Shows what a great man Dreyfuss is; that he could drop all pretense and just feel the emotion, regardless of the fact he was being watched by millions. So cool. I've noticed when people get older, they remember a comrade who has passed on, even one who may have been initially troublesome to deal with, with much tenderness and fondness. If we could only have that sense of grace all of our life, and while in the midst of our (sometimes hard) interactions with others.

Incredible thing for a girl so young to do. Her grandfather would be very proud of her for approaching Dreyfuss on his behalf...any bad blood that may have existed between Richard and Shaw on the set of Jaws has been ultimately flushed out.

Wow, it's real humility that, very rarely seen or expressed from someone with his status so to speak, pretty heart warming. The scene when Shaw and him are talking about the Indianapolis was astounding.

I love Jaws, and the three amigos who went out to hunt that "25 feet, 3 tons of em." I remember seeing Robert Shaw in The Deep and thought he was a great after and then in Jaws, he became one of my favorite actors. Dreyfuss and Schieder are great too I've seen several movies of theirs also, but Robert Shaw made a great character actor in all that he did. His granddaughter should be proud of him.

After the shark itself, Quint undoubtedly was the star and anti-hero of the film. People say it was his best role to date. He definitely died too early though as you get the feeling that his career would have sky-rocketed soon after Jaws. Pity we never got to see...

God. That was the most terrifying scene of the film. I was so young, went with my cousins and we picked Jaws over Bambi (I'm not even joking). The sharks were terrifying dont get me wrong, but Shaw's monologue in that cabin holy mother of god, now that was terrifying.

No shame in it at all. Jaws was THE defining work of Dreyfuss' career, and meeting Shaw's granddaughter must have been brought all those memories right back out. Kind of amusing though, because by all account Shaw and Dreyfuss could hardly stand each other on the set.

I've listened to Roy Schieder (sp) talk about the production of Jaws, and he's pretty clear it was a big pain in the butt. So it doesn't surprise me that Richard Dreyfuss gets weepy about the past, meeting Robert Shaw's little granddaughter. After all, the easy times are easily forgotten.

Where's the rest of the interview?! Serrasongs, it wasn't that Richard didn't like Robert, it was more that Robert stayed in character in that he didn't want to get chummy with Richard & kept up the adversarial relationship off screen.

Even if Shaw and Dreyfuss didn't get along on set, that was probably at least in part by design. Spielburg is infamous/famous for manipulating actors to get real reactions out of them, and Shaw and Dreyfuss were at much different places in their careers. But fuck, once Dreyfuss saw the finished product and what performances came out of it any lingering resentment (if any) had to have gone away instantly.

watching the little Shaw cutie tearing up, got me crying like Dreyfus! I loved Shaw and was stunned when he died. It felt a lot like when I heard at age 11 that Bruce Lee had died suddenly at 32. Not the actor Shaw was, of course, but a giant in his own right with so much promise - like Shaw (much of it realized I suppose, but 51 is young for a man to go suddenly).

im 26 and i watched jaws for the first time 25th feb 2015.... and i absolutely LOVED IT! omg... i dont know why i didnt watch it sooner... and ***spoiler alert**** i wanted quint to survive the most... and when he got eaten i was like omfg... noooo! because he was telling a story earlier on inside the boat about hearing screams when his crewmates were being eaten by sharks when his ship went down in WW2... and then he was screaming like that 30 mins later... loved the movie but quint was the highlight for me and i never knew who he was until i searched robert shaw and he played red grant in from russia with love! then... the mood changed when i saw robert shaw b 1927 - 1978... such a good actor gone way too soon its very sad but... its good that i got to see him as quint for the first time.. and man spielberg... what a fucking legend. If im right... he made jaws at 26! the age i am now... very impressive. Id actually say jaws is in my top 5 now... so good on shaw for taking the role i read he only took the role because his wife told him too... the film wouldnt have been the same without him RIP mate

I always thought Richard Dreyfuss was such a class act. I rate him right up there, with Tom Hanks as far as acting goes. I didn't even know that Robert Shaw had died, till I was watching the "Special Edition" Jaws dvd & I saw it, in the special features. Yet, another great talent taken away from us, way to damn soon. Go figure.

It was a bit different for me. Pop was a Seabee in the Philippines at that time & helped unload the bomb parts. Besides building the runways, etc. Some of the asides to his story spoke of sharks, beer, CO's, death & killing to survive. Quint will forever remind me of pop & those brave men & their "can do!" attitude.

He "menaced" that role into well-deserved fame. Had everything down perfectly - the limp, the snarl, the brooding mood exploding into unbridled avarice. I haven't seen anyone like him since then, which tells you which wrong way the Hollywood herd went. Back then, the title of the movie was "The Sting." Today, it's "The Moo."

Dreyfuss, to his credit, exposed himself. He was quite intimated by Shaw. And to see his lovely, granddaughter, overwhelmed him. Her innocence and purity exposed his emotions. You and I would have done the same. However, Dreyfuss should not have been so cocky during the filming. Just my opinion.

@christiancowboy100

You are missing the reason. It has to do with male relationships. I just watched the documentary as well and it did not say they literally hated each other. It implied their was antagonism and that Shaw teased Dreyfuss to get a reaction out of him. Shaw was a bigger than life actor compared to the young Dreyfuss. Looking back on it I believe that as Dreyfuss matured he realized that Shaw had made him a better actor and person. And because he was never able to tell him that their was no closure after Shaw's early death until he met his grand daughter.

Well, we've heard Shaw supposedly gave him shit a lot during Jaws but perhaps whatever he was complaining about at the time was actually true and that after all these years, Dreyfuss has come to respect him for that instead of being angry with him, sort of like a father that gives you shit but who you actually learn something from. I could easily see that. And like adtvx pointed out above me said, just closure to a long ride. I'm sure it's emotional for Dreyfuss that they parted on bad terms, Shaw died and then Jaws went on to have a life of it's own and become a huge ongoing blockbuster and it did actually make Dreyfuss' career and I've heard him say that. He said somewhere that he really wanted Jaws because he felt he had done a poor job of The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz.

They did go at each other a great deal. But the situation was also in part to blame. As we all know the set was maddening with all the delays, so it no doubt put a great deal of strain on everyone that might not have been there had the situation not been so intolerable. Plus they did respect one another as actors and there were bonding moments, sober and drunk, I'd heard that they shared as well. But the other important aspect of what may have happened is the sheer unconscious bonding that goes on when you make a film, or a play and are in such close quarters for so long. There can be an element of a family feeling, for lack of a better word. The film was stalled so badly by the shark not working that the actors would often improvise and work out stuff to do with Speilberg. This was a real arduous, hands-on, mess that many people thought was going to bomb! In fact prior to the release of the film, Dreyfuss came out and tried to disassociate himself from the film, not blaming Speilberg, but I think the studio brass. It was a hot mess. There were other circumstances too. I believe, Shaw's wife, the fine acttress Mary Ure, died while they were on location doing "Jaws". She died under very strange circumstances. And Shaw was devastated. No doubt they came together over that as well. And the fact that indeed this larger than life, amazingly talented man, Robert Shaw died so young obviously had a huge effect on Dreyfuss, especially at this stage of his life. A very touching moment for Dreyfuss and Shaw's young grand-daughter who does bear a resemblance for sure.
