Basically it’s a song about hedonism in all its forms, be it ice cream or other sensual desires. Richard Thompson is such an outstanding songwriter, and one of the best guitarists around. Well worth digging in to more by him, whether solo or with his ex wife Linda.

I don't think you're wrong about there being a number of double entendres there Brad! This is a fun song, with some tasty guitar work from the genius Richard Thompson. It's nowhere near the best intro to Richard and Linda Thompson, however. For a real measure of Richard's songwriting brilliance and Linda's magisterial singing, I'd recommend The Great Valerio, Dimming Of The Day, For Shame Of Doing Wrong, or I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight.
