i watched these episodes all time as a seven and eight year old boy. My dad had been a Navy Hellcat and Douglass AD-6 Skyraider carrier aviator. When I was watching this we lived in Kingsville Tx and my dad was an advanced flight instructor at NAS Kingsville.

When I was a little kid, my dad and I watched this and 'Victory at Sea' on our little black and white TV. During the war, he was on an LCT that went from New Guinea through the Philippines to Japan - and an LCT is not meant to be an ocean-going vessel. Always had a lot of respect for those guys.

Our greatest generation! My dad was a Marine. He was in Guadalcanal and IwoJima and Korea. My uncle's were in the Army. Two of them hit the beach at Normandy. One was a navigator on a B-17. He was shot down and spent 3 yrs as a prisoner of war. He had a hard time whenever he saw a white picket fence. None of them ever talked about it. Thank you to all veterans of WW II. You saved the world!

Thanks for running this old series. I remember watching it as a kid. An uncle of mine served on the SILVERSIDES, and i think my parents were all for me watching this series. I think that there was a comparable series on West Point. At any rate, great old stuff.

I was in the Navy back in the 1980's, I was stationed aboard the USS Nimitz Aircraft CVN-68 Which is a very large ship. I just want to say this to all of you submariner's, past and present, you individuals are of a special breed of sound mind and body. The average person can't even imagine what you go through, yes we can watch shows like this, that give us a close look at life on-board a sub.But the reality is there are many things left out of the story for the TV viewer. But that's another story. However traveling underwater at a depth of 200 feet with enemy ships passing overhead, isn't for the faint of heart. You the Silent Service protect us everyday. I salute all of you for your service! Your families love and miss you.

My Uncle Gilbert was a Submariner in WW2. I'm an Army 1SG retired. What these sailors/submariners did was absolutely amazing. I was on 2 Combat deployments and left unscathed. We lost 52 Submarines in WW2.

Day and night comparing the old diesel/electric vs Nuclear. My BIL was a supply officer on the nuclear boats. They have climate control, unlimited water so they don't stink anymore, and are not limited in submerged time, and they can go just as fast or faster submerged as surfaced. He said the best part was hearing about all the surface sailors puking while they felt no wave action at all. Imagine how amazed this crew would be to sail on a modern sub!

In dry dock, a destroyer looked puny to a LST, but one sub that came in for drydock, an old WW 2 sub, allegedly the largest one made in the war, looked like a toy in the same drydock that accomdated the BB’s Missouri & New Jersey...

So entertaining and it almost looks like they could have made this in a closet space made to look like a sub. ... and then cue stock ocean footage. Good story telling like this and special effects aren't needed for the imagination to take over. I miss good story telling like this series!

Any TeeVee show would be a poor substitute, but if there were a single mom out their with a little boy and she had no male figure to set an example or any other alternative, she could sit him down in front of an episode of this everyday to get some lessons on how to be a good man.
