La voz de ángel junto al mejor tenor americano de todos los tiempos. Sencillamente fenomenal.

Peerce always sang in full voice without dynamics that are proper for this bel canto opera. We need not any comparison with bel canto tenors like Schipa, Gigli, Tagliavini, Alva, Monti, Simoneau, Valletti, Gedda.or Kraus. However, Peerce had a bright and solid voice not so beautiful as maestro Toscanini liked tenor voices. Greetings,

When this recording was made in 1946, I was two years old. My father, who had a beautiful, warm baritone, taught voice at the U. of Md., loved opera, and I came to know many of the greats. However, I've never heard of Grace Moore. I'll have to do some homework! Enjoyed this! Thank you!

Peerce is just great, but not so perfect. Though Jan Peerce´s voice was solid, steady, without wobble and bright, he did not have a beautiful timbre, that was nasal and he could not sing with dymanic or inflections, because he always sang in full voice, like other tenors with similar voices and timbre. So, his voice looks like Kurt Baum´s and Achille Braschi´s or Richard Tucker´s. Toscanini never chose tenors with beautiful voices, but similar voices (Pertile, Peerce and Tucker, and Ramón Vinay). If we compare di Stefano´s Rodolfo´s with Maria Callas (1956) or Licia Albanese, some years earlier, Peerce is very far without expression, dynamics, sotto voce, crescendos or diminuendos. In short, his voice is so cold without expression. In any case, Peerce was a superb tenor with those vocal limitations. Greetings,

The following cabaletta, O mio rimorso, was sung before Pavarotti by some tenors, among them Carlo Bergonzi and Nicolai Gedda. Both recorded it: Bergonzi with Sutherland and Gedda with Sills. Its final high C is eluded by most of tenors.

I managed to get my hands on a complete book of 3 shellac discs of this recording, for my 108-year-old Victrola. The sound isn't QUITE as good as this, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. Thanks for posting!

The sound film was developed in the 1920s. One of the first significant breakthroughs was the film “The Jazz Singer”, which was released by Warner Bros. in 1927. Why was this important audio recording not filmed?
@VinylToVideo2 ай бұрын
If the FULL broadcast were listened to, it would become more apparent why there was no film. It was simply an advertisement radio broadcast paid for by General Motors in which the President of General Motors spoke during the intermission of both broadcasts. While its historic importance seemed to have been realized on some level at the time, it apparently wasn't enough for the expense of it being filmed to be taken on. I'm sure even a few years later if they could have gone back they'd have done so.

I am so thankful for the Voice of Firestone and the Bell Telephone hour and Ed Sullivan for recording so many of these artists for us. (Yes, the audiences of the time were the principle reason, but we also benefit.)
