It was never about total time, it's always, ALWAYS been about pace. Action. I love love love the changes made. And we still see some 3 hour games but we don't mind because they're 11-7 slugfests with 12 total pitchers used. Those games used to take 4-1/2 hours. It just goes faster because of pace. Brilliant!!!

I LOVE the pitch clock. There is no Earthly reason why a regular season baseball game has to go into 5 hours and change. ESPECIALLY when you can break the game down to 'hits and catches' highlights and be done with the whole thing in 2 minutes. It's about time MLB finally told the players to put down the pine tar and rosin bags, stop eff'ing with your hat or gloves, knock off the 25 practice swings and fake throws to first, and play the damned game.

I'm old school also & am only a couple of years younger than Rich. Here's the thing if anyone is truly old school baseball then these new rules actually make baseball old school again. Baseball is my favorite sport & the first sport that I began to follow. When I was 5 I got to stay up and watch Reggie Jackson hit three home runs in a world series game and still get to bet at a decent time. Having more balls in play will lead to things like moving runners over again and the art of bunting. These rules will also lead to more stolen bases & hopefully have guys like Rickey Henderson & Vince Coleman who I grew up watching stealing 50 to 100 plus bases a year. This is old school baseball.

Only change I would suggest would be to remove the pitch clock in the 9th inning. We have auto instant reply in the NFL under 2 MINS. For those of you baseball traditionalists that are against the pitch clock, I would like to remind you that the pitch clock has changed the game so it’s played at the same pace. It was in the 1950s and 1960s. When baseball was a much better game to watch then it came to be prior to this year.

@dougsholly9323

The bottom line is that they are adding time constraints to a game that was never designed to have them. Maybe the games are longer today because players are fidgeting around more, and why that is could be up for debate. But the cure is not to force them to play faster by giving them a time limit. Not only does that change the entire dynamic of the game, essentially fundamentally changing the game, but you also get players figuring out how to abuse the new rules to their advantage further morphing baseball. If making games end faster is your goal, congratulations, you win. I prefer to watch baseball played the way it's been played for the last 150 years instead of the mess I see now. Consider this, the purpose of these rules to hasten the game is to attract more viewers. The problem is that in order for that to be a success, not only does the rule have to attract a new viewer, but they also have to attract a second new viewer to replace me, because I find most of the new rules to be offensive.
@giantsfan185

So then leave and don't come back. Because if you think the way baseball has been played over the past two decades is the exact way its been played for 150 years you're nuts. I think some adjustments around the edges can be done to help ensure a smooth 9th inning. For example, not penalizing runners for walking back to bases following foul balls. A review of the clock starting at 15 secs versus, say, 18 secs. And perhaps liberalizing the timing (does it need to be 8 secs?) and qualifications (is eye contact necessary?) for the batter to be considered pitch-ready. I'm sure MLB will review the data; just a question of when it does and who it involves to determine if any adjustments are warranted.

They should make it 25 seconds, I think 15 is too short plus you could have more injuries having the pitcher constantly have to keep moving and moving like that

Baseball is falling off because its not fun to watch. It's not exciting. They are trying to make more points scored by hurrying the pitchers essentially making it more exciting but its still baseball the only thing they did was make the games not an entire day event. Lol

Now if they could just limit the number of relief pitchers used per game I'm sure that would help as well....What happened to the good old fashioned starting pitchers who finished what he started?

They starting paying them 30 to 40 million, that's what happened. Doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure that out. Teams arent gonna ride that kind if investment into the ground.

MLB did already limit relief pitching recently. The relief pitcher has to face a certain minimum number of batters now.

Pace isn't speed, it's the appearance of speed. No one in favor of this pitch clock crap wanted a game "more exciting" than the true three outcomes. They wanted a game over a half-hour earlier just for the sake of it being short, simply because they don't actually have 5 minutes of patience for the sport of baseball let alone 30. Real fans don't care how long the game takes. They actually want to be at the ballpark. Congratulations, posers, you got your way. If you're reading this, you likely missed the game. Blink and it's over.

Here is a crazy realization… US sports are the only sports that have time outs. Y’all’s sports last forever. You gotta build in time for y’all’s lazy asses to get your third portion of nachos. Rugby. 40mins a half, done and dusted. Soccer. 45 mins a half, stoppage time, done and dusted.

Unfortunately these younger fans have the attention spans of gnats so the game now has to be rushed. What's sad is these idiots think the game will take less time, yet theres still gonna be 3 to 5 minute commercial breaks in between every half inning. Rob Manfred has finally destroyed the game.
