I'm sure you didn't mean it this way, but many people assume that those with social inhibition and anxiety are either just making it up and it's not a real condition, or are somehow intellectually impaired. Richard proves them wrong on both counts. Actually, those with SA often have to put far more thought into situations and develop coping strategies to deal with everyday events that most of us will take for granted.

Perhaps you could meet, on a regular basis, in a fantasy setting that cast you in your best possible light. If this 'place' was an environment that had portal access to the real world, such as Narnia, you could make brief forays into our reality and see the lay of the emotional land. Conducting a series of such reconnaissances, perhaps with a play to increasing their extensions through time, would allow for a synergy of experience that could eventually lead to Richard not only not hating you in real life but in fact demonstrating at worst an indifference to you in our reality whilst maintaining his fondness of you in Narnia, or, best case scenario, treasuring your existence in our existence and thus allowing you to dismantle your scaffolded relationship altogether in Narnia, or other fantasy reality with reliable portal access of your choosing.
