Jack Lord's acting was spectacular...he was a rough looking young man!

From Wikipedia: On 23 November 2006, Thanksgiving Day in the United States, the wreck of Perch was unexpectedly located by an international team of divers aboard MV Empress while searching for the wreck of the British heavy cruiser HMS Exeter northwest of Bawean Island in the Java Sea. The expedition had hoped to locate and photograph the wreck of Exeter, sunk in the same area on 1 March 1942. The wreck of Perch was illegally salvaged sometime between 2006 and 2016 and no longer exists. Unlike the Dutch and British ships near her, which also were scavenged illegally, Perch was not a war grave, as she had been abandoned by her crew without fatalities.

I wrote about the loss of Perch in my book, "The Allied Defense of the Malay Barrier, 1941-1942." Her sinking in this segment was pretty whitewashed and not particularly accurate. She was sunk by the destroyers Sazanami and Ushio. In reality, Perch's crew abandoned ship while under from the guns of Ushio, which fired a total of 3 salvos; Sazanami did not fire. Both destroyers then rolled depth charges as they passed over the sinking submarine as it disappeared under waves. Ushio then hove to and launched 2 whaleboats which rescued all of Perch's crew and transported them to Makassar.

Perch was not sunk by the IJN, she was Scuttled by her own crew due to damage.

If the USS Perch was lost, regardless of how, can someone shed a little more light on how she showed up in Korea in 1950 ? kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXK9pHt4mpqaeqs

I agree, Jack Lord gives one of the best performances as a Silent Service skipper. I thought it was Amatsukaze and Hatsukaze that sunk Perch but I may have gotten that from Hara's book and I think he gives himself to much credit for everything that happened while he commanded Amatsukaze.

I've watched several of these episodes and they all end badly. I wonder who could look forward to watching each new show (back when it first aired) knowing it would be about those poor guys dying, mostly because of a torpedo or boat malfunction instead of enemy action. Damn...

In reality the japanese commander that picked up perch crew wasnt so murderous. He behaved in the old way, saying "i m sorry for the loss of your ship" and giving the hand to the skipper. But maybe they was interrogated by someone else later on board or elsewhere when landed

The officers of the Perch refused to be "saved" from the sea as the Japanese commander refused to 'save' the enlisted sailors , my uncle was RC1 T Reh.

You’re viewpoint is spot on ! Given the prolonged problems with those Mark “14” torpedoes , I’ve come to the conclusion that this was the meeting of horribly poor engineering and sabotage .
