The Richard Savage - Stevie Cruz fights were epic. Some of the best amateur bouts ever. Being able to see fights on network TV back then was a real treat.

You are doing a great service compiling, editing and narrating all these insane amount of footage about boxers of every level from past decades; I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that you might have saved a lot of material that could had gotten lost if not for you Rich, so props to you, I always look forward to see your uploads.

Used to work out at the West Monroe Boxing Club in the 1990s with Richard. He'd occasionally appear and was always a nice guy. Thanks for this, it's crazy to see young Sparky McDuffie and Bruce McDaniel in his corner!!

When I was a kid my dad used to turn off the volume for anything that Howard cosell was commentating on. I was tempted to do the same during Howard's introduction to the Cruz fight. 😊

Sometimes Howard could be boorish. I thought he did a decent job here.

Crazy that stevie cruz ended up getting the fight with barry mc guigan and beating him in a scorching hot ring in vegas while richard savage fell into obscurity. Stevie grew up in texas and barry in ireland. The vegas heat just melted him and stevie cruz took advantage of his opportunity. Can't remember who stevie lost to but he did not keep his belt for long. As usual another outstanding bio by Rich the fight historian. Shining light on some of boxing most hidden gems! 😊

My family bought that PPV. Cruz-McGuigan was on the undercard of a Thomas Hearns fight. If that fight took place after the sun went down the result might have been different. Or maybe not, Cruz was a heck of a fighter.

Thank you, Baja. Spot on about Cruz/McGuigan.

Never heard of Savage… but Cruz broke UK hearts when he beat McGuigan (I met Barry once and is a real nice guy)

Saw richard savage on U.S.A cable as a young pro in 1984 and 1985, i thought he was a sure champion, angelo dundee was doing commentary on one of the fights and commented how good savage was, i guess we were both wrong .

Apparently didn’t get hooked up with the right people to guide his professional career. Maybe he peaked as an amateur.. It was a common problem for a lot of amateur stars from that era who had already competed in hundreds of unpaid contests . Once they turned pro ,their best days were already behind them.
