A couple of things about the transfer portal discussion. 1. In the transfer portal era. ND also lost key players to the portal. For example, their leading WR last year was a West Coast-based Freshman who decided to transfer to UCLA. They had a Tight End in their rotation who transferred to Tennessee. Mid-season this year a corner-back on their two-deep announced that he was entering the portal (right before Benjamin Marrison was injured). 2. With 12 team play-offs a team competing for the Championship has to play 16 games (a team that loses their conference Championship would have to play 17). This means more injuries and players getting banged up. Depth matters more than ever and the portal can help with that. 3. The players that Notre Dame can recruit in the portal are limited due to self-imposed academic requirements so we see kids from Duke, Northwestern, Wake Forest, etc. 4. The kids in the portal were very helpful for Notre Dame last night, but think that the story should also include all the backups and underclassmen that have contributed. Notre Dame replaced Joe Alt at left tackle with a true Freshman Anthonie Knapp. When All-Amercan Cornerback Ben Morrison went down he was replaced by true-freshman Leonard Moore and didn't miss a beat. The list goes on. The play by second-stringers and third-stringers who stepped up and performed when called upon has been incredible.
@ElleYeah132 күн бұрын
ND has somehow made the Next Man In mentality a strength - while the personnel loses hurt, any so called drop off in talent has been mitigated by the pride, effort & grit of each subbed in player. You can tell these players love each other, MF, the staff, the university. So damn proud of this team & this program. Go ☘️!!!

Transfers or not, the culture at ND is different. And rather than fighting that like an egomaniac like Kelly does, Marcus embraces it and goes and finds star talents and sells them on why they should take the meaningful way to greatness. It doesn’t work for everyone and that’s fine. But Marcus doesn’t buy the idiotic idea that stars can’t be good students. And he even goes after the guys that didn’t go for the pitch first time, had time to mature and now want to transfer in. It’s quite amazing.

Freeman doesn't just take star players, he has staff that vets the player to make sure they're a fit for Notre Dame and the University of Notre Dame. That's basically why they only take players that are grad students. Very smart of Freeman in my opinion. Go Irish 🏈☘️☘️☘️☘️

@1Phepsiit’s not what I believe, it’s what know in this case. Every student athlete is evaluated. Part of that evaluation is always fit. But there is also some that don’t quite fit that in years past the University would have said “no way” that Freeman (and Kelly before him) is allowed to take on if he feels he can work with him. The difference between him and Kelly is he develops and improves prospects in every way. And when they don’t develop or when they prove to not be a fit, he is honest with them on why they aren’t getting minutes. Mickey is an example of that. So he’s able to cast a wider net, and furthermore, he’s able to make the most of those he catches.

Die hard ND fan here. Leonard is the worst QB at passing the ball weve ever had. Its wild how college football works
@jeffboyd78673 күн бұрын
But with RPO offenses now dominating, he doesn't need to be a 300 yd/game passer, or even 200 yd/game. He threw for 90 last night, yet his legs were the difference as the Georgia D had to stay mostly honest with the threat of him running. Also a diehard ND fan, and last night exorcised many demons. Obviously want them to win it all, but I think last night was a step toward returning to the late 80s/early 90s era of ND football even if they come up short next week or beyond
@menwithven81143 күн бұрын
@jeffboyd7867 oh I'm not complaining! That was their biggest victory of my adult life and Leonard is one of the main reasons. Its just crazy how offense in college football is so different then the NFL.

@jeffboyd7867 im 42 and have 2 brothers that have watched every ND football game together for 25 years. So all we know is disappointment. Unfortunately one of my brothers died from a brain tumor 2 months ago. I just spent the last hour at his grave playing the highlights of the game and told him we FINALLY won a big one!

They won ten games last yr. Have gotten better each year since freeman started btw this is his third yr period as a head coach. With the best first three years of ANY nd head coach. Notre dame was good last year and the year before. But THIS team is different. Different mentality this is a different team than week 2 and they’re showing it. Give them their dues. They’re not flashy but playing ball.

Why dont we just make it 32 regional college football programs. So each team can pull from every college in their region. And we can call it NFLC. NFL College.

As much as I hate the transfer portal, it’s going to hold college coaches more accountable for putting guys in the right spots to make plays, or they leave. Long time coming. Earn those seven figures!

Gunner did not “show he is a backup QB”. Beck didn’t have a good season, and Gunner played at least as well as Carson in that game.

I think people overlook notre dames mastery of the cfp. They pretty much hafta be top 8ish in the country and will get a bid. People goof on their schedule but its like most conference schedules now. Its not inconceivable that you play 6, 7 or more cupcakes when you're conference membership is double that

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that every single CFP team that got a first round bye lost. I think all those teams sitting for 2-3 weeks, and then playing teams just coming off playoff, win-or-out victories made the difference. I’d actually vote for an 8 team playoff, and eliminate the first round, but I know that won’t happen.
@ketolomics14 сағат бұрын
@Jviotr so in your assessment, Arizona State would certainly have knocked off Texas and Boise State would certainly have knocked off Penn State if only the playoff format wouldn’t have forced them to take a bye week? That’s quite a - hypothesis.
@NutCrud3 күн бұрын
Everyone devaluing the win because Georgia was playing a backup QB. After Mills and Cross got hurt, ND was playing without 4 starters on the defensive line. They’re out their 1st round corner and you’re #3 corner going into the season. Also missing 2 starters on the offensive line. People say ND isn’t good enough, beats good team, then suddenly well that team wasn’t very good.
@kbrewski13 күн бұрын
You knew all the Irish haters would come up with lame excuses and idiocy. Losing Riley Mills in the Indiana game, our best D player, was just as big a loss. Plus, Gunner actually played pretty well.

It's just so amazing how everyone is focused on the ND transfers as if it's not really ND. Almost as if there weren't any transfers on any of the other teams. Bottom line, ND beat Georgia, the SEC champs.
