture because there is influence of Chinese culture in other Asian cultures.

My mother was from a 3rd world country, she lived in poverty and was 28 before she married my father who was 10 years older than her. She never loved him, was not attracted to him and at times thought she was better off as a single mother of several children. After all of her children moved out she moved back to her country to be with her family for almost a year before coming back to live with my father until he passed. They were married for over 50 years. As much as she didn't like him, she wished he was still with her because life was easier. The western world had a similar one in post WW2 when women were suddenly valued in the workforce and then refused to return to gender roles from previous generations. Society won't go backwards. It's about adapting to where society is now. When women have the majority of skills in certain fields then there is going to be a societal shift. How society shifts is dependent on how critical those skills are. If you are talking about preschool workers, but men are the majority of power traction engineers and linesmen, then society doesn't shift much, if at all. A qualification has only the value that the skillset is needed by society. That's why some degrees see you on the unemployment queue and some certificate/diploma level qualifications see you with the ability to negotiate a $250k plus salary as a qualified adult wage.
