Outstanding info Richard. The smaller shank size of a #8 hook is less stress on the bait as well as just piercing the upper part of its mouth to let it 'breathe' easier while hooked. Also lengthening the line length from the split shot to the hook lets the shad swim more freely, which drives the crappie crazy.

The rain reminds me of a time I was fishing on a dock at Monroe Lake in Indiana. The rain started, but I was catching some nice crappie. I went up to a shelter to wait out the rain. It didn't want to let up. So I remembered I had an umbrella in my truck, so I went and fetched it out...headed back to the dock, cast with my right hand. I held the umbrella under my left arm, held my rod and reel with my left hand, and reeled with my right. I kept catching fish in the rain. Hillarious to my friend who stayed at the shelter. Nice video to stir up some memories.

You don't realize how loud thunder is until you get caught out on a lake in a storm. Stayed out to long a few years back. Thought I had time to make it back, but a finger of the storm crossed the lake in between me and the boat ramp. Lightning was hitting the hillsides all around me. I had my ear pushed down against one shoulder and one hand on my other ear trying to drive the boat with my free hand. It was like I was in a war zone with bombs landing around me. The wind was so bad at the ramp the boat loaded onto the trailer half sideways leaning to one side, but I was just glad to still be alive to fish another day.

Hello Mr. Gene. Thank you very much for the videos. I got into crappie fishing after watching your videos. I fish for nothing but crappie. I live in California central cost and the lake I fish has no bridge columns nor docks. Live bait is not readily available either, so I solely have to use plastic jigs (Bobby Garland, crappie magnet, slab tail) . I fish from a kayak. I just bought a fish finder but I haven't figured out how to set it up so that I could see the fish. It has been very hot here lately (over 100 degrees) and the surface water temp is about (80 degrees). I couldn't catch anything for weeks now. I feel totally defeated. How do I look for crappie in our "featureless lake" during such hot summer days? How should I present the bait and how deep should I target? Thank you very much for your advise and kindness. God bless!
