Met him with my little sister at a charity event. When he found out she had just started playing basketball he asked her a dozen questions about her middle school basketball game and gave an impassioned little personal speech about how important and meaningful the game was and how much it could teach her about life. We were literally nobody, there was no reason for him to talk to us (I was just there to take people's coats and my sister was waiting for my mom to pick her up), and he treated us like the most important people there. A terrifically kind man. Treasure the experience still.

Bill Walton was one of a kind. From his hippy-dippy Grateful Dead stuff to on the court. I'm 67 and I will miss him. And, I'm a diehard Lakers fan, Bill Walton was one of the very few that gave Kareem fits. I hope that wherever you are you and Jerry Garcia are laughing and smoking some spliffs. This news has taken the wind out of my sails for a while. So long Bill, save me a room at the Mars Hotel.

This one hits. I didn’t know he had cancer. Loved Bill Walton. My husband I, while traveling last, week. Talking nostalgic things. I told him I never sent a fan letter. Only sent one condolence to a tv personality. Tim Russert. 💙. I told my husband that I was going to sit down Monday morning and compose and email to Bill Walton and find how to send it. We talked about him for half an hour. Such a joy. I did begin the email on Sunday night. To just tell him how much we loved to watch him play and how much we just thought he was a fine and decent human being and we’re glad you are on the planet WITH us. Monday afternoon, my birthday, we were eating in downtown okc. Bricktown. Every tel vision immediately was turned up. Most of the crowd stopped talking, and we just stared. I had my hand over my heart and cried. Didn’t expect that reaction but he was wonderful.

when we were in High School I remember Bill getting out of his Karmen Ghia so he was used to squeezing into small cars. He also sat at concerts with his feet up on the stage so he could stretch out. He was truly a big man and probably really over 7 foot if you see him standing next to his contemporaries. And always remember, his college records were done without a dunk due to the Alcindor rule forbidding dunks and he played against many of the greatest centers of all time.

At the beginning of the school year in ‘74, I was a senior at Willamette U in Salem, OR. The Blazers were using our brand new gym as a practice facility. I happened to run into Bill standing outside enjoying the sunshine (it doesn’t always rain in the PNW). He starts talking to me like he’s just a regular guy about his experience at UCLA, joking about how there might be classes on his transcript that he didn’t take, and of course, asked me about what I was studying and commented on what a beautiful campus we had. I wished him luck with the Blazers and told him we fans were thrilled to have him in Portland. He was larger than life already at such a young age… RIP, Bill

I talked to Bill dozens of times at Dead shows. I attended over 300 shows (71-95) and just because of familiarity I got to know Bill. He was a wonderful person. I only saw him a few times since Jerry Garcia died but he always remembered me even though years would go by. Just a warm person and we shared a love of music. We never talked about basketball.😊

One of the Greatest NCAA Final Performances you’ll ever see as he officially hit 21 of 22 shots Against Memphis State in 1973. I believe they took a few baskets away because of the No Dunk rule at the time or he would have been 25 of 26. People forget He also led The Portland Trail Blazers to their only NBA Title in 1977 also winning the MVP. Three time College Basketball Player of the year. Two time Final Four MVP. NBA MVP 1978. Two NCAA Titles, Three Final Four appearances. 86-4 Record at UCLA. 6th Man of the year award in 1986 and also a second NBA Title as a Member of the Boston Celtics. He would be talked about even more had his career not been slowed by injuries. RIP Bill Walton

Rich just brought tears to my eyes and a whole lot of respect! Lifelong Portland Tral Blazer fan since day one in 1970 and watched Bill as a college player and wouldn't you know, the Blazers had the first pick in the draft in 74 and picked Bill. He was injured a lot in those first couple of years but, then came the ABA dispersal and Portland got Maurice Lucas and then hired Jack Ramsey as coach and a year later, we were the Champions of the NBA!!! I saw Walton vs. Kareem twice that year, live in the Memorial Colosseum! I visited my wife in the hospital today and wore my retro 77, #32 Walton jersey there and put a smile on a lot of faces. Bill is an Oregon treasure!!!
