My understanding is that ring gap is a free "mod" you can do so you dont trash your pistons. Cuz that's expensive. It will burn a very little amount of oil but not enough to matter due to blowby is my understanding. It's a trade-off that is worth it.

My money is on boost. 10 pounds will nearly double the output of a motor. On the other hand, even minor increases in compression can have pretty dramatic effects on power. Richard's video on 706 heads (higher compression) vs 317 heads (more airflow) is a perfect example. The 706 heads made more power all the way across the board.

Kimbal Mackinnon the engine with more compression will spool quicker. Both motors will be capable of the same power with everything else being equal. With the exact test you mentioned the 9:1 on 20psi engine will make more power, but who cares because the other engine can make the power quicker and can still make the same top end

I have people asking about doing turbo ls installs and the hardest thing to explain is how many mods you have to do to make sure the fuel system can keep up . Like running bigger fuel lines and figuring out some kind of pump system . The fuel system can cost more than the turbo.
@nopleaseno2515
@nopleaseno2515 3 жыл бұрын
Lines don’t get any bigger then stock. You’ll need to up the pressure. Pumps aren’t to costly. Many KZbin videos on the subject. My upgraded system cost so much just because of the unnecessary AN fittings and lines upgrades I made. Otherwise, pump, regular, injectors, line filters. In my case did cost more then an eBay turbo for sure. Cheers

Something I didn't catch mentioned in there actually has nothing to do about the engine but the infrastructure around the engine; I'm talking the axle and transmission in particular with secondary on suspension. Having an E85ed LS engine is a heck of an upgrade for a lot of chassis. Also awesome way of collecting thoughts on this. It's something that seems to have a lot of precedence of working very well around it. There's a reason it's common.

Boost curve? Back pressure curve? Timing? As someone else noted, it didn’t follow the boost power formula... Still, love this channel! That Summit stage 1 cam is amazing! Comment on CR: I think you said once the JE pistons had a 7cc dome. If true, that’s almost a full point of compression, 10.4 vs 9.5. On a 400 hp combo, that should be worth 15 hp or so NA. That makes a difference. I also vote for the meth injection camparo, 91 octane and say 15 psi compared to E85 (which is nice but hard to get day-to-day). Maybe move the meth injector farther away from the throttle body to perhaps get better distribution? You’ll have work for another decade, I think!

First , Richard I enjoy all the content that you have been putting out. Great stuff. Love killing the myths! Lol. Now for my question. I understand that the cam is the brains of the motor but the supporting stuff is important as well. So here’s the combo I’m attempting. 5.3 , 706 heads , truck intake. 4L60e. And it’s in a truck. I daily drive and tow once a month. Years ago you did a test on a camel that made power and torque everywhere in the curve over the stock cam. I can’t find that test. Second. I may have to remove my 706 heads as possible coolant leak in casting. What do I replace them with? Another set of 706 ? Not looking to rotate the earth just a healthy daily driver Your thoughts. One problem wt the computer is it’s much like on line learning. It’s only presented one way and no questions. I’ve noticed you seem to answer questions. Thanks again for your efforts.

Richard, the Summit 8720 218 outperforming the SS2 is pretty impactful to people who default to a 23x cam choice. I’d really like to see you fill in the gap between the 8720 and a BTR torque cam. Please see if you can get Summit to give you a 209/217 high lift truck cam. If that performs great down low while giving strong HP like the 8720, it could be perfect for a 4.8l street/strip motor - not race, but partial throttle would be great.

Yeah, I agree but it wouldn't be too bad if you pulled the engine, pull the heads off, oil pan off and just knock the pistons/rods out and gap the existing rings. New head gaskets, re-assemble to spec and re-install. Problem is, we all think it needs to turn into a $5000 job with new rods, pistons, studs, oil pump etc. It could be done and wouldn't be that painful if stick to the job at hand, lol.

Unless u live 25 miles from a station with e85....
@rustysausage69

In all of San Diego county (big fuckin county, 4500 square miles goes from the border up to Orange County), theres 6 gas stations that provide E85. Nearest one to me is 14 miles away, and I'm lucky that ones that close. Between that and the fuel system upgrades, bigger injectors, 25-35% reduction in fuel economy and corrosion of aluminum, I'll pass.

I think it would cool if you could do a test on a 1000hp +build ls . Run it with the stock ls exhaust manifolds and then with a set of flow tech turbo headers .I think people would really want to see if the headers gain you much

Please do the same test but with 93 Pump gas which is what most people would use on a daily, especially in some areas around the world where they dont sell E85. Great content as always 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Good video and excellent explanation of what's needed to easily pull power from a stock LS. I know that this is a rookie question but would you recommend getting an engine from summit racing or jegs if a person did not have the necessary knowledge, space, tools, or finances to get an engine from a junkyard to rebuild? Thanks

So what's the ballpark cost of a setup like this, not counting in fabrication and possible wrenching hours? And maybe some kind of hp/USD figure might be interesting also, just for people to figure out what their budgets, needs, and hopes are, and how they align.

Can you do a video on how to change ring gap?
@richardharris492
@richardharris492 4 жыл бұрын
Most 1st time boost guys don't have the skills to do ring gap correctly without causing themselves more issues than its worth. Example = improper torque on rod bolts, head bolts, re used head gaskets or NOT, ETC.

Dear Richard, Would you please talk about JUNKYARD TURBO LS for "Drifting Application" if you would? I mean witch setup can make Turbo Ls responsive, Low Lag "Creating Boost Early" and at the and time with Low Back Pressure. Small Turbo Size "68MM" related to Ls Capacities 4.8,5.3 6.0 . There is a lot of guys drifting with Turbo Ls. If you make it in Happy Hour and Horse Power Talk, you gonna be best of the best. Good Luck and keep forward.

Have you ever looked at gap-less rings that have an overlap wedge/step. I remember reading about them back in the 90's but have never actually tried them.

Damn dick I just bought the summit 8720 cam. In fact its still in the mail. I searched and searched for the right cam for my truck but settled on that one bc I wouldn't need a converter. I have an lsa supercharger I'm putting together. Maybe one day it will get put on my truck w that cam.

The people that are against gapping junkyard motor rings: they won the lottery and found a motor with looser than average gap. I've seen reports of people checking multiple blocks and finding a few gapped less than 0.010". Barely enough for stock power. Also: holy surge, batman! Seems like that BOV was stuck shut.
