/ vinyltovideo Richard Crooks sings St. Thomas Aquinas' / Franck's "Panis Angelicus." This was recorded January 16, 1942 with Charles O'Connell conducting the Victor Symphony Orchestra. Sorry for the somewhat crude sound quality.

This is absolutely beautiful! Crooks was just wonderful in music like this. One of the finest American tenors, often seriously under-rated, unfortunately.

+Edmund StAustell I agree and it's sad.

Simply SPLENDID singing that is non-existent today. Spontaneity, Squillo and "effortless" delivery as demonstrated by Crooks, is representative of the Golden Era of Singing, no longer heard since then.

A wonderful performance and one of his finest recordings.

I have a recording of him singing this in English. JCT also performed it several times on radio with exquisite latinity "panees" "figyooris"

Panis Angelicus must be sung in Latin. It would be a vocal crime to sing it in any other language.

"Gross" recording. Surely it could have and should have been digitized or "cleaned up" some how. Esp. with "techno" that is available today. Crooks was obviously in top form when he recorded it. Damn shame.

It was cleaned up. The old 78 was shot. Unless someone has a mint copy out there of this rare record we're lucky to have even this.

You put in Panis anggelicus and all you get is Bocelli, Bocelli and more Bocelli. This is in another league as are Gigli, Schipa and Tucker.

Marvellously sung. Lousy recording, though.

+Patrick Tee The recording is fine; more than anything it's the particular record this transfer came from. If the original master could be found the transfer should sound great. It's probably sitting in some vault long forgotten by Sony.

Here is another cleaned up recording but in comparison sounds sterile to me. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5nZg4tsjMp6frs
