Whitey Herzog, the Cardinal's manager and GM, practically gave away Keith Hernandez to the Mets for ineffective closer Neil Allen, because of Keith's drug use. Big mistake, but the Cards won the pennant in 85 and 87, while the Mets won it with Keith in 86. Huge rivalry between those two teams in the mid to late 80s.

THere's a brilliant interview of Larry David on the topic of how the show got going. Seinfeld says they are the same people, but David's story is completely different. The way he tells it, he couldn't handle the stress of the continuing obligation of writing entire episodes, even though the first order was 4 shows, then 8. It took a long time for them to be guaranteed entire seasons.

Jerry Seinfeld's voice and tone of comedy is just so whiny and monotone, and his material is really simple and kinda middle of the road and annoying. I never found him funny in the slightest, or with any type of edge. His show could be pretty funny at times though but I think it was mostly because of the writing (David) and some really talented side characters (mostly Richards and Knight, and also Louis-Dreyfus). I still think it's very overrated though.

In an interview for the american TV archives, Warren Littlefield claims that the first 4-episode order for Seinfeld was funded by cancelling a Bob Hope special (here Jerry claims it was funded by siphoning cash from "Saturday Night Wrestling"). In another part of this interview, Seinfeld claims that the marine biologist closing monologue was written the night before, while (in another interview) Jason Alexander claims that it was written on the day-of because the audience had a so-so reaction to the original ending (where the show closes with George walking out into the sea). It's funny how different people will have such divergent memories of the exact same events - and yet people will confidently claim X or Y happened rather than being uncertain. Goes to show how much your brain is interpolating from context when you are "remembering" something. Just remember that when someone is telling a story, the details are colour. They're probably not accurate but the story-teller can't leave them out because then the story is boring.

I can't help but wonder if "Seinfeld" would've made the headlines for ironically saving Frank Sinatra's life (had he survived), based on three factors: 1. The series finale coincide with his death. 2. His ambulance was able to arrive at his home and then to hospital very quickly in light traffic, due to many in Los Angeles indoors watching the finale. 3. The storyline centered on the four friends being thrown in prison for breaking the "Good Samaritan Law" (watching, instead of helping, an innocent bystander being car-jacked).
