On an engine like that an odd cylinder is needed to cancel out the worst of the vibrations.

For some reason, old truck engines were usually 71 cubic inches per cylinder, so I assume that old aircraft engines are twice that, or 142ci per cylinder. The math usually adds up pretty close, and here we see it again, 2 cylinders off a radial aircraft engine works out to about 5 liters, close to 300ci. What a beast!

A V twin with as much displacement as a small block V8.
@maekong20105 жыл бұрын
Yep. Basically, a 302 stuffed into two cylinders. I can't believe that 2 plugs per cylinder are all that is required to get an even burn. Wow.
@fohdmoco5 жыл бұрын
@@maekong2010 it has two plugs because its an airplane cylinder one plug fouls and you're going down
@maekong20105 жыл бұрын
@@fohdmoco I get what you're saying, Zack. But when you consider the surface area above a 2.5-liter piston, to get an even burn with only two plugs, it is rather surprising. That is what I was referring to. To my way of thinking, the 5-liter twin system might be better served with three plugs per cylinder, but far be it from me to insist on this. Regardless, a radially-configured (airplane) engine, (from which an HD V-Twin is a "slice") there are typically 5-9 concentric cylinders sharing a complex crank so, generally speaking, more than one cylinder would have to fail to actually bring a plane down. It would just sound like a motor with a hellacious skip, but shouldn't really be a problem to land. Thus, I believe the dual-plug configuration was designed to assure even burn across the surface of each piston/combustion chamber, (which on airplane engines were/are quite large) as both plugs, if/when there were two, likely fired off the same set of contact points and would fail in unison, anyway. I could be wrong, as I worked this out in my head rather than actually look anything up, which has, at times, ended embarrassingly for me. But I'm what you would call a "risk-taker." ;-)
@fohdmoco5 жыл бұрын
@@maekong2010 no it would just miss lol but you'd better find a landing strip fast
@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney4 жыл бұрын
Maekong Mike Aircraft engines have two of everything (fuel pump, oil pump, magneto, spark plugs, etc.), each perfectly capable of running the engine as designed individually, for redundancy in case of a part failure, so that the engine will still run properly until it can land and have the part replaced. One plug will do the job. Some of those crazy big old Rolls Royce aviation engines had even bigger cylinders and were built the same way. Compressed gasoline vapor burns fast, and these were low-rpm engines in an era when no one gave a tinker's damn about efficiency or emissions, one plug is plenty so long as it sparks.

Well, you start at the age of 2 yrs.; making engine sounds with your Tonka trucks in the sandbox ... and it just kind of takes its own course from there. Eventually, you find yourself playing in your own Garage / Machine Shop ... and you build whatever crazy idea comes to mind. 😉

talk about each cylinder fighting each other lol the SU carbs are so far out that that engine would be fighting itself and making fuck all power you have to have both carbs setup on a 2 into 1 cable and it needs to be in sync/balanced

It was the first test run and it ran :) I've now made my own carbs from scratch and it now runs really nice :) see several TV programs on catch-up 2017 IOM Classic TT review and The Motorbike show :)

Reminiscent of the old John Deere B’s at any tractor pull.....fires every 20 seconds or so, never stalls and pulls 200% of its weight !!. Agreed......the “open header into the gas can” setup is brilliant!!!!
