@@Ami-jc2oo The story was basically that he found out the one whose arrow had pierced him was a child and pardoned him. It's been long enough that I don't remember if the purse was mentioned, but it was used as an example of Richard's character. It was a college history class. 8th grade I recall covering his participation in the Crusades and the ransom, but not detail of his death. 11th grade I took world history and it was very brief with few anecdotes. College was when I got to take a wider array of history classes for my electives and get more detail. It's possible the teacher didn't know what happened to the boy, or he didn't deem it relevant to the point he was making about Richard. It definitely wasn't sheltering us, though. It was after covering the problem of Richard's absenteeism.

The boy's name is Pierre Basile (died 6 April 1199), also named Bertran de Gourdon and John Sabroz "Peter Basili" or "Pierre Basile" is not believed to be his real name, since it variates with the names "John Sabroz" and "Bertran de Gourdon" as the name of Richard's killer. In truth, it is considered unlikely that contemporary chroniclers knew his real name.

I've read several accounts of this and none of them mentioned a kid deflecting crossbow bolts with a frying pan, also Richard didn't come to watch he was leading an attack on the Castle which he as King technically wasn't supposed to do and was shot in the throat. He subsequently died several days later but not before pardoning the kid who shot him in the throat. The kid was then yes supposedly flayed alive against Richards last dying wish.

Absent king, more like. The cost of his ransom alone, not to mention his crusades, near bankrupted England. But personally wise? Yeah, good dude. The very soul of chivalry.

The soldiers were ordered to do so on the behest of Eleanor of Aquitane, or at least they did so because she was bereft with bereavement

Why is everyone saying “Richard was a bad king.” Have y’all not read history? Yes, Richard was famous for not liking the English main land. However he did participate and govern it personally, he didn’t avoid England indefinitely, he avoided England periodically. When he wasn’t fighting wars, he actually governed himself.
