This is one of the best videos ever for me, due to my obsession with baritone ukuleles. I play mine with capo on fifth fret since I don’t want to learn the actual baritone chords. I have been seriously thinking about getting rid of all my other sized ukes because this sounds better than all them. I might keep one soprano tuned with the high g. Thanks Rich for this.

Capo on the second fret of baritone also sounds very good using regular ukulele chords. You play the same chord shapes with baritone as with concert, it's just DGBE chord names are different. 😊😊😊😊

That's hilarious. I have the exact opposite problem. I originally learned on the Baritone, but when I switch to other ukes, I mostly just use my tab software to transpose the chords so that the baritone uke chord shapes match the chords that are called for on the GCEA uke. So for example, if the song needs a G chord, after I transpose it to where it says 'D' on the tab for the song, and then I play what would be a D on my baritone uke. It turns out that that chord shape is a G on a GCEA uke. Learning Baritone first can create some troubles if you want to use other ukes and uke-like things. e.g. my banjolele, which is tenor scale and is GCEA

@@ŽỌỌŽṢ̌Z 😊😊Everyone should play and enjoy the ukulele they have. If they want another size, that's great too. My video here just provides one option! You can do the exact same thing with a tenor ukulele if it is tuned DGBE. For most people starting out, they should just be happy with the ukulele they have and learn to play it!! Rich

Just got a baritone and I’m in love. I think I’ll keep the tenor with a high G because that’s the original uke sound but my low voice suits the baritone with the metal strings. Only ukes I’ll ever need.

Agreed with all, Rich. Great video! Another cool thing about putting a capo in the 5th fret of a Bari is that it sounds sonically different than a tenor with the same tuning (GCEA). The bigger body of the Baritone lends to a bigger sound with way more resonance (and more comfortable playing 😊).

You can get a KALA (Makala line) Baritone for under $100 with some useful accessories, and it sounds far better than any sub-$100 instrument has a right to sound. When you're ready for an upgrade, your next step up is a KALA, too. I play a cedar topped acacia Baritone from KALA that sounds absolutely heavenly, and was still not wildly expensive. Maybe one of these days I spring for the Kala Nautilus (probably not, lol)

Capo's are wonderful things alright but they don't represent different ukulele's except for the fifth fret use. I suggest that you have two ukuleles only. The other uses are just changes in pitch. So a capo at the second fret, for example, is the key of A if you use G chords and D if you use C chords. However, you can simulate one other instrument with the baritone uke. If you are a banjo player, just lower the high E string to D and you have a banjo tuning or open G tuning. This allows you to play a whole bunch of fiddle tunes normally played on the banjo. I use this tuning all the time when jamming with Old Time fiddles or with Bluegrass players. I really enjoy my baritone uke.

@@richdavis4007 I'm so tickled Ginger got the bug too. Yes I play still. That happened on a Sunday afternoon. I literally could not put it down. The next day, a dreary dreary cold one here in Vermont, I stopped by the music shop and found a wonderful tenor uke. Then I spent the entire day at the hospital having endless tests. By 4 PM when I got out of there I went back to the music store and rented that tenor uke, and bought the Daily Uke book. On Thursday I called the owner, a long-time friend, and told him I did not want to rent it anymore. Shocked, he said, "WHY????" I told him because I wanted to buy it. So I went down there, bought it and the Leap Year uke book. The following Monday night at was aat my first uke club meeting and the rest it, as they say, history. I'm sure you two could find a local uke club down there and would have a blast playing and singing with others. Best always to both of you. Ave Maria. Cynthia in Vermont

There are pros and cons to both. If your voice is specially suited for GCEA or Low GCEA and your hands are not large like mine, concert could be the one for you. Some chord shapes require a finger stretch on baritone that don't at all on concert. The basic chords are very manageable, though. 😊😊😊

yup! i did something similar with a travel banjo. i put baritone uke strings on it (same scale), so i can tune it in standard banjo tuning. i built meself a little muffler for the chanterelle at the top. so with a flick of a wrist, i can tune the banjo d-string up to e, muffle the string at the top and strum and pick it like a baritone uke. very handy for busking! you earned yourself another subscriber! keep up the good work!

I like baritones, but they don't sound much like ukuleles, more like small guitars. Also they are usually not in reentrent tuning like the smaller ones, it is basically the four top strings on a guitar. If all you ever get is a baritone then you're not really getting the full ukulele experience (who does this anyway?)
@richdavis4007

I will give up GCEA tuning (high G) in exchange for DGBE, Low G,CEA, D-Tuning, and a couple other lovely tunings I've found. As lots of people know by now I'm not doing things exactly like everyone else! However, I notice guitar players, banjo players (the better ones) use capos. Yes, baritone ukulele is definitely a small four string guitar, but with capo transforms into whatever you want it to be! Is this a fad for me? Time will tell! Thanks, Keef. Rich

I presently have only soprano ukuleles. I find it difficult to stretch to reach certain 3-finger chords. I can't decide it I should get another soprano or a concert.
