What kills me is the whole High school fishing. Some kids want to fish but can’t because their parents can’t afford a boat. This is especially bad for the child and it’s not good for the parents either they both feel less than. Then you have some kids that have $120,000 bass boats and you have other kids and little bitty. John boats with a trolling motor in a battery and a makeshift Livewell. It’s really sad. I’m glad this is my last year of having to be my son’s captain. The High School fishing needs to be completely revamped.

Randy, in 2022 you posted a video entitled, "Pro Bass Fishing Is Not A Real Professional Sport". Please don't compare it to baseball, football, golf, tennis, etc. It's not the same. Arguably, it really doesn't fit the definition of a "sport", which requires physical activity and a specific skill. Fishing is mostly a passive activity (unless you're rowing a canoe or kayak) and the current advanced electronics, per your constant reminder, have removed the skill element from fishing. We fish "for sport", which means it is an activity we do for amusement or fun. It doesn't mean the activity is a "sport".

2:30 Randy what you’re talking about in fishing sadly has become universal. As it pertains to baseball and basketball, if a kid wants to really try to succeed his/her parents are likely shelling +$5000 a year or more for private training and select leagues. A relative of mine is going through this experience with track and field.. which like you said used to be a sport where all you needed was a decent pair of shoes, talent, and the desire to compete.. it’s a shame that every aspect of our lives is now commodified so that someone can capitalize on it.. because like you know well with fishing.. virtually every athlete that made it from humble beginnings to riches looks at the modern landscape of sports competition with disgust.. because their avenue for success does not exist in 2025.

I've long said that there needs to be a cap on the total retail cost of your boat and accessories. Personally, I don't care what rods and bait you have access to, what electronics you have, what trolling motor you run, or anything else for that matter. What bothers me is that (until recently in my life) is that I could compete with the best on smaller lakes with only running a 15' tri-hull with a 70hp on the back. Yet, you put me on a larger lake, I couldn't compete because my little 15-footer won't safely run that body of water. I feel that the cap should be monetary, not just limiting equipment, because it can benefit everyone. For instance; let's say you have a $70,000 retail price cap on the boat and electronics. One could run a 21-footer with a 250 and an Ultrex, but you would have to limit your electronics at that point. If you want to run $8,000-$12,000 in electronics, twin power poles, and a top end trolling motor with lithium batteries, you will have to compromise on the cost of your boat by downsizing. Your decision will have to be part of your strategy for the year. Maybe you choose to run an 18-footer with a 150 so you can have all the electronics you desire. Maybe it's to run a 21-footer with a 250 with minimal electronics because you want to just cover as much water as possible. Or, maybe you want to run a more balanced boat where you can do a little of everything, but not really optimized for anything particular. Sure, $70k is a lot of money, but, in the end, a guy with a 15 year old boat could then be able to somewhat hold their own and showcase their talent. If implemented, this would allow for one to be able to focus their funds on their strengths, leveling the playing field a lot more. Also, if the companies want to show off their products on the professional stage, they would be forced to lower the MSRP of their products so that they can fall within the criteria.

All the equipment companies are sponsoring the BASS, MLF.... when they are getting 25% of their funding from all the electronics companies they are not going to restrict these companies components, who is really calling the shots and dictating the rules. Great comments on young anglers coming up, I know several young people like you are getting emails from that can't compete. Most of these kids end up playing soccer or football due to the "cost vs talent", you might be the most talented angler at a young age but cannot cover cost, pro fishing is not for you, this makes me sad to think how many kids are turned off to professional fishing because of this. All other sports is "Talent vs Cost" these are factors to consider as a young person, but pro fishing has it backwards and COST is before TALENT, in fact because of electronics now, this is the only sport if you can cover the cost talent is not part of the equation any longer.

It’s NOT up to the tournaments to level a playing field. This video shows exactly why Bass fisherman need to have other avenues of income other than tournament winnings. Putting one social class against another and crying about one angler having a better or more expensive boat than little Johnnie over here is not fixing any perceived injustice. If you want better equipment, then go out and get a higher paying job, or get a 2nd job. Income inequality is in every sport. My son played on travel baseball teams with kids who were not as good as he was, but yet the other kids parents spent more money on his bat, which enabled him to hit the ball further than he otherwise would. I told my son if he wanted that bat, he needed to save his money. And you know what…..HE DID. Instead of teaching our kids to play “keep up with the Jones”, maybe we should teach them how to go out and work hard at something they like to do…..like Bass fishing, and earn what they have. If another angler’s parents are well off enough to buy their son a $100,000 boat, that great. Stop worrying about what other people have and start focusing on what you need to do to get better so you too can one day get that fancy boat. Envy is one of the 7 deadly sins. Let’s not teach that to the next generation.

There is a big difference in money now compared to back then. A winner on the Elites makes $100k now. 75% of Americans don't make $100k a year, much less in a week. Back in the late 60s, a tournament win was maybe $3k. A $7K annual income back then was 50% at best for most Americans. The standard of living now is light years ahead of back then. Randy, I believe that you are a little out of touch. Income unfortunately effects ALL sports. You site golf, baseball, football as not favoring those with more money. Those with disposable income spend tons of cash on specialized training that starts at age 6, club and travel leagues where parents spend thousands to be on the road every weekend, in golf many wealthy belong to private courses where play and practice facilities are unlimited use, etc. etc. etc. This is in NO way exclusive to fishing! The one thing that is not mentioned is that the drive and determination in those that come from humble upbringings is often deeper and stronger than those from a wealthy upbringing. Not always, but often. THIS IS NOT DISCRIMINATION! It may be easier with money, but no one is saying that you can not participate unless you are well off.

I’m no professional angler, but tournament bass fishing is where I choose to spend my money. I have a nice boat and nice equipment…..Lots of Megabass stuff……I cashed 1 check in the 2024 tournament season. 1. Tell those kids that call you to stay in school and get an education. Get 2 jobs to pay their way if needed. When they are financially stable with a career, they can buy a boat and Megabass lures and compete in large tournaments on a regional level. The path to financial security and happiness and the ability to pay your way is a long hard road. For some it is harder than others. That’s just how it is.

Spending over $100 at a Bucky's for jerky, etc. Staying at a house for a tournament nicer than half of us li8ve in. He is obviously a multi millionaire from family. Dad was a good provider.

Kyak tournaments fix all this.

I had a so-called professional bass fisherman respond to my comment on your last video and he said he made 500,000 last year fishing tournaments and was glad he was able to get food stamps for his family because he was considered unemployed just fishing tournaments

@winstonrocco1981 as a worker man that's proud to make a living at kind of left me shocked. What do you expect from pieces of s*** these days

He’s full of horse manure. In today’s bass tournament world, there aren’t more than 2 or 3 making that kind of money.

It's just as easy for him to say he made a million dollars as it is 500k.

Did I miss it and somehow life all of a sudden became fair? Where there's a will there's a way, others are just Democrats ... lol 👽🦖🦖

just take McKinneys. the parents own a very successful business in Illinois. sure they do good own their own with FFS, but wealthy parents that bankroll you, so you aren't fishing for a check, makes all the difference. But byron Velvick found a wife, now ex, that gave him the opportunity!

You keep complaining about tournament organizers how about starting your own then you can make your own rules.
@gingerninja36232 сағат бұрын
You’re comparing apples and oranges. The difference in fishing and actual sports is that there is no piece of equipment that can (by itself) make a non-athlete, athletic enough to compete at a high level. For example, give a kid who sucks at a certain sport steroids, and they will still suck; they will just be stronger while still sucking. Tbh, after watching several of your videos, you just come off as bitter and jealous. Who cares where others get their money or how they spend it. The technology is here. Either use it or don’t. Worry about what you can control and enjoy fishing how you like to fish…

It's not just fishing. The richest guy in the world just bought our government. Heck as far as fishing goes, a danged fish hook costs a dollar!
@C_H_U_14 сағат бұрын
Randy why do you keep limiting options to cater to you? You can’t have it all bud. Go make your own tournament and rules and leave this to us.

If you cant see where this guy is coming from you must be blind
@C_H_U_12 сағат бұрын
@ I must be. I see the bigger picture. Ban bass fishing tournaments in general and go back to spear and actual branch rods with preferred bait being insects and earth worm. This way it’ll protect the whole fishery instead of blaming one thing because you don’t like it.
@bri525mag10 сағат бұрын
@ is that right. Well you crack on brother and make the most of it.
@C_H_U_10 сағат бұрын
@@bri525mag So do you agree that we should ban tournament fishing? You realize you take one thing away and there’s literally 1000 more problems that exist or existed prior. You can’t have it all bud. If you ban tournament fishing you literally illuminate Rich dudes taking over tournament fishing and rich dudes selling you lead for $10. Pick your poison kid.

Money typically makes things easier in life. Its just the way it is. I do think it has gotten way out of hand. I certainly cant afford all this new technology and new boats.
