I could have watched 100 hours of this. It’s nice to see a British engine finding new life. Probably a better life than it’s original. Keep up the content. We are loving this over here in the United Kingdom.

Again Mr. Owen, both you and your father produced 5 hours of wonderful content and a great example of what KZbin was meant to be. Seeing your engine run for the first time was a true rush. Thanks for working so hard to develop and deliver this series and for saving another E-type from the scrap pile, a commendable endeavor by any measure.

Goodness knows the feeling you both get when that engine comes to life, even after watching all the videos and having the strength not to peek at the last video, it was such a joy to see british engineering come back to life. This is important information for the future in these videos. Utmost respect to you and your Dad!

Seeing the old Unipart packaging reminds me of the old car spares shops we used to have in most towns years ago. Not too many of those left here in the UK now though. Such a shame that Unipart went out of business, like you say, they supported a lot of the older UK made cars. Been great watching this old Jag coming back together, great to see she will live once again.

Absolutely FANTASTIC series on this rebuild. I'm nearly 74 years old, had a '68 OTS years ago, currently own a '70 OTS. Before your series, I didn't know the difference between a camshaft and a crankshaft! Now, I wish I had had the opportunity to get more involved years ago. Doing a project like this with your father has to be a very special experience. He is really knowledgeable! Thanks to both of you in giving me this education as to what everything is all about. I sure would like to compare driving an E-Type with the triple SU set up, and compare the performance to the dual Strombergs in mine. I'm looking forward to future presentations!!

Fantastic job, A good way to get the bush out is to half fill the hole with grease and then get a close fitting (but not tight) rod and hammer it into the hole in the bush. Hydraulic pressure then usually pushes the bush out.

A very enjoyable series about this engine build. Seeing how this dirty and seized engine turned out may give a lot of inspiration to other people with obviously hopeless cases in car, and my case, locomotive restoration. I'm working with a group of people to resurect one of the few remaining Crossley SVT8 2 stroke diesel engines in the world and have it fitted back in a locomotive we are restoring, and it was in a bad shape as this engine, we were happy to source a V12 for spare parts which can be fitted to the V8. The engine been run up with no exhaust headers on it sounded like a Merlin!

I really enjoyed the entire series. When you started the engine up without the exhaust, it sounded like a WWII British Spitfire! Love it! It was great watching you both put the engine together and imagining what my own might have been like had it been worked on by experts like you and your father. What I would give to be able to put on some kind of helmet connected to a computer to input your combined downloaded knowledge and experience into my otherwise clueless head. Great videos. They brought back memories of my 1972 XJ6 days. I loved that car. Thank you again! Oops! Once again, after writing my thanks, I began to read what others said. Immediately I see Jim Burig and I recognized the same sound of the Spitfire! I swear I did not read any comments before writing this! My XJ6 did not have the cardboard cable holder. It was always overheating in the Arizona desert.

It was a Series 1 engine of 3.8L... I brought the engine home before it was thrown in the scrap dumpster. Sold it online in less than an hour for $3200. It went to a good home, not a bad day profit wise. Beautiful engines when brought back to new like this. Well done.

Excellent series, i found it quite funny the dog showed up for the transmission mounting to the engine, then he could not be bothered at all. But it was really nice to hear how this "junk" engine started up first try and ran really smooth. The only thing i would personally do is to install electronic ignition (try to make it look stock though), the mechanical stuff wears down and has to run tight tolerances to work properly.

You were on the right track using grease to pump the spiggot bush out. However, using an entire input shaft is a no no. It's too heavy & cannot move fast enough with a hammer blow to "shock" the bush free. All you need is a straight, clean, bolt around 8 inches long that is a fairly loose fit in the bush. You tightly wind masking tape around the end of the bolt until it is a firm fit in the bush. each time you clock it with a hammer, the tape will splay slightly under hydraulic pressure & make a perfect seal. Then the grease can't easily sneak out. Use a piece of plywood with a suitable hole in it to mask & protect the back of the engine from hammer strike & smack that bolt square & hard. Top up the grease as the bush is displaced. Using the tape around the bolt stops your "piston drift" from scuffing the inside bore of the bush. Bush is driven out uninjured & can be reused if unworn. These bushes are usually porous sintered bronze & should be soaked in engine oil overnight before fitting. I'm in AUST. Over here, our local GM product is a Holden. We've been grafting twin & triple SUs onto Holden Six engines since the 1950s. I have 2x 1958 Holden sedans. One has Pomgolian Twin 1 3/4" SUs from a Triumph TR3 on a 138CI Grey Engine which makes just over 140HP depending on atmospheric conditions. The other runs Triple 1 3/4" SUs frm locally built Morris/Austin cars from the early '70s on a 208CI Red Engine. It makes around 240HP. A fully sorted race prepped 208 (which is a bored out Holden 202) can make 330HP with Jag Triple 2" carbs. However, that kind of stress often results in an electrical problem... simply because a conrod has escaped the harsh environment in the crankcase, smashed its way out & knocked the alternator off the block! Many race records have been set & reset over here by well sorted 202 Holden Torana Group N racecars which can often find their way back onto public roads. Our biggest annual sporting event is the Bathurst 1000. In 1972 this epic event (then held over 500 miles) was won by one of these little Triple Carb 202 Toranas. No 351 powered Ford product could outrun it & we had some serious Ford backed, big money Supercars in that David & Goliath battle. It very nearly happened again in 1973 over a 1000km distance. This time the 202 Torana brigade went to a lot of trouble & had found even more power & more reliability in the "upstart" 202. Ford fans were nearly in tears when these little Toranas broke the fat backs of the thundering, brutal, great, clanking 351 Cleveland powered Falcon GT Hardtops. No Falcon could keep up. Then, it was disaster & chaos! The lead torana (on thirsty triple Webers) coughed & croaked, out of fuel when miles ahead with the race in the bag. it had to be pushed up a slight grade into the pits before fuel could be added. A Falcon roared on & gained the lead. Undeterred, the 2 front running Toranas got off after the lead Falcon & had nearly caught it, when both Dealer Team Toranas hit debri on the track & punctured tyres. A Falcon hung on for the win. Many Falcons had blown their engines to Kingdom Come this day trying to stay with the ferocious, pintsized, relentless, reliable Toranas. A HDT Torana recovered from a puncture & came home in 2nd spot. That car prepared by wizards Ian Tate & Harry Firth & driven by talented Colin Bond ran a 202 fitted with more economical triple Jag 2" SUs. Very few people know the tiny details of this story. You'll find these races on KZbin. Many Thanks to You! Jaguar engines are works of art. Taking the time to restore them is truly commendable. The big payoff comes when your "little" 6 gets up & trounces bigger V8s. Keep up the good work. PS... Add some compression, some extra cam duration & a fat set of tuned length tubular headers & your Jag engine will sing to you. Better still, find an old raceprepped engine with a recurved dizzy, lightened flywheel & all the other well known tweaks, rebuild it & go blow the doors off some lazy V8s!

When doing rebuilds we learnt to fill the sintered bronze spigot bush full of oil then compress the oil until it oozes out of the wall of the bush before fitting it. Much better penetration than soaking them over night. Makes them last and last and last. Was at Bathurst to see Doug Chivas push that little XU1 up the hill into the pits. He would have already been in his fifties when he did that. Amazing to see him make it from the bottom of Conrod to the pit entrance.

40:48 - I was just thinking back and trying to remember (I'm going to re-watch the series anyway), and this reminded me that you hadn't done any additional balancing during the build, perhaps the only thing I might have done differently (but maybe not!). What a lovely, almost musical exhaust note though.

Just a great series, I've studied & watched them all. I assisted with suggestions on the oil line from filter head to sump. Watching the numerous bits & pieces to the dizzy & how almost any one of the lets say 35 screws, springs, weights, wires, washers etc. could break or go wrong made me glad that i installed the EDIS ignition system into my '68 E Type so i had none of the moving parts, no dizzy in the block. Plug gap at .050 running 3 SUs. Your engine looks just great & i know how pleased you are on a job well done.

I also bought a plug wire assembly from Moss Motors about a year and a half ago. It just sat until this week in its plastic bag. On a whim I did a continuity test on each wire. Then I measured the ohms through each wire. Come to find out that one of the wires with connector only measured 1.9 k-ohms and the other 5 measured 5 k-ohms. I looked down inside the #5 Champion connector (I probably should have gotten a Lucas assembly like Richard did) and it was dark/black. The others were shiny bright. Now I'm trying to get the connector replaced. Lesson learned. Test each wire/connector to make sure they are all the same... right when you receive it from one's supplier. You never know... and if you never did this and then started up the engine, if might not run very well. You'd wind up replacing a lot of stuff trying to trouble shoot. Who would have thought a connector, right out of the box, would have one bad one out of 6? 😞

Just now seeing this, lovely build, only one little thing, the head studs and the coolant leak, you should have put some Teflon sealant or tape on the head studs where they go into the block to stop the leaks and prevent the new studs from rusting again.

Nice to see the finish! Was anybody else watching that lock washer work it's way deeper and deeper into the distributor during the disassembly?

Yeah, it was gone pretty quick once everything was out. Too bad that distributor didn't work.

A Six speed Trans. ... 380 h.p.- 380 Ib-ft Maybe more. ? Hand welded custom Titanium Headers and exhaust. Should be good fun in a 2500 lb. E type. B.T.W. Great Jobs Guys, that's about as close to the sound of a Merlin engine you will get from a car engine.

Totally agree with you, as a small boy I would go with my father who helped to restore Merlin Engines for the H,A,A from the very first hearing of a Merlin Engine it imprints in your sole and is never forgotten, the distinctive sound comes from the shape of the exhaust outlet ports causing a gas boom in sound. I've watched all of this rebuild and admire the attention to detail and criticality of the engineering, Great work carried out by people who obviously love the job they do with many years of experience that clearly shows in the videos.
