The Internal Family Systems model is an extremely popular form of psychotherapy that is increasingly being applied to coaching. Using it, coaches help clients quickly access a state called the Self which is characterized by qualities like calm, clarity, curiosity, and compassion. Then, from that state, clients explore and transform their relationships with the parts of them that are blocking their goals or their vision. Finally, they are more able to lead their personal and work lives from the state of Self-leadership which creates more harmony in their relationships. Psychologist and founder of Internal Family Systems, Richard Schwartz speaks in this webinar with the Institute of Coaching about how IFS works and provides a demonstration for listeners.

That last exercise was exactly what I needed! Perfect. I was able to do this myself now and it has freed me some hurt and anger with someone. Thank you for this video you’ve provided.

So helpful to hear the IFS viewpoint on narcissism, that it's a "part" and not a diagnosis. Narcissism is epidemic in the world today. One issue though it seems is that "protector" or "resistance" is likely to avoid therapy at all costs. I would so love to hear a case study from Richard describing working with a narcissist parts and what the result was. Thanks for sharing this with the world!

He talks about only a very specific type of narcissism though, which probably not even close to the most common one. And he doesn't mention (probably just because of time etc) the real hallmark of narcs: emotional abuse, sometimes along with physical abuse, and manipulation. These things cause real harm. The things he mentions would not be even close to enough on its own to call someone a clinical narcissist. I'm sure that's just because they didn't gi in debt or set out to accurately define the term though. He talk about grandiose and extroverted narcs. There is also covert n. And insecure n. Passive-aggressive n. Some coverts can be grandiose but usually not very extroverted. With that exception these others have lots of overlap. When people say there is so huge amounts of narcs, I tend to suspect they use it in totally different way than the true personality disorder. Because narcissistic people are cruel, usually sadistic (though often "only" emotionally) and often so good at hiding and being manipulative that it's impossible to spot unless you are one of their victims. Often their own closest family. Or other relatives, or co-dependent friends. People kill themselves, or are deeply traumatised, having dealt with them. And that's not because their superficial/over-confident (some are not at all. And many who are have sweet personalities) Loving praise and thinking highly of yourself isn't even close by itself. And most non-grandiose don't even have those qualities at all, or only in certain situations.

You can’t use this if someone doesn’t a sense of self … the self is the one being protected … how Cana narcissist differentiate parts and self if they completely negate the self? The self almost doesn’t exist in them , it died

Right. Not to mention masters or PhD level Psychology training to get the license they require. My experience, as a trauma based manual therapist, medical intuitive and certified chaplain, doing a lot of prayer ministry with people, using this method without those things can still help people a great deal. Seems like something that is self evident is God given and very important is doing our own work.
