Today I have come to explore Ringmer, I believe the largest village in Sussex. After seeking out the older part of the village I head up to the South Downs in search of the old Windmill there.

I am in search of what England means to me. Others will have another concept of this country and that is for them. These videos are about My England.

Wonderfully filmed! I was thinking about the old phone box; it’s probably near me at a yard in Merstham where they are sold from (you can see all the phone boxes there when you take a train to London.) I’m 40, and I don’t think I have ever used a phone box!

I watch these videos on my 70" TV. The picture and color is outstanding 👍. I usually don't comment because of the way I access these videos. Great history. Thank you. Eaglegards... P.S. Talking about the well reminded me of the great English doctor named John Snow. His mid 1800s study on cholera using mapping of wells was ground breaking.

Theres a giant oak tree in the triangle of a 3 way junction near me. This week I found a photograph of it in 1892. Trees are special as you can enjoy the same shade as your great great great grandparents did.

Hello Richard, good to see you visiting Ringmer, a village close to my heart. An ancestor of mine Henry Barber, born in 1749 had a shoemaking business on the main road there. His lovely whitewashed cottage and workshop are still there today, sadly I didn't inherit it . He died in 1827 and left me nothing 😭......Have you explored the next village Laughton ? I can tell you a real murkey storey of fratricide there in 1880's.....!

Breathtakingly stunning. Between your info, filming, tortoise , tree, green , church with graveyard and walk up the hill to the windmill I feel quite choked up. Thank you for such an interesting and beautiful start to my morning.

I was born here in the mid 1960's in a cottage on the edge of the village green, into a village that was smaller than now, and somwhere that shaped my early life and happy memories. One not so happy memory was cutting my head on the handle of the village pump and having to have stitches, the scar of which I can still feel! The Downs above Ringmer and the lanes and fields around were our idyllic playground and although I moved away in 1982, my heart will forever be there.

St Mary's was a beautiful church. Would love to see the inside sometime! Lovely church yard...loved that weeping willow! Ringmer appears to be a charming old village, but very busy w/ that main road going thru it.

Thank you Richard for taking us to Ringmer, like you I have often driven though the village but never stopped. The remaining "Post" from the old "Windmill" looks a bit sad especially with that modern monstrosity behind it!

That old village pump is just like one that was situated in my last school at Sherfield English. Even the wheel is the same size. We older boys would take it in turns to go up to the old pump and give it 100 turns, which pumped water for the headmistress, who lived next door. Happy days.

Many many years ago We sang a wedding at the church and I talked to the organist about the specification (it's a very large instrument for a 'village' church. He informed me that it came from a 'certain large operatic country house' nearby and it was large because it was designed to fill the operahouse. You have to be very careful what stops are used for fear of rattling the roof and deafening the congregation.....

Goodness, what a tree! The long shot from further back on this magnificent green showed what I took to be two or three trees. Not only is England changing dramatically, it is also changing grammatically! Anyway, a very nice village video Mr Vobes...

Coin phones are still available in my grocery store , I am unable to remember when they disappeared from the streets it is so long ago. What I notice about my city is the disappearing courtesy of greetings, from the young people on the sidewalks, people of my generation and the next still do wish each other a good morning or say what a lovely day we are having.... especially when the weather is miserable but the children and other young people are silent playing with their phones . Seniors have been knocked down by young women pushing prams and texting on their phones and going on not even aware of the havoc they have left behind. I suppose that I like our ancestors lament that there are changes. Is must be genetically engineered as I remember reading about ancient Egyptian people and how they lamented the behaviour of the children not doing their school work etc.. I wonder how on earth has the relic of the mill survived thank you for the walk today as your searched for your childhood England 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖❤️

I believe the Glyndebourne Estate recreated the remains of what was left of the windmill in the 1960s and the only original remaining bit is the tower section of the main post of the mill. The 4 trestle legs replaced the originals in the 1960s and were much chunkier originally. The trestle would have stood on 4 brick piers and the mill had a roundhouse around it. It is good that something remains. I have always been smitten with this "minor" remains.

Familiar territory for me, both as a bus driver, and vehicle parts delivery driver in later years. But always good to see the place through another pair of eyes. Have seen many fairs on the green, and the setting really suits them. Magical in the evenings. Thanks Richard. You'll be catching up with MY locations soon!!

Now musing on what differentiates a village from a town and a village hall from a town hall! Interesting about the tortoise - I did not realise it hailed from Ringmer. The phone box removal is sad. It is still marked on OS map which may confuse future navigation! Great video - loving the photography and composition of the scenes you chose to present to us.

Ironically I just read that the tortoise that Charles Darwin brought back to England recently died, outliving him by 126 years! Don't you just love climbing a hill then complaining that it was steeper then it looks? What a sense of exultation that you made it! I feel the same way climbing the stairs to my apartment!
