Vin was just that type of old school polite where if you hadn't seen him in a while he wouldn't assume you remembered who he was. Kinda Willie's opposite, honestly lol. But these two definitely met before this. There are photos of Vin interviewing Willie back in his playing days. That being said, there was a reverence given to not fraternizing with the "enemy" back then that doesn't exist now.

@@cnyweathertainment5075 There are some intangibles between the two the puts Willie ahead of Aaron. But there is one thing that can't be ignored. Aaron played his entire career in real hitters parks, while Willie played ar Candlestick that is known as just one of the least hitter friendly stadiums in history. Also, Willie played CF not a corner position.

@@stevenmeyer9674 Willie began his career at the Polo Grounds. This ballpark had its share of quirks. The "unofficial" distances (never marked on the wall) down the left and right field lines were 279 and 258 feet (85 and 79 m) respectively, but there was a 21-foot (6.4 m) overhang in left field, which often intercepted fly balls that would otherwise have been catchable and turned them into home runs. Contrasting with the short distances down the foul lines were the 450-foot distances to deepest left and right center (the gaps); the base of the straightaway centerfield clubhouse stood 483 feet from home plate, up a 58-foot runway from the grandstand corners on either side of the clubhouse (these corners were themselves 425 feet (130 m) from home plate). The famous photo of The catch made by Willie Mays in the 1954 World Series against Vic Wertz of the Cleveland Indians occurred immediately in front of the "batter's eye", a metal screen atop the grandstand wall directly to the right of the centerfield runway. It would have been a home run in several other ballparks of the time as well as in most of today's modern ballparks. The bullpens were actually in play, in the left and right center field gaps. The outfield sloped downward from the infield, and people in the dugouts often could only see the top half of the outfielders. Ebbets Field, home of the Dodgers was just as quirky, but that’s another story.
@Lava19646 ай бұрын
What are Mays' pitching stats? He doesn't have any! In contrast, Babe Ruth was the best lefthanded pitcher in the AL in the 1910s. He may have won the Cy Young Award in 1916--had it existed.

Willie hit 660 home runs, 54 short of Ruth. But in Candlestick park all those years, Willie was robbed of many home runs due to the winds that blew in from left field. For my money, the greatest all around player of all time.
@Rick_King6 ай бұрын
Also, during the Bonds era, they installed a chain link in the outfield to make it easier to hit homers. And Aaron, God bless him, played in the launching pad in Atlanta. Mays is truly the greatest of all time. And so is Vinnie!

Willie Mays was my favorite player growing up in the 1960’s even though most of my friends favored Mickey Mantle. I copied his batting stance, but my dad forbade me from any “basket” catches. What a career he had. He and Babe Ruth. Take your pick for 1 and 2 all time.

@TRRyan6 ай бұрын
It's nonsense to say these two had never met before this. In the extended version of this encounter in 2016, Willie says to Vin, "You took care of me when I used to play in L.A. all the time," though we don't learn of those specifics from half a century prior. Besides, do you really think Scully would call Mays "Buck" if they had not previously met each other? Come on.

Great video but I don't think it's the first time they met. That's just Vin being Vin, introducing himself, never assuming people know or remember him,. He even called Willie by his nickname, "Buck", which I doubt he'd do if he didn't know him. Keep in mind, Vin followed Willie his whole career, from the NY Giants to the SF Giants to the NY Mets, not to mention Spring Training, World Series and All Star games Vin called that featured Willie not to mention the decades of pregame shows Vin did that surely would have featured Willie many times, plus the off season awards banquets and MLB hall of fame induction ceremonies, so again, great video, but this would have been the last time they met not the first.

And it was because of baseball players like Willie Mays Roberto Clementie Mickey Mantle Roger Maris Brooks Robinson Johnny Bench Pete Rose Bob Gibson just too name a few how they played their positions ! Charge the ball don't let it eat you up waiting for it! Get your body behind those ground balls down on one knee ! Field those grounders two hands on your glove cstching those fly balls! Pay attention to the runners know where you are throwing the ball and to whom !

NO WAY is this the first time they met. Vin interviewed him the year they met in New York City when he was the Dodger broadcaster and Willie a rookie. They saw each other and spoke hundreds and hundreds of times at Hall of Fame functions, banquets, the Polo Grounds, Ebbets Field, Seal Stadium, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Candlestick Park, Dodger Stadium, Shea Stadium and across America for over 60 years. To imply this is the first time these two great men met is ludicrous and ignorant. Absurd.
