Imagine smashing your head along the interior of the car as it drops straight down into the water like hitting solid concrete, you're bleeding from your head which is now running into your eyes, couple that with a possible concussion and maybe you can imagine why in certain circumstances it would be difficult for someone to get out as quickly as possible.

@SunbatherInTheSnow
@SunbatherInTheSnow 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, that's pretty much what should have happened in that MythBusters experiment (the second underwater car episode, in which they made the car turn turtle on impact in open water). Unfortunately, a factor they'd apparently somewhat overlooked in their risk assessment was that the car had belonged to a heavy smoker. The cigarette residues fouled the water so badly that Adam Savage couldn't see a thing once his face was submerged, and safety diver Don, even with his eyes protected, had extremely limited visibilty.

if you cant for some reason, for example your busy unbuckling a child's seatbelt or anything and the car does sink below the surface, ive heard that smashing the window (having one of those tools that can smash a window and tear a seatbelt would be handy) with anything sharp and pointy works.

When I was 20 years old myself and a friend were going to a Halloween fireworks party. It was a cold foggy night. We were on a road parallel to a canal. The car ended up in the canal in 3mtrs of water upside down. My friend got out the door. I cannot to this day remember how I got out. The next day the fire service removed the car. One door was open (where my pal got out) and the window on my side was open. I do not remember opening the window or anything before that. The only thing I vaguely remember is a person dragging me from the water (lock keeper)

car companies should really think about installing mandatory ejector seats.........
@gbzhemn1
@gbzhemn1 10 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure you thought that through entirely... The two main reasons those work for airplanes is because; 1: The number of obstacles to potentially get ejected into in the sky is negligible. 2: You get to land on a nice parachute. And basically that's why the ejector seat in an aircraft doesn't kill you. =) A far better idea would be to place a valve in the car that; 1: Opens up instantly in case of a crash. 2: Can equalize the pressure real quick. It would prevent negative pressure from building up, and thus you can open your doors and/or windows. Unless, of course, they have been deformed by the crash wich is also common.

Things you should/could do strongly depends on the situation. But as I recall Mythbusters didn't just say, they did show. One thing they have in common though is that if you can't open the door and get out of the car before it starts to go under the water then you won't be able to get out until the car filled with water. For Hammond it didn't work until the car hit the bottom, for Savage it worked after var filled in. Theoretically fluid mechanics is on Mythbusters' side. In practice we have two different results documented on camera. So I'd say better try your best to avoid those kind of situations.

The Mercedes SLS AMG has the weird doors in it which can't open when the car is rolled so they have exploding bolts in them which trigger when the car goes upside down, maybe a simillair system could be built into all cars which is triggered by a crash to blow open the doors after the initial crash, so they protect you during the crash and then when movement calms down again they free the doors. Even when the doors are mangled up, releasing the hinges should make it a lot easier to open them anyway so why aren't we doing this?

I like snorkeling, so I practice holding my breath - it's a real discipline. You have to be calm, and stay calm. It helps first to hyperventilate for maybe 5 or 10 seconds before the hold - that will saturate your blood with oxygen a bit more, which helps. Then, after about a minute or so, my lungs begin to spasm a bit, and that's when mental calm really needs to kick in, because I find I can last at least another minute before I really start feeling the need to breathe. I don't usually take it much further than that, but on the few occasions I have, my eyesight begins to "fade," and the urge to breathe becomes undeniable. I've seen videos of young divers who can hold their breaths for up to 5 minutes in deep-dive or spearfishing competitions, even to the point where they go unconscious. Of course, they're being watched. - Sometimes, during movies where the person is supposed to be holding their breath underwater, I hold it with them, to see if I can last as long. "The Abyss," certain James Bond movies, Star Trek IV, etc., they all have scenes where breath holding happens. It's not a bad skill to develop because you never know when it might come in handy.

To smash a window from inside: remove the headrest. It should have metal prongs that slot into the seat. This is likely to be the best object to smash the glass.

alternate approach, and this is what I hear is recommended most of the time: before the electrical systems go (Or if you're lucky enough to have manual windows) open a window and use that to equalize the pressure

Now I see why so many people install an AutoXscape 1 escape tool in the car. I used to be curious about people who spent $60 on a tool that you never want to use. Just imagine the frightening experience...I never thought I need a home security camera(though I have one) until a burglar entered my house when I was out. Everyone should prepare such professional gears for security. It's better to have one when you don't need it than you need one but you don't have it.

True. Most people likely hit something first, THEN went into the water. I'll add to that that you might have gotten hurt/disoriented in the crash/your door is damaged so it won't open anyway. Worse yet, if you crash at night, it could be very disorienting not knowing how far from shore you are. That "helpful tool" does you no good IF you have a broken arm/it flys out of where you've placed it.

yes it would actually. if you do not roll them down in time then the pressure will hold them shut as well as the door. if you try and the water has reached the window then your crank will probably break. so you must roll them down before the water reaches the windows.

+Company007 If your window is electrically operated you have seconds to get it down before the system fries. Also you might get stuck on the window if it didnt go down far enough. Trying to kick open the door is a lot faster and thus safer.

well not quite.... some electric windows take more time to open and some might fail to... smashing the glass is a guaranteed half-a-second way to get out... and considering that nowadays glass is made to shater and not break into big pieces that can slice you, you cant get hurt (idealy)

If you can remember this, open up the windows before you dive in, and it should equalize more quickly. Also you can escape through the windows instead of wasting energy opening the door. From Mythbusters.

Another problem with breaking the window, when there is more pressure on the outside than the inside, the glass shards are going to be blasted by the pressure inwards and towards you. Basically if you are disoriented than you will drown unless you have manual windows.

Although the water pressure would probably make it very hard to open the door, with all the water pushing against it, you would need a lot of force to make it open.

If you crack your windows before landing in the water, the pressure equalizes much quicker before you hit the bottom and you can get out before dying.
