In the sleevenotes of the album “Richard Carpenter’s Piano Songbook” (2022) he writes: “Not all that long ago, I was in Tokyo promoting the recently released "Carpenters with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra" album. While visiting one of the morning shows, I was asked to take a seat at the piano, and play "I Need To Be In Love", one of our biggest hits in Japan. My interpretation was born of the moment, but seemed to please my hosts. Stay with me, this is actually going somewhere. Not long after returning home, I received a call from a Rachel Holmberg, Senior Head of A&R with Decca Records, U.K., who possesses a lovely accent and a personality to match. Now, it wasn't all that long ago, that what happened in Japan, stayed in Japan. Like my piano solo. Not anymore. Through the miracle of modern technology, Rachel saw the morning show, heard my solo, and asked if I might be interested in recording an album of Carpenters songs along the lines of "I Need to Be In Love". In other words, solo. Just piano. Now. I've not only been into music since I was a kid, but records as well, and everything to do with them like their labels. In the late forties and early fifties, the Big Three labels were: Columbia, Victor, and DECCA. Bing Crosby was on Decca. As I asked Rachel if this was really what she and the label wanted, I could only think of my Mom and Dad, and what an enormous compliment this was to their boy, who never wanted to practice. I kept asking Rachel, if she was absolutely certain this is what she and Decca wanted, because to my way of thinking, this album would put a number of people to sleep, but she preferred to think of it as music to relax by. Either way, this was a challenge. For somebody who likes to turn everything into a production, like our records, to adapting them for solo piano was a tall order. But the piano is a remarkable instrument, with a remarkable range, and I believe I've given the songs chosen a fairly good reading. I thank Rachel Holmberg for giving me this opportunity, and her talented team for their enthusiasm and continued belief in this undertaking. Whether you've purchased this album for relaxation, or a good night's sleep, I truly hope you enjoy it. Richard” So… (Stay with me, this is actually going somewhere!) I think this was the early morning Japanese tv show that spawned the album!

Great get! And thanks for pointing that out. As I listened to "Richard Carpenters Piano Songbook," the emotions built up with each song until four songs in I got "Close to you." His arrangement and playing in that track were so spectacular that I was overwhelmed and turned it off and have not returned to it since.

The Carpenters have always been very highly regarded in Japan. Richard is a virtuoso pianist. He was genius at picking out songs that highlighted Karen's God-given voice, and crafting their arrangements in the studio. He also composed the music for many of their hit songs. He never seems to get any recognition from the music industry for his contributions. Carpenters sold over 100M records! I hope Richard is blessed with some grandchildren soon!

I would love to see The Carpenters receive The Kennedy Center Honor!
