This time I restore into full operation a Chronograph watch I bought from Amazon with an apparent failure of the chronograph mechanism. The movement of this watch is a Seagull ST1901 which is pretty much identical to the mid-nineteeth century Swiss Venus 178. This is because back in the 1960s China wanted to create its own watches and Venus, a Swiss manufacturer wanted to upgrade its tooling. So Venus sold their tools and know how to the Tianjin Watch Factory in China. I got unlucky with my own purchase from Amazon with this chronograph and found the watch had seized after only a few weeks. In this video I get to the root of the problem and use some old watchmaking tools and techniques to restore the watch back to full oeration.

My teen daughter Billie discovered her love for watchmaking at a young age. Because she has emotional problems we have her schooled at home. This is to great advantage because she spends nearly all her spare time studying and practising the craft, knowing one day she will be a watchmaker like you. We've bought her professional watchmaking tools like yours. Billie thanks you for all your videos and is a subscriber. Me? I work for an Air Ambulance and love your videos because they are sublimely relaxing. It is testament to you that my daughter is so bright. You have no idea the inspiration you have given my daughter, and I humbly thank you. Later this evening Billie will be joining your other site so she can learn more. All the very best and God bless, Wendi 🌻

The swan neck regulator makes regulating the watch really difficult. You have to take the movement partially out of the case to access the adjustment screw, which is extremely tiny. And a false move with the screwdriver puts it right into balance spring.

Mark from long Island watch said that there are 2 different versions of these st1901 movements. The version sea-gull manufacturers and some that a separate factory in china manufacturers. The ones from seagull are excellent quality but the ones from the other factory are subpar. The issue is figuring out which version the watch builder or watchmaker is using.

I’ve got a st1901 based watch that I bought new for £130. I’ve found that the chronograph hand resets to a different place each time the chrono is used. It’s only a second or two away from 0 but could be a way of telling which one you have?

@orbwheelsandwatches that sucks man. I own a couple st1901 based watches. The cheaper 1964 watches i stay away from because those seem to be the watches that have the most problems. I had an issue with mine and ive seen a lot of complaints about those watches. Idk who is assembling those, but it isn't sea-gull. I can attest to Sugess and Merkur watches. Mine have been flawless, and i haven't heard many complaints.

This illustrates the problem with some of these micro brands that don't have a long track record in making watches. You shouldn't have had to re- make the pushers if they had been designed properly in the first place. I think people have to understand that you get what you pay for and these can't be regarded as quality movements but more of a novelty.

Hi Michael... Good to hear from you! The digiscope is a real blessing with the lathe. I have much respect for anyone cutting a staff squinting through a loupe. You should definitely do some chronographs... They are somehow really satisfying to work on. I did not cover the adjustment of the centrics in this video and its a goid idea to swat up a little on these before starting if you are not familiar. Also one of the springs on the st19 has a small shim underneath it which is easy to lose if you don't know it's there. Thanks again. Richard

Beautiful movement, that’s how I clean my parts with a soft artist brush with cut short bristles I don’t work on enough movements to warrant spending huge money on cleaning machines plus I think it adds to the experience of a full service and rebuild when you’ve lovingly wash every single part of the watch. I did find out the hard way not to rinse hairsprings in IPA as the shellac dissolves on the end stud that controls the beat error adjustment, it’s all a learning process but all recoverable with a little patience and perseverance. 👍🙏👏

Always appreciate the splined Chronograph pusher tubes and pushers. No rotation. Therefore the slot end of the pusher screw cannot rotate and line up with the movement pusher arm. Had a wakmann v72C which failed to start randomly. Upon disassembly I noticed the pusher tube and pusher had been replaced by a non splined version. It allowed the pusher to rotate and when the slot lined up with the pusher arm preventing the engagement of the pusher. The fix was to replace the pusher with a splined version. I bring this up as I noticed that the seagull case is not splined and that the pusher slot lined up with the pusher arm cam. As usual, wonderful video, editing and presentation. But the way, I have a couple of these seagulls from the seagull factory. I wish they made the 12 hour version.

I loved this vlog. My son and I bought a Seagull movement two years ago to fit in to a case. It is wonderful, only our incompetence has prevented it doing its job. Criticism? If Seagull focussed more on the 'finer' finishing of the movements then they would certainly be competing with the Swiss. My son and I eventually found a German made case with an ETA 2892 A1 movement for 'no money' and it is 'absolutely perfect'. Would I use a Seagull movement again, yes. Would I wear it with 'pride' no - quality is certainly in the detail. Great vlog. My thanks.

I wonder how many people have bought this watch and have thrown it in the garbage when the same malfunction happened to them and they didn't feel like spending hundreds of dollars (or pounds) to get it fixed. So sad that a piece that could have been made correctly probably caused many watches to fail. Anyway, thank you for the video. Interesting. I have a Sugess 1963 38mm and just checked it out. It doesn't have any extensions or movement holder probably because of the smaller diameter case. The chrono on mine works well enough but the hand doesn't always centre on reset. The main issue I have with mine is the power reserve is about 10 hours below the specified 40ish hours. I bought from a UK seller and had a replacement but that was more or less the same. I've heard others have this issue as well.

This has always been my question with this movement, how reliable are they. I have purchased six watches with this movement in them over the past two years. I have a large collection so I have barely worn them. When I do wear them, I really don't use the chronograph. I would assume that as infrequently as I wear them they will hopefully last awhile. Do you think this flaw in the pushers is a design characteristic of the movement or does it have to do with what type of pushers the manufacturer, in this case Sugess put in the movement. Sugess is one of the biggest companies using this movement in their watches.
@sinjinadams2862
@sinjinadams2862 Жыл бұрын
Well I think I just answered my own question. I just checked one of my Phylida's and I see the pushers are different. They are larger on the outside on the Phylida. I can't tell though if there is a difference in length. The pushers are also much harder to push in on the Phylida versus the Sugess. The Sugess feels much nicer.

Hi H Lebo... You raise a good point. From an engineering perspective there were obviously some pretty significant shortcomings with the wztch I received. I think the pushers probably got mixed up with ones intended for a smaller case. But most folks will probably not encounter this. Aesthetically the watch is 'very attractive' I think. I really like the look of it. I hope this clarifies what I was trying to say. Richard

I don't know if people are always lucky and get a working, reliable watch or if I am just very unlucky ! My latest purchase, a brand new Addiesdive AD2112 must be the most inconsistently inaccurate watch even when kept fully wound and in a stationary position. It is a great pity as it is an extremely nice looking watch. It was my first, and probably last, Aliexpress purchase. It brings home the problems that occur when you want to return something to China. My luck really must have been out that day as they then released a quartz VH31 version which is much cheaper and will be more accurate over 1 or 2 months than the NH38 will be over a single day (or a couple of hours in my case....).

Nice work, Richard. As usual. The problem I have with mine is that when I press the top pusher, The second hand moves to the 4 second mark before starting the chronograph. I'm tempted to just leave it as it is, but it is a pity. Is there an "easy" fix, please?

Hi Richard. A couple of years ago I purchased a Poljot Strumanskie (Navigator) 33mm copy of Yuri Gagarin’s watch. Issued to him when he graduated from Soviet flight school. Apparently, it has a “knock off” Breguet movement. Which I’m inclined to believe, as the second hand travels very smoothly, and it keeps very good time. Gagarin used it on his first space flight, but would’ve used the capsule clock instead. I paid then, £350. And it’s worth every penny. Apparently, the first wrist watch in space was worn by a dog-out.🫡 Subscribed.👍🏻

Hi Jonty! You subscribed! Good man! Yes the Poljot 3133 is a good Chronograph too for sure and some interesting history with that piece too! Nice one! Thanks for sharing. Richard

I have a Seagull 1963 (from Long Island Watch) that won’t wind. When I try as soon as I let go of the crown it spins backwards. So far two watchmakers say they can’t fix it. Ugh! - Aaron

Hi Aaron... Ironically., given your KZbin 'handle' the symptom you describe is consistent with a defective 'click mechanism'.... If so, and of course it might be something else, it should be reasonably easy to fix. Hope you can get it sorted. Thanks for the feedback. Richard

I agree they are good 👍 but as any chronos ... could need a "small to full" service (all chronos are in this category) ⚠ ♻ i search-buy these ST19 chrono (Sugess Alpha Seagull 1963) as non working for repair / parts ♻ ... very good for a beginner (but no spare parts 😪 ... only stem could be found in detail, ¿ even dial / set of hands ? any advice other than alpha-watches ? 🤔)

I watch one video on a channel I have never watched before and then KZbin serves me up their videos day after day, all whist channels I am subscribed too never appear on my feed. So whilst I appreciate that there is a benefit to you from having subscribers, for us mere mortals out here in viewer land it actually makes no difference. I subscribe and click the like button out of politeness, not because it is of any benefit to me. I wish that it were otherwise.

I have one of these ST1901s, but there's an issue on mine where when I press the top pusher the chronograph seconds hand sometimes flies back 1 or 3 seconds before the mechanism starts, and thus also advances the minute counter. This seems to happen especially often if I'm in a position where my watch is tilted to the left a bit compared to gravity. How might I go about fixing this? Bit of a cheap watch, so I'd rather fix the issue myself.

mine one stops when in a certain angle, its good enough to use as fashion but i am never able to trust it, its the sugess breitling bo1 premier homage, its so pretty so its a shame, sound like the balance starts rubbing against something at that angle and if you hold it long enough it stops
