He just throws off this brilliant version, with that guitar, like it's frigging nothing. Genius.

It’s almost hilarious that RT can just casually step into playing Hendrix or Clapton and nail it, while still playing in his own inimitable style. Doesn’t hurt that he’s joined by such excellent players and powerful players when a song calls for it.

He totally nailed it. Superb performance of the classic.

This song was the death of so many mid to late 60's West Coast bands, esp after Hendrix killed it. If you don't think so listen to the Byrds version. Even Love, basically playing in the Leaves' footsteps was only a B to B-. But RT just kills it. One of the great Strat men of all time.

Ironically, back in early 90' front row at the Newport, RT's acoustic began to feed back and I jokingly yelled, Hendrix!", too which he shot me a look of disdain. He might have missed the joke but at least I was felt special to be acknowleged by my hero. Later in the show when Mr. Kirtpatrick seemed to take an unexpected extra chorus in yet another "outside" accordion solo he looked right at me right at me an half rolled his eyes a if we were the only 2 in on another joke. That was cool.

SuperBuzz71++ That WAS cool, the eye roll, just between you two. That would be about the coolest sort of communion between solitary self and one of the art heroes of our live.

@@AndrewStuartBrown I did the same with "Freebird" - same look

Who sounds like those solos? He's still RT even though he can do anything. I asked him once about using more Wahwah in his own songs, after watching the "White Room" cover. His answer was perfect --"all of those sounds have already been made." And for this we can be happy, as we have an utterly original musical master -- no one can make his sounds because they are his.

And he did it with 12 watts, there by saving electricity and putting off environmental destruction!

I didn't think that anyone could ever do a decent cover of it but I'm sure Jimi would have approved!

Hendrix did a decent cover of it, but not the best... far from it.

Very very strong performance! I've seen him 3 times but this may top even those mighty performances.

Saw Richard with Fairport in '68 at LSE Suddenly in presence of genius -it sets your own sails. Still feel 'Henry' the most interesting set of music ever put together, and 'Racehorse' eats up something of Kirsty Young on that island. My wife disagrees on both counts but, well, the world is a wonderful place.
@honeychurchgipsy66 жыл бұрын
Racehorse is a wonderful song I agree - he has done it a few times recently (by which I mean I've found it here on YT in concerts from the past 10 years - LOL!)

RT seems very proud that Henry sold so little. I was also one of the few. Great album, great songs. Check out the liner notes, too, if you ever get to see a copy.

I just discovered Richard Thompson as of late and I love his eclectic musical performances/songwriting. (Is that guy on bass the same dude as who plays with the 'Unknown Hinson' comedic vampire troubador who likes "party liquor' but disdains 'Rawk' music!?)

Has Richard Thompson got steel finger tips? I've heard a lot of amateur guitarists have thrown their guitars away after hearing Richard play!

Robin Lings Anyone who quits playing just because they hear someone great is missing the whole point of playing music

I don't think Thompson ever said he did on the 1000 years songs album he put it dow tho Bill Roberts. Last time I saw him do it in Dublin he also said that all if any royalties to go to Josey Valenti . Let's jut t] say he did a great version of the Jimmy Hendrix verson of Hey Joe. That all being said I personally much prefer the more traditional versions of the song but to each there own they are all grewat

I haven't heard RT play any Hendrix before but I suppose if he'll do a cover of Britney Spears then ANYTHING'S on the agenda eh...
