I have always found age uke to be a most useful technique. In sparring and fights it is a useful block and also a useful strike. Age uke can also be used as an eyeflash, a fist strike and an elbow strike. Further, in real wold self defence it is an excellent technique against head butts and grabs. It is a technique that can produce serious power even when done by fairly inexperienced people.

With all due respect to Nakayama-sensei, I do prefer the version with first extending the arm as practiced by Kanazawa-sensei. I like to think of it as a parry to a swinger or something, and then the Age-Uke slamming right into the neck. But then again, I would have a slight critic here, as the extended hand should go BELOW the striking arm, as you're clearing the swinger out of the way to get a clear path towards the neck.

Osu, nothing is really black and white in these cases. As long as the articulation of the body is governed by principle then we're free to explore. Thanks for commenting

I like to think of this technique as being an upward punch of sorts, so I focus on the triceps as the extensors of the arm. Nice video.

James Copeland I understand what you mean but the triceps works best when the elbow is a more fixed pivot point eg for uraken. For age uke (or agezuki) I find linking the fist to the core via the armpit a good image, keeping the hit straight and true.

@@richardamos3173 I think we are in agreement here. My point was that it has to be as you have shown.....Many karate ka lift the arm with the shoulder muscles rather than using the extensors which makes it slower.

Amazing lesson sensei! Thank you! You are a natural teacher through and through! Now if only we could get you to move to southern California and have you all to ourselves! :)

Osu, very nice of you to comment. As for southern California....seems like a very nice idea right now as the NY temps drop to the 30s!
