The 40 is a fun athletic spectacle to watch and Worthy's run was a great example of that. The NFL network has a vested interest in having people believe it is important because they want eyeballs on their broadcast. The reality from a scouting perspective is that with GPS technology teams already know who the fastest players are (with pads on, which matters a lot more) so the 40 really isn't necessary anymore from an evaluation standpoint. If the only route Worthy ever runs is going 40 yards in a straight line I guess he's going to be a good at that. But we continue to see people with refined route running dominate the league. even those that run in the 4.5/6 range (see Davante Adams, Keenan Allen etc.). It's definitely a good thing to have elite straight line speed, it just isn't predictive of who will be a great football player (see John Ross).

40 times are interesting to talk about & it makes for good TV content however it doesn't mean much of nothing. John Ross hasn't done much of anything in the NFL and I'm not even sure he's still in the league. Jerry Rice ran a 4.71 and is the GOAT. You have some guys like Bo and Deion who were blazing fast but knew how to use their speed & others who use it as a crutch but can't play dead. I'd like to know more about how he is as a prospect than his 40 time honestly because football isn't played in a straight line.

Funnily enough I almost see running this fast as a negative. Outside of CJ2K most players with this sort of speed never work out. I see it as to have a body that can run that fast you probably had to sacrifice in other areas and if you look at all the top performers of the 40 yard dash over the years you'll see that most aren't well rounded players never lived up to the hype.
