And if you sign Soto, you can’t get pitching help, a first baseman, a third baseman and a legit CF. Martian needs to learn to play left, so a good defensive CF is important. And, as we saw in Game 5, defense matters in baseball.

As much as I admire Rich (following from Japan), I am inclined to think that throwing out more money for superstars is not the priority remedy for the Yankees. This series leaves us a lesson that when money is being spent on both sides, the side that places the greater emphasis on the execution of fundamentals most likely emerges as the victor.

Dodgers the won the WS because of Ohtani. Ohtani’s attitude toward winning was so impactful to the team. In his daily work ethic and his contract. Because of him and only because of him, Dodgers are going to be wining for a long time. Not the same with Soto….he’s going to cripple the team he signs with because they won’t be able to afford anybody else. He’s not worth it. Liability in defense, can’t steal bases, and only popped 40 homers once in his career so far. And he doesn’t bring eyeballs to his team like Ohtani does. I can see Soto getting lazy after he signs his big contract. Not Ohtani tho, cuz Ohtani wants to win and be the best there ever was. Totally different characters. Ohtani is that dream superstar you never get in real life. Super talented, unmatched discipline and work ethic, drive to win, and team before self. He wants a winning team. He wants to play in WS every year and he wants to be the best there ever was. He’s the perfect superstar to be on your team. Soto is your typical superstar. Baseball is just a means to make money. That’s it.

Dodgers hit only .206 in the WS. That should tell you the importance of defense. The Yanks should solidify the infield, and pick up a quality starter and add bullpen arms. One move may be let Gleyber go (defensive liability), move Jazz to 2B and obtain a solid 3rd baseman

Yankees are in a tough position to win the WS next year. If Soto leaves, Yankees have no chance. But if Soto asks for Ohtani money, it’s a bad deal for a second rate outfielder but great hitter and ties their hands to fix the outfielder positioning issues that caused them to lose this year. I can’t see a way out of it other than just throwing more money and hoping to out offense everyone and just dumb hoping the Dodgers have multiple bad days. Unless the Yankees punt 2025 and rebuild this year, and focus on developing defense. And buy a big star a Soto level player later in the future.

Soon enough these Yankees people will realize the Mets have far less holes on there roster then they do and the Yankees signing Soto will absolutely stop them from doing much of anything else. Unlike the Mets who have $178mil coming off the books can sign Soto and still massively upgrade the team along with a very strong farm system to trade along with some veterans they can move like a McNeil, Marte etc. If it was up to me I’d let Pete walk sign Christian Walker to a short term deal or go all in and trade for Vlad Jr and go find a CF. I’d also entertain Cody Bellinger in all honesty for both positions. Then rebuild your SP and BP. What’s crazy is Mets can do all that and will have spent less money than they did last year.
