I will go so far as to say baseball as we know it wouldn't exist today if it wasn't for ROIDS. After the 94-95 strike caused them to cancel the season... people were not coming back in droves to watch baseball, because they didn't care anymore. Football was beginning it's ascendancy towards being the top sport in the US. If it wasn't for McGuire and Sosa going after Maris' record, a lot of casual baseball fans would not have even cared about baseball. The homerun chase only brought people's eyes to the game again. Where would baseball be today, if not for that homerun chase?

It's been estimated that up to 80% of the league was taking amphetamines by the 60s and 70s. Mays, Mantle, Stargell, just to name a few, have been implicated by multiple players over the years of not just taking them, but for throwing them around like candy. Gaylord Perry openly talked about how he was cheating, wrote a book about how he was cheating WHILE STILL PLAYING, and got caught cheating in a game, still just waltzed right in to the Hall. Tim Raines is in the Hall despite being named in the 85 drug trials and admitting to cocaine during games. The Hall of Fame of fame is filled with cheaters. Just can't have these ones getting in there, they might ruin its reputation or something.

Babe Ruth? Notoriously slept with prostitutes, which ended his first marriage, contacted syphilis from it. Gaylord Perry and Whitey Ford? They, among many other pitchers, doctored the ball every start. What about the 75% of players in the 1970s that used amphetamines ("greenies"), including most of the HOF inductees from that time? Or how about Pud Galvin, who at 32 felt he needed more has in the tank, so he drank GROUND UP MONKEY TESTICLES to try and get more testosterone...in 1889.

Ortiz knows without the PED's he would have been a 250- 260 average hitter with 25 to 30 homerun guy. A good player but no way a HOF level player. He also knows, Clemens and Bonds were better overall players than he was.

I remember being a little kid at a Padre Pirates game and a skinny Barry Bonds was stealing bases robbing homeruns hitting home runs talking crap to the fans . He was very arrogant and a great baseball player. You could tell he was a hall of famer by the way he walk. He was that good and constantly beat my Padres with homeruns before the steroid era. He was a skinny athletic fast powerful 5 tool player from 86 to 94 best in the game. From a Padre fan Barry is a clear cut Hall of Famer.

Baseball is quickly becoming irrelevant to the younger generations. At the same time, the old establishment is bring stubborn and stuck in their own ways. Why not highlight and market the careers of Bonds, Mcguire and Clemens and introduce them to the kids? Let's not pretend that they would be shocked by steroid use or haven't been exposed to these topics already.

Uh oh. Did my man Rich Eisen use this word "suspected," intentionally? Applies ZERO percent to Roger Clemens. Covering the sport '96 to '03 isn't carte blanche to absolve these players. It's not like you're Tim Kurkjian in that respect. I like you a lot, Rich, but you give yourself a smidge too much credit. But then again, if their Commissioner is in, all bets are off. Enshrine every player he turned a blind eye to.

No interest in seeing Bonds in; he made a mockery of the sport. The HOF is a sham anyway - no Pete Rose and no Roger Maris? It’s not a Hall of Fame. Maris still holds the legitimate home run record season, 60 years later.
