Just a note to your subscibers, you don't need a wide LSA to make top end. As for torque, the 550 horse combo, made 500 ft lbs with a single plane intake, thats like trying to make torque with a wide LSA. Thanks Richard for showing that not all cam salesmen know everything is written in cement.

These days Chevy crate motors can be bought on the cheap compared to any other engine,of coarse a LS can make more power but the small block is king for power on a budget.

Yes the key is what rpm range are you operating. You can build a 450 HP SBC then add a roots or pro charger. Adjust the boost to your liking as long as the operating range of your camshaft along with the timing permits it. 5, 6, 7, hundred horse along with a good set of heads. Fun to watch Richard Keep Dyno testing.

Awesome vid! A while back you tested a 350/350hp Chevy small block that made over 350hp on your dyno. How about a manifold comparison of the stock Q-Jet cast iron manifold, an LT1 manifold and today`s Edelbrock RPM Air-Gap manifold on a 350/350hp spec engine to see how much hp the manifolds are worth? And then try all three manifolds with a 327/365 cam and then one of today`s Comp cams to show the bigger manifolds potential. I would love to see the results! Thanks for your hard work..

I have a production gm block in my camaro w/ billet splayed main caps and arp studs installed , scat forged crank , eagle H beam rods w/ arp bolt upgrade ,diamond pistons w/ tool steel pins . Brodix track 1 heads i hand ported and brodix single plane intake , holley 950 blow thru carb . 385”sbc w/F1R procharger , 11.75:1 compression spinning blower past max recomended speed . Car runs 8.6x @ 160mph at 3850lbs . Car is making over 1150 hp w/ a gen 1 sbc and has been together for over 10years now . Some street use , mostly track . Slowest it ever was was 9.50’s the first year out , been in mid-upper 8’s for last 4 yrs . Put about 4-500 miles on each year for last 4 years too . Tons of street pulls given people rides and even more passes at track . Been hard on it , but take care of it and paid attention to all the details during initial machining and assembly and it has treated me VERY well over the years and been extremely reliable . Freshened it up in 2016 , was built originally in 2005 , still alive and healthy today . When it did get freshened up , everything looked decent considering the years of abuse . Original build had srp pistons , big solid roller cam . 1 lifter started going bad and i caught it when i inspected my oil filter after a race . Had lifters rebuilt and replaced 2 of them , installed new pac valve springs , and custom diamond pistons w/ total seal ap rings and bumped up compression from 9:1 to 11.75:1 when freshened up in 2016 . Goes faster every season !

Thanks for the video Richard, I was wondering if you'd be able to make a video on how much boost you're able to run using 91 octane pump gas and straight water injection, I see everywhere about straight methanol or 50/50 or windshield washer fluid but never just pure distilled water. Im kinda curious because in the diesel world sometimes we run high 30% water injection to keep egt's down on our high power semi trucks, I'm curious as to how it would suppress detonation on a boosted gas engine, yes water isnt combustible but you figure with each pound of boost youre adding more fuel, i feel like mixing 15% or so water would suppress detonation up to any boost level youre able to run. It's a huge controversy online but there's absolutely no videos on max boost using straight water injection and how well it suppresses detonation

The SBC dyno run I would love to see is one with the Moser DOHC 32 valve conversion. It was developed by Richard Moser of Moser Engine Corp and Harvey Crane Jr. in the late 60's/early 70's. Tom McMullen had one in his second roadster and you can see it on the cover of the September 1976 Street Rodder. EDIT: August 1971 Hot Rod had a real good image of a Moser DOHC SBC on the cover

It has a Doug Nash 4+3 manual and a Dana 44 rear end I want to build a motor. Should I simply throw heads in a cam on this motor? Not sure how much torque I would lose. Do I build a 383 or do I build a 400 small block. I can pick up at fresh tested small block for about $1500. Not sure what to do.

@Anarchy-Is-Liberty
@Anarchy-Is-Liberty 3 жыл бұрын
You can easily make 600hp using a 2 bolt block, no problem. For your 400hp combo, you can use the stock crank and rods. I'd personally go with a set of forged pistons, but cast pistons will easily make 400hp no problem. If you ever plan any NOS, go with forged pistons and get the ring gap right. A set of Vortec heads or even old fuelie heads with a 3 angle valve job will again, easily make 400hp, nothing special needed. You can run a hydraulic or solid lifter camshaft, I'd look for something in the .480-.525 lift range, maybe a 230-240 duration @0.050 and an 110LSA. Flat top pistons, shoot for 10.25:1 compression so you can stay on pump gas. Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and a Holly 650 to 750 cfm carb should do it for you. Just look around, there are about 10,000 different little combos like this that will make you 400hp, using pretty much factory stock parts. Have fun.

If you haven't already, it would be great to see an "other guys" video on the 80's/90's TBI SBC. As you know these motors are notorious for being low power and terrible flowing. It would be nice to see what can actually be done with one of these as they are soo very common. They also have a good following, but no one has really proven what they can/can't do. Plenty of people are more than eager to say "you can do this/that and make a ton of power" As I said though, no one has shown it being done. Show us if these engines are just trash like most of us believe them to be, or can they be good? Can we actually make some power with the stock TBI? Can we actually use the junk heads that come on them? I think the 5.7 TBI was rated at 195hp, can we do some minor tweaks and get mid 200? Low 300? I believe these to be the true "budget" small block as no one really wants them so in turn they are plentiful and cheap!
@richardholdener1727
@richardholdener1727 4 жыл бұрын
the stock TBI does eventually limit power -with both fuel and air flow. the intake is not good-a simple 4-barrel induction adds 30+ hp. The rest of the motor is just SBC-meaning good with lots of potential (BTW-the stock ECU is also somewhat limiting in terms of processing speed)

Would love to see a comparison of SBC 383, a stroked LS383 and a 6.2 to see the impact variations in stroke & bore have on engines with the effectively the same displacement. In theory the stroked LS, being ever-so-slightly under-square should have a torque advantage whereas the SBC 383 & 6.2 being over-square should have the edge on horsepower. But I would love to see how it plays out in reality!

Quick question. For the 400 ci motor with the pro charger supercharger that created 800+ hp, what kind of intake did you guy use? Did BP provide the intake as well or was it something you guys had laying around and what’s the brand name of it. I’m trying to mock that exact setup. Separate from that setup have you used the weiand 177 supercharger before? If you have do you think it would produce the same amount of horses?

Not that I don't want to see him do gen2 LT1 stuff especially with all the advancements going on with them right now (aftermarket block) we need as much exposure as possible for the platform. But for the most part everything that works with a gen1 SBC works on a gen 2. The do like more compression it's not un heard of to run 13-1 on pump gas. And they like a more aggressive cam profile.

So at what point do the factory SBC blocks start giving up from power? 1500?
@opieg7333
@opieg7333 4 жыл бұрын
Depends mostly how far you bore out the cylinders while getting to 1,500 and partly on how you decide to get to 1,500. If you are taking a older take-out SBC or a newer casting the failure points will be vastly different depending on casting techniques. You could also treat or sleeve the block and change the theoretical failure point. And is the engine build designed to last several prolonged runs, or are we just looking for something to run for 7 or 8 seconds a few times? Durability on a factory SBC is sort of perception and choice. For my style, a newer pure factory block in most application makes me nervous around 650hp. Sure you could push it much further, but if you do, you have to keep a close eye on the internals.
