Right? On Canon bodies just a model or two prior, I've seen vids where you just slide out the little metal 'liner' of the hot shoe, and tighten the screws from the outside. This is only an active choice by Canon to make repair more difficult or prohibitive.

I followed this tutorial on my EOS R and it worked as well. Only major difference is the back left hot shoe screw to tighten down is hidden behind another cable that I did not want to undo. I left it alone and secured the other 3. The R's screw cover flaps are not as big and are tough to work with...I didn't do a great job on those. Cables were the tricky part putting back together... be patient and delicate. A sharp #000 phelps screw driver will be needed for all the screws, otherwise they may strip with anything bigger. THANKS for the details and conversations throughout... so helpful.

Thank you!!!! I bought verbatim everything you used and my husband did one of my cameras tonight in less than an hour. He didn't have to take the eye attachment totally out (since he wasn't filming a diy) and he said the hot shoe screws basically were falling out and were held in place by that layer of tape. Then they almost fell into the camera but got caught because of the magnetic screw driver. So crazy. Thank you so much!

243 is slightly higher strength. I have had no repeat issues (I’ve done this repair about 6 times and some about 3 years ago)so I think 243 is the way to go. But 242 is still medium strength. Looks like 243 is slightly newer technology.

It is the top screw under the flap that covers the USB and HDMI ports. You wouldn't happen to know what size that screw is and where I could get it. Second where did you get the mat that you used in the video to keep track of all the screws? Thanks, John

Thank You very much! It cost me $38 for an anti static mat and a 132 piece electronic screw driver set with a JIS (Japinise Industrial Standard) JIS0000 bit. Canon quoted me $457 to do the repair. I had only 1 screw holding the hot shoe on my R6 after 3 years of use. The other 3 were hanging by a thread. I'm wondering if that had something to do with camera settings mysteriously changing and the camera blacking out over the last 1-1/2 or so....

Hopefully you figured this out, but in case you didn't, I took my R5 apart for a different reason, and after reassembly found that it wouldn't turn on. I panicked, took it apart again, and reassembled it again, but still wouldn't work. I let it sit for a couple of minutes with a battery in it, and suddenly I was able to turn it on. There appears to be something that needs to charge back up after disassembly in order for it to work. I don't know what, but the solution was to put the camera back together and let it sit (turned off) with a battery in it for a couple of minutes.

I literally just dropped off my R5 at the post office to ship to Newport News VA. My 3rd such repair, and was disgusted to find out that they have increased the repair to $500 + tax. (with Gold membership I got $100 off but still $426 w/tax + shipping). Having learned lessons from my 5D3 I improvised a bracket for the cameras (now my R3, R5 and R6) to mount the speed lights on and use a radio trigger on hot shoe to trigger the speedlight next to it and other slaves. Still, my R6 had to be sent in last summer and today the R5. I wonder if any class action had been brought up because this is apparently a serious flaw in their design.

My big question is - my flashes go haywire, and I'm wondering if it's strictly due to the loose hotshoes. @richardsvacuumcenter

I'll ask her! Thank you! My first thought is that the flashes could definitely be affected by this loose connection. Being in the vacuum repair industry I have seen lots of crazy things that are caused by a non-secured electric connection. So it would be my guess that once you get your hot shoes secured, you will cease to have flash issues.

She uses Godox flashes. They were not flashing regularly when her hot shoes were loose. Now they are acting fine. You can test this by pressing firmly down on your flash while shooting to replicate it being secured and seeing if your flash is reliable when you are pressing it down firmly.
