Yeah I have seen that particular video and it is very useful and has helped immensely. the problem I'm having is polishing and getting rid of small scratches.

Have you used varying grades of sandpaper and then polished the nocks with a `car rubbing compound` such as T-Cut?

+Richard Head Longbows Yeah I have. I've tried using sand paper to steel wool but I'm still getting small scratches, then I use a polishing mop in a drill and t-cut. maybe I just need more patience and practice. lol

My question is, how do you make a prope cone shaped HOLE in the horn? I may imagine the answer to this question is simple, but i haven't yet found a video on YT of someone making it. All the vids are presented with horn nocks with a fit/holes drilled. My second question is; Should i be affraid of the "cone" end of the bow is too thin? I mean it is VERY thin, and simple man may think, this will break, especially on a high poundage bows. Third question is; Where do i put a string groove? Do i drill it above the end of the "coned" arm? Or can i drill it somewhere between 1/2 of an inch above the horn base? Wich definitely might drill to the wood? Sorry for the third question, my english isn'y very good, as i was trying to describe what i had in mind.
@suedavehart8 жыл бұрын
to drill the hole in the horn use a regular style small drill bit 2/3mm, then grind a flat auger bit into a isosceles triangle, use the guide hole to ensure you stay central, will need lots of ventilation -horn stinks when worked hard. This will give you your cone shaped hole. Next drill a very small hole in the back of the horn nock (belly side) this will help prevent pneumatic lock and prevent air bubbles stopping the nock fitting all the way down. Glue will be forced out of the relief hole when nock is snuggly fitted, hope this helps

also if someone could answer this id be grateful. I have a you finish longbow from ringing rocks archery and would like to install horn nocks onto it. it already has nocks cut into the ends of the bow right into the wood, could i just file it down like in the video and put horn nocks in place of the self nocks?

Always ask the person who made the bow before attempting anything.
Is araldite epoxy ok ? I've seen comments of people using super glue gel. I've been scratching away at my bow on and off for months now ; And has a draw weight of 160 lbs . I'd hate for it to fall apart on me.
@longbows6 жыл бұрын
Hi, we use Araldite on our bows, but, as the video shows, you still need to fit the nocks well.
@taylorp.28725 жыл бұрын
what type of horn do you use and how do you get the perfectly conical hole?
@longbows5 жыл бұрын
Hi, we use Buffalo horn. To make the cone we use a drill bit with a elongated triangular head.

If one has a chased and continuous ring on the back of the bow, is there something one needs to consider when fitting a horn nock?
@longbows2 жыл бұрын
Just because you have 'chased a ring' doesn't mean the bow is tillered correctly! But, no, I wouldn't worry to much about the nocks, in my videos you will see I leave the tips of a bow stiff before adding nocks to allow for any reduction when reducing wood to fit them. If you haven't followed this method you may end up with whippy tips.
@gushlergushler2 жыл бұрын
@@longbows I did not mean to imply that it means a good tiller. As far as I understand on self bows a continous ring on the back is better, but I have yet to actually tiller the bow. Thank you very much, that is helpful to me.
@longbows2 жыл бұрын
OK, in which case following my videos on tillering will help, leaving the tips a little stiff before adding the nocks will help, that is if you do most of the tillering prior to adding nocks. It really does depend what order you do things in. This is why I mentioned the bow being tillered, it was me that assumed you meant it was tillered, no worries.
@gushlergushler2 жыл бұрын
@@longbows I shall watch them. It was my plan to add the horn nocks after floor tillering but before adding the stave to the tillering tree. The target drawweight is 90 at 31 with an ash stave. At any rate, I will see that I preserve the back ring as fully as possible while having the nock centered as closely to the back as possible. That should give me enough wiggle room I suppose

Hey Phil, a quick question as I’m about to fit some horn on an Ash self bow. On a self bow should I be conscious about breaking the very back growth layer while coning down to fit the nock? I’ve seen your video where you mention encasing every lamination on said bows, and I wonder if I’m meant to stick to the same method. I’m worried that breaking through near the tips would cause a weak spot. Thanks in advance.

In short we don't know, Medieval glues in the bowmaking world are a bit of a mystery, bluebell bulb glue and other animal type glues were used in the medieval period, your guess is as good as ours.

Do nocks improve the function or durability of the bow? I realize they are historically accurate, but why bother if they didn't search a purpose?
@longbows9 жыл бұрын
Adam Whitlach Hi, yes, they improve the durability of the bow, horn is much less likely to ware/brake. When you own/use a Longbow you will soon notice how much you accidentally bash the end of the bow.
@Oldworldarchery9 жыл бұрын
+Richard Head Longbows Yea, but for that reason (if your bumping your nock on everything,...which sometimes I am guilty of.. and man don't get me started on ceiling fans!), you would think a simple self nock would be more durable. But with regards to wear from the string I would agreed horn nocks are better. And don't get me wrong, I always use horn nocks on my ELBs, just the victorian style nocks we make nowadays probably aren't the most durable if your bumping em on concrete and stuff I would figure. Cool video, I am lazy and always wait to shape the nock until I glue the horn on (and use the bandsaw to cut the bulk of horn away, and the belt sander to do most of the basic shaping, I finish up with rasps, scraper, sandpaper (high grit), than buffing wheel.
