Great Video Richard! Nice to see a section on more of a daily/ tow setup. Most people always want to see the high HP numbers, but some of us like to see the performance down low where it would be used in daily use.

They are underrated. Most of us can have plenty of fun with a sub 6000 rpm build made with torque in mind. The old Isky 264 mega cam remains one of my favorites for general purpose fun. Given the tech of the day, how he got so good so fast at his craft still amazes me.

That Qaudrajet will perform just as well as the Demon. Most people don't know how to tune a Qaudrajet. I've used the Qaudrajet for years. Some drag race series will even require the Qaudrajet. The Demon is a great carburetor also. I've had both and prefer the Qaudrajet just to be different. It would be nice to see a comparison of the 2 carbs by someone that knows how to tune the Qaudrajet. Cheers Richard Richard thanks for the great videos brother

I’ve got qjets on two of my cars. One has a 240 degree 560 lift at 050 cam and full cnc heads. It honestly wasn’t that hard to get the qjet running right on it just took some reading, Cliff ruggles qjet book helped out a lot. Holleys are fine I’ve had some before but the tuning parts are so expensive and they don’t feel as good driving as the qjet.

That last portion of the test where you switched the intake makes me happy with what I did with my combo. A heavy truck needs that extra torque when launching into a mud pit.

Sbc is the base but not an LS engine. Ls engine has all the new technology taken form the mistakes from the early days. Ls are more efficient but aftermarket has now helped the sbc make as mush power. You would never see Roller cams on early sbc and now aftermarket stepped up making the sbc more efficient. Yes ls is a sbc but it’s nothing like the 1 generation sbc. I would definitely build a sbc before doing a swap thanks to this video

@danmyers9372

That’s pretty big HP for 406 if it is truly a street engine with pump gas compression and a hydraulic cam. Unless of course your engine has high compression and a could cam which make it more of a race engine vs a street/strip engine.

Fabulous. My brother had an old, rusty, 1970 Monte Carlo with a 4bolt 350 2bbl. It said 245hp on the air cleaner - virtually the same as in the video. We put the engine in an old Chevy dually and added a 4bbl and manifold form a junk yard. No other mods - no headers, no cam, etc. We always wondered how much power we gained. It appears that we probably made another 25-30hp. It made that old truck come alive with a full load of oak. I enjoyed this video - the video didn't say but i assume it was working with a 4 bolt block

Baselining with the old heads made the following mods more impressive, but my first change would be vortec heads and a compatible manifold. No complaints with your progression, just moving to modern combustion chambers and ports is what makes sense to me. Looking back at the DZ engine, they kept some mid-range by using a dual plane manifold on a 7000 rpm engine. Looking at how airflow works, it seems to me the active cylinder only sees half the carb on a dual plane, thus could always use a BIGGER carb than a single plane, at least with the same cam/heads. Getting to 520-540 hp range with a 350 is serious stuff, especially the dual plane setup with little to no torque loss. Incredible stuff in this video, thanks Richard!

As I remember as a good combo was long tube headers with 3" collectors, ported and polished 202 high compression heads, Mantly 12.5:1 compression pistons with a Offenhouser 360 degree dual port high rise square bore aluminum intake manifold and a 780 dual feed double pumper carb and a Crane mechanical "phase 3 cam" with springs and screw in studs. Then a nitous shot of whatever your engine bottom end could handle. It made great power and it didnt break the bank. Drop that in a Chevy Vega or a Chevy Monza and go have some fun trying to get i tto hook up. No Idea what the HP or torque rating was but braggards were saying things like 800 hp and other just as unbelievable numbers but they were serious tire burners and I've seen at least one in the very low 11 sec range playing with the possibility of breaking into the 10's. I remember the anouncer at Cecil county drag strip anouncing him and saying "He's tickling 10's. Can he do it!" Which made me laugh. That's probably why I remember it so vividly. There was at least one guy in hotrod magazine that boasted a 69 camero with an NA small block running 9's I never saw it happen but I assume someone did otherwise it wouldn't have made it into the magizine. Back in the day those were some serious numbers. Perhaps not so much today with turbo charging and computers but back then that was big stuff.

And if I just is the same parts I will get close to the same power which is awesome for that I thank you. My first car I Hot Rodded was my 67 Galaxie 500 2 door fast back I put a 390GT camshaft a 428 Police Interceptor Intake with a 800 QJet carb. Car went from a top speed of 130 to a top speed of 150! Richard, I would like to see a test using a single plane intake on a mild SBC combo. I'm running multiport EFI on my SBC but dual plane EFI intakes aren't really out there for a 4150 style throttle body. I know my combo is severely mismatched now with the single plane RHS EFI manifold as it seemed to run a lot stronger back with a carb and a Performer RPM. Keep up the great work!
@zAvAvAz
@zAvAvAz 3 жыл бұрын
i would like to see a performer RPM quadrajet against an EPS intake versus these on the stock or mild combo. and lets talk about the 270S-6 comp cams lift limited cam with a 4 and 7 swap with AFR195 competition heads and 10.5:1 with custom long runner intake. and make it a 376 SBC, i have the pre blueprint for ya. oh and make it with a stock deck hieght 9.025" but offset grind nodular iron crank to get pistons at top deck level. then get the solid roller version of the cam with the same timing events to max area ! Then raise the rocker ratio. now drive it in a camaro street car , test and tune and use a TH350 with whatever stall that works but only use 3.42 , 3.23, 3.73 gears and drive it around on highway type roads and merging on interstate, drag strip 1/4 , carve a slalom track = and evaluate, is it worth the cam and custom cross long tube intake (fits under hood mostly or without) or just use a performer rpm and comp hyd roller?

I think someone had the best idea for a hot street small block for about any make Just aim for 10-10.5:1 compression and 2 cfm per hp with aluminum heads and it should be very fun on the street with a 3000 or so stall. Nothing exotic and its more than plenty for most people As far as mild combos go, An 882 head is def a boat anchor unless you try to shave it. Horsepower monster I believe did that and still couldnt make past 380 with porting and bowl work screw in stud conversion. I had them on a 305..big. Mistake lol Id just get the dart vortects at that point. All the great vortec atuff with theout the spring limits. And screw in studs

@Taylor Rutter yeah back 20 yrs ago when I did the 305 I wish I did that. What I really should have done was ditch the 305 and had gotten a 350 like people had said. Oh well now I have a 302 looking to go 347 ford because its easier to make more compression with a longer stroke and if I do a Chevy again it will also be a stroker

Also remember that the vortec heads have press in head studs and screw in studs are needed for most aftermarket cams and can be installed by any machine shop also I would of liked to see the big afr heads with the rv cam that way we can see what can be had with a great set of heads and a small cam many people think that to much head is a bad thing but in my experience it’s nice to have a car that drives and idles great in all conditions even with ac on and have the heads carry the cam higher up higher in the rpm and have the cam do the work down low please do a test showing a small cam with awesome heads to show no loss down low and nothing but gains it not make as much peak but no losses thru the rpm range in a street car that is super smooth and see if the loss wouldn’t be much down low also what was the wild cam specs i don’t think you let us know and I think it’s a good idea to let everyone know that many times vortec heads are cracked at the junk yard be very careful preferably get them from summit or jegs

So a well built sbc makes as much power as an ls engine. It’s cheaper to build a sbc as well. That sbc made about 100 more than the stock ls3 and would cost fraction of the price. You can probably stroke it to 383 and get it to 600 hp range. Nice little setup and looks like the wild version will work for street use

James Williams lq9 are pricy here in LA CA. Ly6 would be the better option but those are hard to get here and so is the lq9z you’re still spending money to get it done. About 2k once you upgrade the cams and upgrade intake and injectors to fit a car application. Ls is still more expensive for the same amount of power not to mention a freshly built 383 vs a beat to hell ls engine that might need a rebuild sooner than later

I know this is a year old, but the prices for a cheap/inexpensive head and a set of vortec are pretty minimal now. Assuming you pick a set of Vortec up for $100 and send it out for servicing (if needed), manifluxed, and cleaned your already $200 - 300 into the heads. Then add in new springs, even doing it yourself, another $100-150 your at around $500 - $600 and that a hope and a prayer for quality check and reliability. I haven't actually been able to hit that price as at least one exhaust guide is jacked and most valves (at this point do them all) need resurfacing etc. My point is the cheap speedway, FloTec and/or AFR's end up being about $50 more when it's all said and done. For longevity I tend to lean towards the AFR as casts myself, but most people aren't going to put 100k miles on a motor putting out decent numbers: IE Not a daily driver, most of those daily drivers are LS swapped for power AND fuel milage. The first "mild" motor is a great truck/S10/2 bolt main combination with a set of the cheaper heads as mentioned along with used/cheaper intake. Meaning a great use of the TBI 350's you can literally get for $100-200 bucks right now. Less then a $1000 on a complete short block with cam: Polished Crank, rods checked and done up, pressed on new pistons, block bored and honed, block cleaned, block decked (if needed), cam bearings installed. Assuming you'll assemble the rest yourself. What really would be left is heads, any tin(s) you can't reuse, intake, HEI, and carb. Really should be less then $3k easy and SHOULD get you 80k in miles with 350ish HP and over 400 ft lbs in TQ, tuned right smoke most of the idiots out there with $10k dropped in an untuned but been dyno tuned crap.

Excellent job like the old school gen 1 sbc stuff. I still have good cores left. It would be interesting something like this on BBC IV 396 or 402. Or like my next project a 540 BBC with only 9:00 CR that will hopefully run on 87 octane.

Once again , thanks Richard for all you do in testing. My question is, I noticed this motor had a tci balancer on it. Are you seeing any gain in hp or just smoothness in the motor or even more valvetrain stability with this balancer. Elaborate a little if you can! Thanks. P.S. That dip at around 4,000 rpm is indicative of to wide a lobe separation. Tighten that sucker up to a 107 or a 106 and let er rip.

It would be interesting to see a "Chinese Power" test, where you used Chinesium garbage heads, intakes, rockers, carbs, etc etc. These parts lack any trustworthy data, but are really tempting to people on a budget! Reliable, trustworthy data from someone like you would help a lot of folks make sound power decisions on parts.

Hey again Richard, thanks for letting me know the brand of Dyno headers. Ok, in a nutshell, I keep evolving (changing) my 327 Sbc build as I dig deeper into the math/engineering of actually building an engine and understanding why things do what they do. Stock rods, cast pop-up pistons (3.2cc), 492 dh virgin heads rebuilt to 2.02/1.60, bronze valve guides, 11/32” stainless Fererra? Valves, bbc 7/16 studs and guide plates, not unshrouded yet, 8.44:1 dynamic comp, .015 steel head gaskets, Weiand 7508 single plane, comp cams 12-705-8 solid roller, lift .575, adv duration 300/300, @ .050 255/255 single pattern, comp ultra pro magnums…dyno programs tell me 377hp. What would be the biggest head upgrade (aluminum cnc ported head) that you would suggest to get the max hp and rpm’s without different rods and pistons to have a once in awhile Street car/show vehicle that spends the most time (maybe 200-300 miles a year) on a road course/drag strip. Thanks 🙏 Tony

@@richardholdener1727 thanks again for a reply Sir! Sooo, you’re telling me that my cam will not work well with the AFR heads? I’m confused on this one. If it’s not the right cam, why, and what do you suggest for maximum effort considering my short block internals limits. My engine guy and aftermarket performance business owner hasn’t warned me against this cam even after I mentioned wanting to upgrade to Brodix or AFR CNC heads. He’s already got my money but is always willing to let me trade parts if still in the box. Which they are. I know you have a million of us gear heads asking questions so I understand if you don’t get back to me. I’m just honored to get help from someone with your knowledge! Another great vid mate,, Given that the first test was 2 barrel and a basic shitter, it really does go to prove that my thoughts that the specs quoted for the 89 L98 TPI Vette are ridiculously low. The full vid also adds weight to the advice i have been giving to others for 50 years,, That it is like baking a cake, the results depend on the recipe, putting 6 eggs instead of 2 doesnt meant it will be better, it all has to match up.. O yes that exhaust manifold has to be the worst flowing/port match I have ever seen, old Rams horns way batter. Eddie Australia C4

@@richardholdener1727 Richard I'm sad Holley isn't offering the Systemax heads anymore.. I always liked the 20 degree vs 23 deg arangement on those. I had the idea of Angle milling those 20 deg Holley's to see if I could reach 18 degrees (90's NASCAR) angle. Would love to see you try. Or even on a set of stock 20 deg SBF heads. 18 deg at low cost and no fancy valvetrain or manifold required. Angle milling normally picks up 15cfm on a 23 deg.

@SpaceMoviePopcorn
@SpaceMoviePopcorn 4 жыл бұрын
From my own experience, if you're going to run vortec heads, keep valve lift under .550 (they have to be overhauled to support anything over .450 lift) and stick to a dual plane rpm air gap. .525 lift max would be better. They're great heads but they definitely have limitations. 170cc (I believe that's what they have) intake runners will only go so far. Been almost 20 years since I had these heads on a motor so I may be off. But not too far off. Cheers

So I have an old 350 .030 over in my truck.. has a Melling WG1103 “blue racer” cam in it, 920 heads, performer RPM intake, flowtech shorties, full 3” duals.. MSD HEI, about 9.5:1 compression. Carb is an Edelbrock AVS2 650cfm. I have no idea what kind of power it makes… I have a pair of generic Vortec heads and an RPM air gap intake to put on it.. just wondering what kind of gains that’s worth. Every time I see a new SBC video I get excited hoping it’s a “what happens when you swap your 920 heads for junkyard vortec heads?” But I haven’t seen that… it’s usually.. “what happens when I replace the cam with a wicked roller and modded vortec heads?” Like.. no, I just want to know what a direct vortec head swap would be worth. Standard springs, 1.5 stamped rockers… right off the donor engine.
