I used to see this particular car sit in the dealership showroom in my town when it was brand new, St. Augustine, FL, as kid growing up. The story went it was sold, and the buyer didn't like it, and traded it in on something else. The owner of the dealership kept it in the showroom for over 20 years. When he sold the dealership, he kept the Superbird and put it in a warehouse right next to my shop. I used to go over and look at it from time to time. He would not sell it. He eventually passed away, and his family held an estate sale auction. If memory serves it sold for $85,000 to a childhood friend of my brother. He got it running, and sold it sometime later for somewhere around $145,000. I can't remember exactly what year that was, somewhere around 2005 I think.

@@rickbailey189 I was 7 the first time I went new car shopping with the Mom and Dad. We went to the Ford place first and the first thing we saw was a 64&1/2 Mustang convertible metal flake green with a white top and white upholstery. Of course it was the one I wanted. Sticker price was 3,295.00, but the sales manager was willing to knock 800 off the sticker because it was end of year clearance. Daddy told him I'll be back and let you know. I got the privilege of seeing one of these cars up close back about 40 years ago. Car was only 13 years old back then. At night, the bright yellow paint and rich black vinyl top shined beautifully under the street lights. The car looked like it was brand new. It was a 440 with automatic transmission floor shifter. Someone sat up on top of the wing. IT did NOT bend. Made out of steel. MADE IN USA! That's American muscle for ya. Go Mopar.

I got to see a 70 S.B. in 1983 up close. It was Lemon Twist(deep yellow) with a strikingly rich black vinyl top. Gorgeous car with a 440 and auto on the floor shifter. Someone that night decided to plop their ass on top of the center of the wing. It did NOT bend much less break. It was gorgeous black vinyl or leather interior. As a kid in those days you were impressed to see something like that. It was a rare sighting for me. Total unit production of 1970 Plymouth Super birds was 1935. You're seeing just 1 of 77 with 426 HEMI option.

@@rickbailey189 Plymouth themselves never cared about actually selling these cars, the only reason they were sold at all to the public was because NASCAR regulations had a rule that stated a car can only be raced in NASCAR if it sells a certain amount of that variant to the general public, which I think by 1970 the regulations were 2 for every 1 Plymouth dealership. I could be wrong though, but prior to the Bird you had the Dodge Daytona which had to sell 500 production models in 1969

@@The.Rooster Correct. 1935 Super Birds were produced and 503 Dodge Daytona's. Both were "1 year wonders." FORD and CHRYSLER Motors were duking it out like two heavyweight boxers out on the racing circuit. These 2 variations of the WING CAR were produced so that they could attain that "magic 200 MPH". I believe it was BIll France(NASCAR God father) was the one who imposed those rules. I believe it was 1 Super BIrd for every 2 Plymouth dealerships, hence 3870...give or take. The wing cars were laughable at the time an nobody really wanted them so many just sat a dealerships for several years. Today, they're worth a mint(fortune). Most especially the HEMI versions. The little cowls on either side of the hood were meant to conceal a ventilation system which created vacuum pressure which created a downdraft pulling the car closer to the track making it even more aerodynamic. Interestingly the Superbirds never received the venting. The cowls were really just for show. Daytonas have the vent system and if you look under the cowls, you can se a pattern of holes drilled through the body to facillitate the air to flow. Seems kinda low tech, but it works. If you've ever been in a Daytona when you get up to around 80 mph you can actually feel the car being pulled down closer to the road deck.

Blame Bill France(NASCAR God) for Mopar having to build these funny looking wing cars for just 1 year only. They were built for NASCAR to go racing against Ford's out on the racing circuit. The wing and large nose cone were installed so the car can hit 200 MPH on the racing circuits. Most were running 426 racing Hemis and Richard Petty #43 had a blue one he raced for Plymouth.

Technically it was 2 years counting the Dodge Daytona, and the funny thing is that they were built to demolish Ford, but were so good at it that they got straight up banned from NASCAR in '71 because they "were concerned with the high speeds they produced"

@@The.Rooster technically that is not factual at all..............look at the race records........after the introduction of the Daytona, they performed very poory..........in fact at Rockingham in 1969 the closest Daytona was 20 laps down..............in all, the winged mopars only entered 24 total races and won 14 with the Fords winning 10. They didnt demolish anything..........and they were never banned, one of the PRO MOPAR sited, Alpar actually has the 1971 rule book which simply states that ALL Special aero body cars will be limited to a 305 inch engine if ran in 71...........the exact same rules applied to the Fords.
