Top review TMF. My first gear was from Richa, couldn’t fault it, leather trousers and jacket, used for 10 years and then sold them on eBay. Don’t get the recognition they deserve in my opinion.

I view jackets like this as cheap insurance rather than expensive gear - given the cost of repairing or rebuilding the human wearing it. However, I completely understand folks criticizing the cost and the frustration of not being able to afford a garment like this one.

It's about time that HMRC scrapped vat on motorcycle gear. As you said it is for PPE ( No Vat on PPE) however we all have 20% vat on all our gear.

There's no VAT on helmets because they're a legal requirement; while motorcycle clothing is now classed as PPE, there's no compulsion to wear it. Only if motorcyclists were forced to wear certified clothing would removing VAT become something the government considered... John

Good shout on the Oxford Modial jacket. With the amount of cold weather riding I do there’s no way I could justify the Gortex one on test here, but with a discount from Colchester Kawasaki I got the Modial for £210. Best jacket I’ve had! Now I need the trousers and I’m set for the whole year.

For a laminate jacket I have a Revit Poseidon 2, which has all the advantages of the Arc but solves the negative points : the Poseidon 2 has pretty good ventilation (chest panels, arm vents, resr vents), level 2 elbow and shoulder protection (like with a lot of jackets the back protection has to be bought separately), adjustable popper for the neck strap. Expensive, but so far pleased with it. Only criticism is it’s too hot when it gets above high twentys (Celsius).

these laminate jackets are good but you really need two jackets one for winter to spring and vented for summer with a rain over coat.

Gore-Tex is awesome, but it's so expensive. The 3rd ride out in my new Alpinestars saw me going down the road on my ear, so got to try out the Gore-Tex repair patches (surprisingly difficult to find genuine), but can confirm they work. My advice is to buy the out going item, rather than the new shiny line, it works the same, it's just a styling exercise.

Without wanting to upset the apple cart! Compared to other brands this is actually rather cheap! I don’t have one as I don’t need one as I’m happy with the Gore Tex kit I already have, just suggesting that this is a reasonable price for a jacket that according to Mr TMF! Great review Mr TMF

Just had mine delivered today. Fit is good although I would say it is a bit stiff. I put a wider back protector in from one of my other jackets and also added the chest armour. The liner is better than most I have seen in my experience but like you I prefer to choose my own layers. Tried the Arc over a down jacket and started to get quite toasty very quickly. Also tried it for fit over my Keis heated jacket. Fit was fine in both cases. I noticed some nice attention to detail with colour coded tabs for the liner attachment points in the cuffs. Nice touches like that let you know you have got some well considered kit. Trousers arrive on Monday so looking forward to trying both together for flexibility and freedom of movement.

I ride every day in every weather and this year I bought a Triumph Malvern jacket (Goretex Pro Laminate). Its 100% waterproof and I managed to get it for £400 in a sale. Yes its another £600 List price) jacket but I ride 8,000 miles a year so to me its worth every penny. When I get in at night I shake the water off and I ready to go next morning. You are right once you go laminate you would never go back to a jacket with a drop liner.

Great review and Jacket, I have the Richa Cyclone GTX jacket and pants myself and find them great during the cold wet weather, no leaks so far and very warm, these are a Belgium brand (where i live now, ex pat) and the locals at the Richa factory in Oudenaarde pronounce it Ric-Ha not Rich-A, they have a store attached to the Factory and i walked away with very much lighter pockets then when i arrived :)

Laminate is the only way to go. I have a Revit Poseidon for the last 2.5 years and its great in all conditions. I was limited for choice here in the west of Ireland so had to go to thevisorshop in Newry to try some on. Well worth the trip as I was going to buy a Rukka but the Revit fitted better and was cheaper too 😀. Its a big investment so fit and comfort are essential.

I also have the Poseidon jacket which increasingly has become my go to choice .Ventilation could be better but Goretex apply tough standards for their product to be used ,hence often less vents for maximum waterproofing .In terms of cost shop around.I found Poseidon 2 pants on a German site for a total of a third less for those living outside the EU .

Good review...hopefully the cost of laminated jackets will come down as they become more the norm. I have a non laminated gore tex jacket and although it's great, and waterproof, it 'wets out ' on long wet rides . That makes you feel pretty cold and the jacket takes an age to dry out...not great on your travels. You can of course put a rain jacket over your jacket!!, but laminated keeps it simple and is well worth it! Cheers Steve

For you it's a no brainer with your daily riding it makes perfect sense.. For us Sunday riders (Used to ride everyday) it's just too expensive .But a great jacket none the less. I'll stick to my £350 Weisse leather which i got brand new with tags for £60 from some poor soul who got the wrong size ..And my rst ma1 bomber(£100 when new in the summer..both of which have full Ce armour..the top rated armour whichever number that is.. But yes if i were riding daily it would be sensible to invest its a really good jacket .. cheers Young Mr Flyer peace and love 👍🏻☮❤

Richa have just brought out the Infinity Pro 2 jacket with their own laminate. And Oxford are upping their game (hopefully) with the Hinterland. Both less than half the price of the Arc. Yes, Gore-Tex is great, but I'm hoping the days of manufacturers using it as an excuse to fleece the punters are finally coming to an end. For what it's worth, I wear an Oxford Mondial Advanced jacket - bought partly based on recommendations given here. It's the most comfortable and practical jacket I've owned.

Richa has made an error on their label! It states “prEN 17092-2” and “A” classification, but prEN 17092-2 is the standard for the *highest*, “AAA” classification. For the *lowest*, “A” classification the standard is prEN 17092-4. Which standard is this jacket actually approved to and at which performance classification?

Most textile kit is only CE level A rated. In terms of abrasion resistance, this means most of the jacket away from impact points (such as elbows and shoulders) is only tested to withstand a half second slide at just 16 mph! Hardly reassuring.
@paulvarnsverry11
@paulvarnsverry11 4 жыл бұрын
SteveR76 : That’s my assessment too. The textiles commonly in use in motorcycle clothing have a relative abrasion resistance time (when tested on the EN 13595-2 “Cambridge” impact abrasion machine) in the range 0.45 - 0.65 of one second - identical to a typical denim. Some garments incorporating heavier textiles are achieving prEN 17092 “AA” and, on a rarer basis, “AAA” classifications, but this still puts them well below even the Level 1 (of 2) requirements of EN 13595-1.

Check out kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHmplId4Z8uEms0. Moto legends have an excellent overview of the ratings. As identified in the video, testing is expensive. Some Garments are only A rated to be made legal but are probably higher but not tested. I would use AA or equivalent as coming off at motorway speeds using A or Urban kit isn’t good. As a previous contributor said, it’s a kind of insurance policy.
@johngreen1060

I see you are endorsing Bennetts. A word of warning to other viewers: Bennetts is happy to void your insurance at a whim, for any minor discrepancy, even if the mistake has originated on their side and you are contacting them to clarify it. It's happened to me, the discrepancy in question was that while the bike model name in their system matched the name used by the manufacturer and the dealer, the formal model name on V5C was slightly different, not in a meaningful way. That was enough for them to void my insurance. I didn't think much of it back then, just moved on to a more reputable company. But over the years I had no end of issues getting other kinds of insurance (companies typically ask if you had an insurance cancelled or voided, some are OK with that, many are not) costing me hundreds of pounds so far. Bennetts, you have cheated me and who knows how many others too. Seriously uncool.

Hello, I have just purchased a Goldwing for me and the wife to do some touring. I will mainly l ride 3 seasons as the days of winter wet riding are over for me. I am looking to get a laminate jacket which this one look nice although I am a bit concerned of the safety rating only being A where most recommend at least AA safety rating. I just wonder it’s because the armour is only L1 in the arms and shoulders is the reason why or it’s also the strength of the material? Maybe the L1 armour could be replaced with L2 but would this impact the fit that’s if it could be fitted at all. I just wonder how good D30 L1 protection is.. All the best Matt

Hi TMF, yup good to get cool gear to review, but definitely not priced for the feint of heart....I have Olympia Jackets and a Joe Rocket and all are geared for hot summer riding, they have liners and warm inner liners and have too say the most pricey one was $450 but bought it on sale for $249 on Revzilla.com... replacement D30 armor can be gotten for $80-$100 depending on sales on same website for back, elbow and shoulders. Hopefully, some of your viewers can afford the really expensive stuff, but Olympia ain’t bad if on a budget. Okay it isn’t dirt cheap either but doesn’t hurt as bad as the Richa or Rukka or Klim products. 😉

FAR too expensive, it should be absolutely perfect for that price, and you can see it isn't. There are considerably cheaper jackets, fortunately, on amazon that will run that pretty damm close at a 1/6th of the price. Unfortunately, motorcycling is turning into a luxury sport, but it needn't be. Manufacturers of high end, expensive gear are falling over themselves to throw their gear at KZbin vlogers ; I see Motorcycle Adventures recently had some insanely priced Revit boots on his channel, too. Manufacturers know the amazing advertising reach of KZbin channels, and riders desire for safer and safer gear so they are more than happy to make it, but prices are now getting silly and well beyond the 'well, you get what you pay for' old line. As I say, fortunately, a bit of research on Amazon, etc on the Internet, and you can ride safe without mortgaging your house.

FortNine did a brilliant video on the different membranes from different manufacturers a few months ago, well worth a watch. Goretex's big thing isn't just it's breathability but also it's seem sealing standards; to get the stamp of approval it must comply to all of their requirements. That's largely why it's so much expensive: the cost of testing and the licensing. Money well spent in my eye though, if you can afford it.
