On past LS1 cam swaps I’ve done we used the dowel rod method to pin the lifters up after spinning the cam to push the lifters up. We obviously weren’t changing lifters so we weren’t pulling the heads and we didn’t want the lifters to fall especially on those high mileage motors. I was always on edge hoping the lifters wouldn’t fall being the cars were F-Body and didn’t want to drop the cradle to get the pan off.
@shadowopsairman1583 Жыл бұрын
Yeah i will be facing that on a swap to the Texas Speed Chopacabra in my LR4 (4.8L LS1 Iron Block). Really don't want to take the heads off at all as they have mls gaskets and im not replacing the lifters anyway

@@shadowopsairman1583 get a piece of dowel rod and cut it in half. You spin the cam to knock the lifters into the trays. Then slide the dowel rods in to keep them from falling down. I've been doing that with an $0.88 piece of dowel rod for over a decade. It works well and doesn't harm anything.

What freaking fantastic timing for this! We are literally just putting a 6.2 Denali back together that suffered from a failure even "with the dongle installed". It's terrifying how many of these trucks are out there even well cared for that have the ticking time bomb of AFM/DOD under the hood. Doing it outside the truck is certainly a lot easier to do than when it's between those big honking fenders. However. If you HAD to do it in a truck, how would YOU do it? Pull the cab and work on it in the chassis? Or disassemble the nose and attack it through the front? The kit we prefer is the full boat from Texas Speed, new lifters, gaskets, bolts, "hammer home plugs", no more factory installed GM failures! We're cab off kind of folks, but maaaaan the internet know it alls HATE it! Great video as always Richard always appreciate you giving some good honest real world experience in these videos Sir!

I am kicking myself in the butt. A few weeks back I did an intake manifold gasket and had to retort the valley cover because it had some loose bolts. I wish I would have plugged the ports and used the ITC cover. I disabled DOD with HP Tuners long ago. I used HP Tuners because I knew I would do the full delete at some time and wanted to be able to tune a new cam. I am planning for the spring. If I am taking the engine out, I am going to do a complete tear down and replace all the bearings, lifters, springs, head covers, headers, exhaust, cam and HF/HV oil pump. The works, because if I’m going in, I’m going all the way. I’ve never tore down an engine before, but good lord, the LS engine is stupid easy to work on,…besides rusted header bolts!!🤣😂🤣😂 I really love the LC9 in my pickup although I wish it had 799 heads, but I can’t complain with my lower compression reliability. 😂😂. Oh, I also want to do the torque converter at the same time as well as replace all my coolant lines and hoses to braided and silicone. I also want to upgrade my existing trans cooler to a larger one just for giggles. I know it is going to be expensive, but I really don’t want to do it again because I missed the perfect opportunity to do it with the motor out and wide open, easy access to every thing. Thanks for the awesome content and for covering so much on the cams!! I am pretty sure it’s the BTR TruckNorris for me. I want to retain as much down low torque as I can because this is still going to be my daily driver for scooting around the city. Cheaper DOD Delete would be an A-37 wheel bearing like a Timken37, or WTA-37 wheel bearing; cut the race and use the taper shaped hardened steel bearings, tap them in as well with a hammer. One of your commenters mentioned the A-37 wheel bearing already. An even cheaper option is to tap the holes w/a 3/8-16 tap and use set screws; use a vaccum while tapping to keep the metal from going where you dont want it to go. For good measure you should still use the valley pan w/their o'rings; so yes the ICT cover with its bling affect can still be used
@shmuck6615 күн бұрын
I know this is a year old comment, but fill the hole with grease first. It will absolutely prevent and trap any accidental shavings from going down. Then a blast of compressed air in the opposite hole will blast the chips up and out, along with a vacuum sucking it out too. Can't be too careful when doing this in an oil gallery.

The valley cover with the solenoids is called a Valve Lifter Oil Manifold or VLOM. Its job is to direct the flow of pressurized engine oil to the active fuel management valve lifters. The VLOM doesn't bleed off oil pressure from the lifters to collapse them. The VLOM actually applies pressurized oil to the AFM lifters via the eight towers cast into the block when cylinder deactivation is requested by the ECM. Using the the small plugs to block the flow from the VLOM is the best (and cheapest) way to deactivate AFM when doing a cam and lifter swap. The VLOM remains in place and is still connected to the ECM. As far as the ECM is concerned the AFM system is still working. If you replace the VLOM with a valley plate with O-rings the ECM will throw a code because it can't see the VLOM solenoids and the check engine light will come on. This can be corrected by reprogramming the ECM but this may cause a problem passing a smog check.

Im building a gen 3 lm7, and im putting flat top pistons in it to raise the compression, but i also know milling the head/block will also raise compression. I think it would be a very interesting test to see if there are diminishing returns to milling your heads to raise compression, or to see what the limit to shortening the head is. I assume there will come a point that the stock push rod length comes into consideration, and maybe piston to valve clearance on bigger cams?

Look, this might not happen to everyone but be careful when you bang the palm of your hands on the ratchets or wrenches. I’m not sure if that is what caused mine but I had carpal tunnel in both hands. What they do in the surgery is cut open the tendon that goes across your lower palm.

Can you plug the ports and put a cover on for 2X the block off? Or do the plugs not sit flush?

L76 here. If I turn off DOD in the ecu do I still need to plug the oil passages?
@GearheadOutlaw Жыл бұрын
To delete the system yes. Lifters, Plug holes or swap to the appropriate valley cover and ecm/pcm tuning is required. As I recall there is a bleed off valve in the oil sump in DOD/AFM engines that has to be blocked off as well. Normal non DOD/AFM engines don't have that bleed off valve in the oil sump

We just did this and are experiencing low oil pressure issues. Lost on what is going on. Had 60 lbs at start up and drove it 2 miles. Dropped to 10 lbs. Getting lifter noise now.....

Explain to me how it's easier to change the cam with the lifters IN as you say at 10:38? I've built several SBC and SBF engines, but not an LS.
@richardholdener1727 Жыл бұрын
the lifters in the LS are captured up in the lifter trays after rotating the cam. They stay in place, out of the way and allow easy cam swaps-unless the trays are old and worn

I'm aware that the stock AFM cam is different then a non AFM and just installing regular lifters will cause the engine to run poorly. I haven't been able to find out what specifically is different with the AFM cam and why there needs to be a difference.
@THEFERMANATOR Жыл бұрын
The AFM cams have more lift on the lobes that use the afm lifters than the lobes that use regular lifters. So if you put regular lifters in them, you will have 4 cylinders with more lift and duration than the 4 non afm cylinders creating a power imbalance.
@bobroberts2371 Жыл бұрын
@@THEFERMANATOR Thanks. So the AFM lifters are more " squishy " in normal operation and the lobe has higher lift / duration to compensate?

Hey Richard great video So iv seen or read u can delete AFM with a tune im guessing this isn’t true after watching ur video. I have 2015 Silverado with the L83 and had lifter fail with 39,000 miles. I do get great fuel mileage seen 24.8 on highway and get 15 mpg average. Would it be the same process to delete my engine than urs. Please let me know Great stuff as always Thank you
