Gotta say, as someone who has built 440's for 50+ years, you UNDERSTATED the potential of this factory motor by a country mile. Superior rod ratio's, skirted block, shafted rocker train, widest lifters in the industry, improved casting bulk heads and main webs; this engine with the factory forged crank (standard thru 1972, but appears cast based on damper) will handle 800hp NO PROBLEM. BUT, you did the right thing holding in the 500hp range with cast crank.

Dang, its amazing to see what 5 to 7 lbs of boost did to a tired old 440. That thing LOVES boost. I'd rebuild this tired engine and give it a complete refresh, then I'd add on the turbo kit you made and install it in my '71 Demon. I'd run it at 7 to 8 lbs of boost. With around 600hp and over 650 lbs-ft of grunt, it would be a street demon for sure. At that power level, the 440 would be so under-stressed it would last forever. Kick ass!

With the size of the harmonic balancer so big, it looks like a cast crank. Factory Chrysler pistons usually are pretty heavy/beefy and would seem to take and dispurse a load of heat and handle the pressure of a long incline/grade. It stood-up to Richard's boost, albeit moderate as it was, 650 ft lbs of torque is rather significant. Not sure if sufficient ring gap is on those pistons, but I would be interested in a 15 or 20 minute run at the 600-650 torque level. Now THAT would be an excellent test of the rotating assembly on a Raised Block Mopar! I pray Richard keeps Big Block Mopar engines in mind for future tests and upgrades.

Stock heads are fine. 906/915s flow good when modded with bigger valves and a port job however the cost of labor isn't worth it anymore with cheap aluminum heads with every mod already in them - that and the weight saving lol. In fact Steve Dulcich wrote a series of articles on the 1970s iron heads where he forensically tested and compared them to the 906/915 heads of the 1960s and found the so called 'smog' heads of the 1970s were actually better for flow. Admittedly he didn't test the motorhome heads but I think the only difference was the tapered plug heads, so correctly or incorrectly I reason?? they are probably pretty good for flow like the rest of the 70s heads. Here you go. Dispelling the myth of poor flow BB Mopar heads of the 1970s. I think that the engine has the pistons set in the hole slightly which is bad for combustion efficiency. Id low buck it with some heavy cast pistons and good rings to achieve a zero height to the deck, maybe some rod bolts, definitely studs top to bottom, then run alcohol through it.

@@hoost3056 Not slightly down - mid-late 70s 440s have pistons around .150" down, you're not going to find a cheap tall piston to make up for that. A 3.90 stroke crank would be near-perfect for a zero-deck engine, but those aren't available anymore, and if they were they'd be for BB Chevy rods - which spoils the low-buck aspect. Thanks for the video. Gives me an idea of where I can go with my 440 rv. I have plans to run a turbo, but not after heads, intake at minimum. I would worry about running an iron head with turbo for an RV because of hot spots that already are an issue for long hill climbs. Crank, rods, pistons likely will get swapped same time I get around to a turbo. After a few road trips, the weak link for the RV is how poorly the stock truck 440 pulls up grades. Regularly would end up climbing a long steep grade at ~28 mph because stock torque production does not carry well with RPM(bad stock intake, heads, and exhaust conspire to kill power).

All stock internals and 9.1:1 compression. except 1.65 roller rockers and studded head bolts. 24lbs injectors with adj boost reference fuel regulator. And stock computer. At this time it would eat a then new Zo6 with 405HP all the way through 125mph which was the factory speed limiter.. I never knew how much power it made. But always assumed somewhere in the neighborhood of 450hp-520hp at the wheels at roughly 17psi based on way it's pulled away from the Vette.. So a Magnum 5.2l 318 with mirrored upgrades should produce fracturely higher results based on the the 2 extra cylinders of equal displacement...
