Just like Grimauldus was sent to Helsreach instead of the front lines, Jurisian was sent to the Hemlock by Grimauldus himself. At that moment he had finaly come at peace with the fact that his sending to defend Helsreach was the wariors fate that was ordained upon him and he was ready to accept it as the one that defines his life as a warior. I have to say that the way the Orks were written in this was masterful. They never say a word in their silly cocknee talk, and we never take a moment to see the war from their perspective. Because to the 40k fanbase, the Orks come off as a silly amusing race of maniacs. But could you imagine having to fight them? They are monsters in the truest sense. They take pleasure in war and nothing else because they are made for war and nothing else. Eldar, Necron, Tau, Human, Chaos- whatever they do they do it because they want to do it, however influenced by outside forces. The Greenskin? they only do what they were made to do.

I started playing 40k tabletop when I was 15. It was never more than a game for me until my dad let me read his copy of Horus Rising, the first novel in the Horus Heresy Series. Although the 40k community has its quirks, the lore written by ADB, Dan Abnett, Graham McNeil and so many others is, in my opinion, what sets 40k high and above any other fandom I’m a part of. These stories were a part of my childhood and it’s honestly been such an eye opening experience. You don’t need to like Sci-Fi to like this story, you don’t need to be a military film enthusiast to connect with these characters. These stories are so human to me, and they have so much more to them than to just be an add-on to the game like other game novels. They have something to say, they have emotions and lessons they wish to express. Sorry to make an essay. TLDR: Reading is fun for everyone, no seriously do it.

I prefer the interpretation of the general mood of the final, heart-wrenching last stand within the temple in the Helsreach fan-made movie than the novel. In the novel, in true Templar fashion, there's almost a sort of insane levity, what with Artarion laughing his final words and Grimaldus echoing that. I can see why people would approve of either interpretation, but I prefer the movie's. The tone is far more somber and heart-breaking, as it should be, I think. The Black Templars are known for the incredible zealotry that most rears its head in moments that would make most consider a retreat. Their attrition rates are atrociously high. Dying gloriously on the field of battle, against overwhelming odds is seen as the highest honor...as it should be. I feel sometimes it's portrayed with almost too much levity, though. The Helsreach movie did it right; it showed us something far more somber. It showed us that even amongst warriors who see a violent death as an inevitability, who feel no fear, who seek to burn twice as brightly still experience the pain of loss...and it is crushing. Not only that, the deaths of squad Grimaldus all showed their true, beautiful and terribly honest, colors at the end. Nero, a competent apothecary and warrior no doubt, was far more prone to outbursts of emotion, especially grief. Amongst Templars, one might call him soft...I think he was simply the most human. Within meek, gentle Nerovar beat the heart of defiance; as he was hoisted onto a spear by his midriff, he pulled himself down lower upon the spear whilst still being impaled...and for what purpose? So that, in a final act of defiance and raw courage, he could stab his killer and take him down with him. In his final moments, we see gentle Nero shine brighter than all as a true warrior. Priamus was young, proud, haughty, and immensely talented. Quick to anger, quick to misinterpret. Proud to a fault, he refused to show weakness; arrogance was his default trait, though it did not come from a place of malice. In his final moments, the overwhelming pain of missing a limb, amongst a myriad of other injuries, finally showed in his voice. It was heart-wrenching. "They're bringing the temple down!" is said with such desperation, yet he continues to fight. The implacable pain of witnessing the brutalizing of his battle-brother Nerovar and the futility of trying to save him is palpable in his delivery when he cries "Nero!" Not least though, is when Priamus, finally succumbing to fatigue, takes a blow across his face and falls to his knees. In his final moments, proud and boastful Priamus looks towards his brother-chaplain and says "Grimaldus...brother." with such pain, the rest of the scene I watched through blurred vision. In his final moments, despite being a zealous Templar, despite knowing he would die violently, despite a lifetime of battle, despite knowing that his death in glorious battle would earn him a place beside the Emperor of mankind...he wished only for the comfort and presence of one of his brothers. He didn't want to die alone. Artarion...dependable, sturdy Artarion. I don't have nearly as much to say, but it doesn't soften the blow any less. Banner bearer of Squad Grimaldus. Stalwart. Gruff. A pillar of strength, to be sure. In his final moment, before decapitation, he looked towards his brother, Grimaldus, and somberly said goodbye. He was going towards the Emperor's light, he was saved...his honor and his memory intact. He was to die a warrior's glorious death against impossible odds; this is akin to the holy grail, practically, for Black Templars. Yet, still, in his final moments, he laments having to be separated in life from his brother. The sheer weight of loss sets itself upon him so solidly, he cannot hide it when he says "Goodbye, brother." Perhaps he knew. Perhaps he knew that he alone would die and Grimaldus would live. Maybe his deep, audible pain was in knowing, in feeling that somehow Grimaldus would live. That wherever Artarion was going now, in the afterlife, Grimaldus will not follow...not for an agonizingly long time. And so he grieved because he would miss his brother, simply put, and Grimaldus would miss him. How soberingly human. Were I Grimaldus, I don't think I would have wanted to survive, either. The pain of living through that may very well dwarf whatever temporary pain he would have felt from death. The Hero of Helsreach...as if there was only one.

I disagree in the notion that the mood should’ve been depressing. To me the worst thing you can to death, is to laugh in his face. To enjoy the finial moments of your life before the end, Mexicans got it right with their day of the dead. Where regular men, would howel with angst and grief these men would stay their last with utter laughter. Truly in this way they died gloriously, a fate that Grimaldus craved. But that was the tragedy of Grimaldus, in the beginning, he wanted only glory, instead he was only given honors. He grew resentful of it all, but in the end he knew that glory only belongs to the dead. The living must have honor. A lesson that has been learned with a grim price. If you can’t tell I FUCKING LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH!!

So I guess the message of the ending is at least partly the unpredictability of war. Grimaldus and Andre were the two characters with the most death flags, yet they were the only characters to survive. Grimaldus literally stated he would die on this planet and acted as if he would die, and yet he was the only astartes to live. Andre also had many death flags. He was the comic relief in a franchise like Warhammer, and he sent a note to his love believing he would surely die. And in a surprising twist she (assumedly) died instead and Andre lived. Primus is another example. He was built up as a rising champion and most people who hadn’t read the book probably thought he would survive and apply all that he learned to future missions, due to him having the largest character development of the secondary cast. Yet he dies, and not even in an individual blaze of glory. He dies during the same montage as all the other characters, and from being burned to death, dying with no more fanfare than any of his brothers. And I feel like this is why I love the story: it’s true of war. Despite the science fantasy themes and the over the top action, at its core the story feels like an actual war story where the outcome is unexpected by everyone, chaos reigns, and there’s both plenty of dramatic moments and plenty more anti climatic moments.

In the book, Stormherald's last survivor holds his ground in the cockpit of Stormherald with nothing, but a laspistol, keeping the Orks away from Zarha's body until his last breath. Helsreach is such a fantastic book to show 40K for what it is. A meat-grinder. People go in one end, meat comes out of the other. However, it also exemplifies the heroism of those who willingly go into that meat grinder, knowing how it will end. It's just fantastic.

Years ago, when the Helsreach novel was first released, a good friend of mine organised a narrative campaign of Helsreach in our 40k gaming group. I played the Black Templars using Grimaldus and a special command squad as the core of my army. Another friend in the group played the Orks. The Imperial Guard and Sisters of Battle were also played by others in the campaign. We played all the major battles mentioned in the Helsreach novel. The campaign lasted about a month or so, mostly on weekends. It was a blast. Despite the daunting number of Orks my Black Templars were facing, somehow Grimaldus managed to stay alive to the end of the campaign just like in the novel. It was truly a campaign to remember.

@@enginepy it wasn't a speech really. The book this is based on playes differently. The imperials fought in a constant fighting withdrawal into the cathedral place until they where forced to retreat into the building itself. During the entire time they fought barely anybody had noticed their surroundings until the sister superior shouted her lines because at that point they had been driven back into the inner sanctum. Her call "woke" most of them out of their battle trance which made a many few humans panic and some even to try to run away. Grimaldus responded to this with his speech to give the soldiers around him moral and resolve. This worked only somewhat so he charged the nearest biggest ork and yelled his final speech that was being both broadcasted by his helmet as well as to everyone's com-unit around him. This led to all the remaining black temples chant their battle cry with the humans. This actually has even more deeper meaning than most realize, because in this last moment before the end, the black templars accepted the human soldiers into their fraternity and regarded them as equals in battle. Meaning the dead humans , their names, history and deeds, is now part of the black templars, and by extend the imperial fist as a whole, history

Richard Boylan is using the audiobook as his base, which limits him quite a bit. There is a *lot* that is left out, including development of other characters that simply make cameo appearances here or characters that don't appear at all in the audiobook. Simple example, the ending scene in the book is of Grimaldus returning to Helsreach with the three great relics of Helsreach he personally pulled from the temple with him as he dug himself out of the pile of rubble. A lot more going on with three custom built servitors carrying them to be offered back to the people. Another would be when Jurisian (the Master of the Forge) confronts the Titans as they are leaving Helsreach and negotiates with them. This results in one of the secondary Titans taking on Godbreaker (the Ork Titan) and going down hard to give Oberon the shot to kill it, which pretty much was what broke the back of the Ork invasion of the city. However, the main storyline is left intact and the main thing in the novel is the growth of Grimaldus from a squad leader with potential into one of the leaders of the Black Templars.

@@LobstersLobsters Yes, a one man team is a limit on the technical side. I'm referencing the editing he used to cut out certain scenes and not develop other characters. Lack of voice actors forced him to use the audiobook, which is the limit I'm referring to. Apparently the audiobook itself paraphrases the original written book. IMO, a silly decision since the prose in the book is sparse as it is. By all other standards, it is a great job and I love it.

Lots and lots of scenes missing. Nothing that interrupts the flow or misses big points, but lots of little flavor things. Pretty much about what you see in any conversion from prose to audio or visual. The other answer would be that the animation is edited down since if the audiobook is complete and unabridged, then this wonderful series has a great editing job to cut out all those scenes.

Honestly one of the smallest yet most impactful parts. I really don’t understand how relationships could possibly blossom in the 40k universe. But for it to do so, to seem so genuine, and then be dead. It is devastating.

the ork's titans really come with a bulky force and menace here. You feel their weight and deadly firepower. Even in great artworks they often cannot transmit being a real danger to imperial forces because they look like crude rubbish bolted together, almost cartoonish. But here, perfect.

It's scarier when it has motion to it because of how reality defying it's being is. It is a construct held together and made to function by nothing but the immense will of the orks to destroy. As a still image it is just a pile with no will or presence to it.
@LM-xw7ii3 жыл бұрын
For sure. They're nowhere near as deliberately designed as the Imperial Titans, but they have way more guns; way more armor. And worst of all? No matter how badly you wreck one of them, any Ork mek with enough time on his hands can get it working again.

I like how Primus goes from only caring about his glory to shouting in pain at seeing Nero die (when previously he taunted him about the way Cador died). It shows how much Bayard's death(and the battle in general) shook him. Also his reaction to Bastilan dying so suddenly was animated very well.

Evocative work. I am also a veteran (OEF/OIF). As an officer, let me say your visuals expressed the strain of command. My words fail to express all I want to say, so let me say this much... All leaders wear masks for their troops. All troops fight for their comrades. If you are a hero, it is not a title you take(or want) for yourself. Our awards are worn for those who fell... To honor them as we press on. To all my fellow veterans, GET THE HELP YOU NEED! I tried all the stupid mind games we play. It nearly killed me. So talk to someone, go to the VA, find others who can understand enough to point you in the right direction, look up you local DAV chapter... Get off your (edited for the public) posterior and do something. We are stronger together Brothers. No matter your race, creed, sex, gender, nationality, or breed (K-9s too)...you are my Brothers. Take my advice, not all wounds leave scars on the outside. I've finally gotten my PTSD to a manageable state, but it took time and a team to shift the engagement in my favor. Too many of us die because we don't get the help we need. So all I can say is this last plea. Live a life that honors the fallen. Carry on.

I was also introduced to 40k through Dawn of war. The Marine dying and planting the flag really resonated with me. The devotion, the valor.... I found Dawn of war when I got out of basic and was on leave, my friend had a copy. I'm so very glad GW has finally hired someone like Richard who really seems to get what draws people to 40k and isn't just trying to sell the franchise.
