I play out and this has been my go to for the past five years. It can more than hold its own for smaller venues. I frequently get MAD compliments on my tone from other guitarists at gigs we play at and am asked about this amp. I paid around $200 for it but it's worth $700. CHANGE THE SPEAKER!!! The 70/80 muddies up / farts out at higher volumes. I replaced it with a heavy magnet Warehouse Reaper which is a better version of the Celestion G12H Anniversary. It's PERFECT for this amp. It really tightens up the bottom and at higher volumes it's got solid thump, punch and clarity to cut through the mix for solos. I also swapped out the Chinese tubes with a complete set of JJ's which alleviates the ice pickyness you sometimes get with EL84's. We play a mix of mostly classic hard rock from the 70's with some 80's metal thrown in. This amp NAILS those Marshall JMP tones and will even take you into early JCM territory with the right dist pedal; i.e. it accepts pedals VERY WELL. I have 4 dist pedals on my board. I never use more than one at a time but each pedal gives me a slightly different tone; e.g. the OLDER Wampler Pinnacle for classic rock tones and the Octonaught Hyperdrive for metal. The effects loop is PERFECT and functions well with the pedals I run in between pre and power sections of the amp. Lastly, placement of this amp on the stage is really important. I would highly recommend you DO NOT use an amp stand. Place it upright on the stage and stick a plexiglass amp shield in front of it. This not only breaks up the beaming effect but really helps in sound dispersal. In most small venues we don't even need to mic it.

I think you are spot on with your assessment of this amp.... Basically this is just a different flavor of the highly underrated Laney Cub which in my book is the modern equivalent of something like a Deluxe Reverb back in the day. If you want real spring reverb and a more Fendery take on the Laney Cub (that can get Marshallish when driven) this is preferable to the Laney in my book.
@GTX11238 ай бұрын
@@toddashley407 Thanks. I played through a Laney Cub once and found it to be quite different and not as good as this amp. This was at a music store that deals in a large volume of used guitars and equipment so its possible it was because the amp was in dire need of new power tubes. I never ceased to be amazed at how the Monoprice Stageright amp dials in those classic Marshall tones with the right dist pedal in front of it. I'm also amazed at how clueless Marshall and some of these other amp manufacturers are. You'd think that with this much buzz about an amp for this amount of money, they'd have enough curiosity to check one out and then design something comparable. Marshall in particular came out with the Origin series some yrs ago which has those nice 1970's JMP extended mids but that's about it. It didn't do well retail wise because they didn't put enough gain in the circuit. I had one briefly and no matter what dist pedal I put in front of it, I couldn't get it to grind the way a late 60's plexi would. The DSL line has good gain but the mids are WAY too scooped for my liking. All they need to do is put a mid boost switch on the DSL amps and voila, problem solved. I guess they'd rather force customers to shell out a lot more money for their high dollar UK built amps.

@@GTX1123 So much of the mainstream model branded stuff is made in China (or elsewhere now) anyways. I learned awhile back not getting stuck on what the nameplate says but what the product actually does. In the case of this amp I don't actually know if it's made in same place as the actual Laneys - but if you told me it was it wouldn't surprise me (I do know the branded Laney Cubs are actually made in China as well). This is a great clean pedal platform. As much as I like the overdrive circuit on it I found that I actually like to run this amp clean with a couple different sansamps in front of it (Fuzzy Brit/Marshall Plexi's and RK5/Deluxe Reverb both of which can be bypassed) This essentially gives me 3 different core tones (one of which is the amp itself set to clean). My pedalboard is centered on using a Klon clone OD (EHX Soul Food) or Fuzz Face with both an Xotic EP (high headroom high cut boost) and Super Clean Boost (set for mid boosting) as well as a Fulltone Clyde Deluxe in front of it. All of the above runs into a firmware updated TC Electronics Plethora which offers Cab SIM options to boot. This amp handles this better than any other EL84 1X12 combo I have run my rig into including some more boutique stuff like DR Z and hand wired Fender Deluxe Reverbs. I've tried it into Marshall DSL 15 & 20 as well but the tone stack in the Monoprice played with my board much better than the Marshall combos did. The amp isn't perfect - yes it benefits from a speaker upgrade but the stock speaker isn't "bad" in my book unless you must have something more akin to a v30 or greenback. I overcome this by accepting the stock speaker for what it is and get into other territory via sansamp and speaker cab sim. The stock speaker is actually pretty vanilla in this regard - which is good in my pedalboard application. If it had say a V30 in it I would actually struggle more to make this combo sound like a blue alnico for example. My point is that this is a very very solid amp to take into a multitude of different directions depending on your individual applications which is why I would much prefer it over a Marshall DSL for example. The preamp on this combo is very Marshallish while the cleans are something like a Hot Rod Deluxe. If that sounds strange to people they have to understand this isn't weird when you consider that the JCM45 is actually based on the Fender Bassman. This means the amp on it's own borders on being amazeballs versatile on its own. It goes where a Hot Rod Deluxe simply can't. I approach all this stuff from a very different place than most people because I am going for the closest approximations of true tube response at ANY VOLUME LEVEL. So I want an amp that is capable of providing the missing true power amp breakup when I must have it (ex. recording) and since I prefer the EL84 flavor mainly because of how quickly it can do it over other stuff (plus I am a bluesy guy too boot) an amp like this makes sense. My sansamps are not boxed in by this combo at all and I don't have to fight with it and the tone is great a low volume but just gets sweeter the more I move the master volume. The presence control on this amp is one of its big secrets - weather you prefer you core tone dark or bright you get both and are not locked into one or the other which is HUGE. Best thing to happen with me with gear was getting over the feeling it had to have brand name attached to it and understanding that the big companies do stuff like goto Cort Guitars in Indonesia (previously in Korea) to have things like PRS SEs guitars, Music Man Sterlings/Fender SE guitars ect. made - all of which are honestly solid products and won't break in the kid's collage fund you been working years to build.

I also replaced the Celestion with an old 30W Peavey Sheffield 1230, which tightened up the tone and got rid of that slight tininess that it had (which some people actually like). Hey Rich, really like your channel. I had followed the SR15 for a year or so. Amazing reviews. Pulled the trigger this February (2023) when price and discounts aligned. Playing only in my basement space, I decided to track hours for speaker break in/possible upgrade. I got to 70 hours and began to notice noise. It grew worse - gravelly growling to some whirring/screeching. Sent it back for warranty replacement. Took a week to go from east coast to west. Then 2 day replacement from distribution center. Decided to track hours again. Got right at 200 hours, ready to assume all is good - then the same noise started. Thought about warranty replacement but thought about having to start the cycle again - ugh. So started replacing tubes. First the preamps (12AX7) - replaced V1, still noise. Replaced V2 & V3, still noise - now almost unplayable. Replaced power tubes (EL84), problem solved. I’m now at 100+ hours on these and all is good. $100 of JJ tubes but OK. Will still track for a good while but pretty sure all is good. For the upgrade reviewers, I do think the JJs sound somewhat noticeably better than stock. This is a great amp with a great track record over a number of years. I think they just got a bad batch of power tubes in 2023. Hope yours stays good.

From what I understand it is the same circuit as the Laney Cub 12 - yet this one has a spring reverb. I believe that Laney are only making amps with digital reverb now (when I emailed Laney a number of months ago about a failed reverb in my older LC15R the tech said that they don't carry reverb trays any longer). I suppose it depends on whether one feels this is an upgrade or downgrade - I myself love a spring reverb in an amp.

Hey Rich, I got my Monoprice yesterday and I have been on it for hours. You make it sound better than most. I think the clean sound is excellent but the higher the gain, or gain through pedals, the worse it sounds. I feel that not only does it break up so quickly, but the sound of the breakup isn’t pleasing. I don’t know if reviewers tweak the sound in post production but the one I got I’m just not sold on yet.

The Seventy-80 speaker takes a while to bed in. They're a little harsh when they are presented with clipping/breakup to begin with. Once they've softened up, they're OK. Not brilliant, but better than when new by a country mile. Give them a few more hours of loud and wonder why they get such a bad rep. The Monoprice is a Laney Cub 12r in a frock. The schematics are readily available. On the schematics, the bias point and value is shown. A lot of Intertek manufactured ( Laney/Monoprice/SubZero/HB and many others ) amps come biased very cold. This is good in terms of valve life, but not so good in terms of sound. If you have a set of bias probes, setting the bias to 70% at idle brings a lovely warmth to the sound. If you don't, then the value on the schematic is a good ball-park. There are some excellent threads and links to setting the bias on these over on the TDRI forum.

I picked one up last year on a Black Friday sale from Walmart for $200. Wasn't expecting much from the price but damn was I surprised! With a Celestion speaker and a spring reverb too? Sounds even better into my Marshall 412 cabinet. 😁

Rich you make this amp sound superb better than most if I didn't already have seven amps and two of them being Fender 15 amp super champ xd's which I like except the stock speakers are not up to par with what I like but that does have a speaker out so I plug them into other cabinets like a EV 12 L 200watt speaker cab and that fixes that problem. What's the weirdest thing sounds if I didn't have all that stuff I'd probably buy one of these to try it out for sure love the way it sounds.. is the stock speaker and 8 ohm or a 16 ohm?
@johnstone31529 ай бұрын
I have the super champ XD also, what speaker would you recommend as a replacement for the 10 inch?
@twowaymuir9 ай бұрын
@@johnstone3152 Probably an Eminence Canabis Rex or a decent Celestion speaker. I recently replaced the stock speakers in both of mine with Hartke Aluminum Cone 100 watt 4 Ohm Bass speakers and the amps sound super awesome now. Get something rated for at least a 30 watt or greater rating. 8 or 4 ohm speakers are fine.

Hey rich I bought one last year I loved it until when I hit a certain note it would rattle I’m thinking it’s a bad tube I’m going to order replacement tubes same as blues jr the note I hit is on b string in the e note position it’s definitely messed up any input would be great also congrats on new gig

I would really appreciate a comment back thank you as always great playing
@RichBischoff9 ай бұрын
Thanks man, not sure what that could be. Mine stopped working, and monoprice sent me a new one. I haven't had any rattling problems. Sounds more like something is loose in the chasis or cabinet.
@Wrguitar9419 ай бұрын
Ok the cabinet is solid I described the problem wrong it’s not a raddle when I hit that note I definitely hear a glass like rattle sounding I’m going to get the better tubes I’ve seen a video about them they are definitely cheap tubes stocked spelled rattle wrong sorry

Pulling mics about a foot from the speaker baffle helps a lot with the cheapo Celestion as does better preamp tubes. The 5w one is also an eyebrow raiser. Sometimes they go for $99 but $160 is still good. Up against the Bugera V5 5w combo the B wins, tho it's close.
@RaptorV1USA Жыл бұрын
i found one of the 5 watters locally for $90 as new.. homie jumped on a blues Jr he always wanted that popped up 3 weeks after he bought the lil one, its a great lil jam amp now ill look at if it can be upgraded any one popped a new speaker in one of the 5 -1 watt lil guys ?
@pabcrane11 ай бұрын
@@RaptorV1USA- there's a comment a bit closer to the top from TG_Sealey about doing just that. They say they put a WGS 8 inch AlNiCo in the 5 watter with massive improvement, clearer and louder. I haven't tried any of these amps but I do have two Laney LC15Rs which are somewhat similar to the one Rich has here. I replaced one speaker (an HH) with a Celestion Gold 10 and the other (a Tube 10) with a Greenback 10. They both sound fantastic (and an improvement in my view), they're also different from each other and complimentary. I also have an old Marshall Park solid state practice amp which I put a Celestion Eight 15 in - it was a marked improvement to the unlabeled generic speaker, even though the Eight 15 is on the budget end of Celestion. I imagine that the AlNiCo one mentioned above would be even better (I haven't tried the WGS eight inch speakers but their Reaper & ET65 I have are great). Sorry for such a long reply! Good luck with your speaker exploration. If I needed another small amp I would probably look at one like yours (called a Harley Benton Tube 5 where I live) with an AlNiCo 8 speaker.

@pabcrane11 ай бұрын
From what I've heard the Artist brand of amps in Australia have some models in common with these Monoprice (or Harley Benton here in Europe). They don't seem to have this 15 watt one Rich is demoing but its little 5 watt brother is the same as the Monoprice and HB Brad from Brad's Guitar Garage made a video having a look at the insides of the 5 watter compared to an Achilles Champ and a few sound samples. I think the Artist one is 250 Australian dollars I lived in Australia for quite a while so I understand what you mean about how much music gear costs - and I believe it's only gotten more than expensive in the last ten years!
