I am the person that still talks to those people at the skatepark who wear headphones just to compliment them on how well they are skating and that I am trying to learn more. I use to think people hated me for doing that but now when people see me they come say hello and it feels good. I feel like I made more friends at a skatepark than I have ever at school.

Coming from a small Midwest town and being lower class I feel this so hard John. We skated what we had and did what we had to do to get the job done. Puts it all in a different light now that I’m an adult with adult money and it feels so nice being able to give back to the skateboard community when I can whether it be new/used boards, trucks or whatever I still remember being that envious “poor” kid just trying to skate and feel free. That’s why at 32 I’m still skating,to feel just as good as I did at 12 when I started.

Money and priorities stopped me from skating in the 80s. But at 44 I have to say, I really enjoy being able to get a fresh board and try different setups. I do my best to pass on my lightly used boards to the people at the park putting in work. I am grateful to pay it forward and keep a few people rolling.

no i 100% understand. ALL my friends felt that way after high school, and most of them quit. really depends on the city. it's not weird to see an older skater in metropolis cities, like new york city, la. so the most influential cities in the world, have more, and older skaters, so if some one were to judge you for it, they just don't know much.

Another dynamic of skateparks that was always interesting to me was this supposed "rivalry" between young skaters and old skaters. I grew up skating in the 90s and as a kid it was beyond intimidating skating with older shredders who weren't always the most friendly. Growing up skating in San Francisco and Santa Cruz there was no shortage of great skaters but I really felt that pressure and judgement being a kid and rolling up to a park. Now that I'm 32 and still hitting the parks consistently, I don't feel it anymore personally but I am conscious to not put that energy out there either and to be as supportive as I can. It definitely seems to be much more inclusive without that hardcore local vibe these days which is great. That's still there but I don't sense it directed at kids anymore which is kind of my point; if an adult is a kook and in the way that's one thing but don't get on the kids for that. Guide them.

In Pasadena Texas during the '80s, most kids where I lived didn't have a choice; we had to take care of our boards to make them last. If you received one skateboard a year where I lived, you were considered as lucky. Marcelo and I were best friends; we would go dumpster diving, looking for old, damaged boards with ground down tails and other problems. Marcelo had advanced woodworking knowledge for someone is age; he would fix the discarded skate decks with sundried popsicle sticks (birch wood), super glue, and fiberglass. Although his father was an illegal immigrant from Mexico, his family ran a fairly successful "cash-only" landscaping business. At the time, back in 1987, my father was laid off and out of work. On the weekends Marcelo's parents would take us fishing. After a long day fishing on the beach, his mother would prepare our fish dinner. While we were waiting for dinner to be ready, Marcelo and I would fix the skateboards we found in the dumpster during the previous week. Surprisingly, he made most of the skate decks like new. Oh, how the time flies! Shout-out to Marcelo Rodriguez; I haven't seen you for 35 years but I hope you're doing well.

It's the only way how you can get rid of these annoyingly bad preconceptions about other people. T a l k. It's the only way of learning how people really are. And poor people can be total jerks just as well as rich people. The whole hating on people with money is ridiculously silly. 80 out of a 100 skaters will be down to earth, somewhat shy but ultimately cool people that share the same passion. People assume too much how rich people will be jerks, which is just dumb talk.

I can relate to this, all the stuff about growing up poor, being the 'affordable' board rider in the Esk8 space. Some people go through these £350-6000 ones like it's toilet paper, yet here I am cherishing every one I get. I stuck with a 12mph esk8 for one year, a 15mph for two years... Meanwhile, everyone else was complaining their boards ONLY did 24mph/climbed 15% hills with ease.

One of my best friends Scott Ratterman took me to the X-games his dad was rich as hell and he knew I loved skating and asked me and told me it's all covered. I was almost dirt floor poor my single mom worked three jobs I was happy as hell to go and Tony Hawk landed the 900 at the X-games it's in my top 5 happiest memories.

for soccer, an average ball is around 35, and a high end can go up to 200, and good boots are at least 200-300 usd, however you can always find boots on sale and only have to buy 1-3 pairs a season, whereas skateboarding you typically always need a new deck or wheels, so in that regards it’s way more expensive

Bro I am convinced John Hill Is one of the most consistent skaters of this generation, kid lands everything 1st or 2nd try, and literally there is not one trick he can't do, lol the one video he was saying he can't hardflip butyet did it first try, it didnt look right at all hut he did it lol, he doesn't spread his legs and let the board flip between his legs, he just does the flip and jumps backward looks like a backwards varial like no vertical motion to it at all lol, I think the steeziest hardflips arwnr to vertical but they kinda gotta be a little vertical not to hit your legs, and the one foot catch at 90 and guide it all the away around, looks so sick, cabr do it that way lol,but mine at least flip between my legs not behind me lol

I ride bmx. If you do too you’ll know exactly what I mean. Bmx is the most expensive (non-winter) sport. A beginner level bike can run your upwards of 300 bucks and a pro one is like 1500-1700 and that’s not even custom and with $200 tune ups every now and then

Bro you're my favorite skater because of how you portray that all skaters should be more open minded, accepting, and supportive of other skaters. Change the stigma, change the sport for the better!

When I first got my skateboard (wich was a cruiser) I thought I could do tricks untill my cousin told me it's not for tricks so when I got home I looked on the internet for a skateboard and after a few minutes of research I found the skateboard I want,The Globe G1 FairWeather. It took me around 2 weeks to get the money to get the skateboards like cleaning my brothers room fir 2 dollars or something.I was really happy when i had the money for it.I ordered the skateboard yesterday and I'm super happy

I love how fluent you skate and yet you still call yourself out on mistakes. You really stick true to progress daily man. Thank you for your time and videos. I do have a request though. I have been skating since 10 years old and I'm 31 now. in those 21 years I have never landed a kickflip, not once. I can do heel flips and loads of heel flip variations from inward heelflips to varials, laserflips. and I can do some fakie heel variations like fake inwards, and fakie varial and fakie lasers and even bs halfcab heels. I love watching you kickflip, you have one of the cleanest kickflips in my opinion. So my question is, How do you kickflip? I have watched so many tutorial videos and they just don't click it for me. And unfortunately I don't have any friends who skateboard so getting a visual and assistance on what I'm doing incorrect is kind of impossible. Do you have any recommendations on how to train/practice the flick for one? Any advice would be appreciated. Regardless, I appreciate the content and would Truly embrace any advice. thanks, Kyle.

about the community i'm really glad with the one at my local, i had never had a lot of money to spend on boards so after my first board i was offered this used board by a guy who bought a new one for himself, he said he would snap it but he liked my skills so he gave it as my board was well destroyed. and recently it happened again when a friend gave me a spare board he had, becasue of this i was able to save up enough to buy new trucks and bearings... the money was going to go for a new board but as he was A REAL BLESS i was able to afford more than that. personally i want to be like that towards the community, be able to help
