The rule that you can't hit a qb after a pick is insanity. If that's the case the qb shouldn't be able to attempt the tackle the ball carrier. They should have to automatically run to the opposite sideline. I'm glad that wasn't called on Goff. It was a clean hit and that's what you get for trying to stop the guy. What a joke.

@cohoanglervancouverwa675512 сағат бұрын
Good idea but it won’t work. For example pass interference is not a 15 yard penalty. It’s a spot foul. It could be a one yard penalty, depending on the spot of the foul. Any defensive penalty inside the 15 yard line is never a 15 yard penalty. It’s half the distance to the goal line. And review would never occur if a 15 yard penalty (or any distance) should have been called but wasn’t. It might work if there were a category of “major penalties” which could be reviewed but it would still be difficult.

@@cohoanglervancouverwa6755, every pass interference call should be something that's looked into. Whether its a 15, yard penalty or a "New Set of Downs" penalty, it should be supported by what the replay reveals. Not what the referees determine.

@ Okay but should that include both DPI and OPI? Only one of which includes a new set of downs. And the issue of a major penalty that should have been called but wasn’t is still unresolved. Recall that the NFL tried to address that issue after the no call for DPI in the playoff game between the Rams and the Saints a few years back. They quickly discarded it after one season. I’m not trying to poke holes in the potential solutions, rather I’m just trying to emphasize that it’s more complicated than it might seem.

I’m a college football official and this is the way it works. The league will always publicly defend the officials but every single play is graded for every official. They are graded on both calls and no calls, every play there are decisions to make and each decision is graded. NFL officials have 98%+ accuracy which is insane at the speed of the game. And when they do make mistakes, they are punished for it. You lose playoff eligibility, may have to do extra training in the offseason, or even be fired. Refs are fired from the league every year but nobody notices because it’s never the white hat because they are extremely good at what they do

This segment is Goodell making a statement. I am making a political statement here that the NFL is much like another autocratic institution in this country. I don't care what side of the fence you're on there, but I can't imagine too many people rooting for the NFL throughout this playoff round and new round of scrutiny. Goodell's message: If you don't like it, there's the door, otherwise shut up and take it. That message is for everybody, including media commentators during the broadcast, no less. So I'm sure they will hear it from above, but I think Troy Aikman already knows that as he's saying it. Good for him. That's credibility. I like that. I hold him in high esteem for his candor on national TV. Yes, I'm making a larger statement here, that what's blurted out goes against the narrative, so why promote a losing narrative to begin with? What coalition of interests is being served by it? Does that coalition have more rights and more say than everyone else? You can't just get away with everything forever and expect everybody to just shut up and take it. Somebody's going to say something eventually. Consensus reaches a critical mass, and thus a change happens because people in high places in their respective institutions disrespected the game for too long. Remember Omar from The Wire saying to McNulty in the cemetery, ["...personally, I don't think the game should be played like that..."] Omar was a killer, but a man has to have a code, no doubt. Otherwise, the game isn't worth watching or playing. The story on The Wire was that high rollers, and thus their institutions, were selling out instead of sticking to what they should be. Institutional failure was the recurring theme on that show. Somebody's selling out in the NFL, and Goodell's emblematic of that. Officials aren't allowed to call a straight game anymore. They're paying people to spin it, but nobody's fooling anybody. The exiting regime drew ever more criticism from a broader coalition of interests. That's why they lost. And that's why there's a new president today. Same thing goes for the NFL, with influences as insidious, perhaps with regard to a number of munny things operationally (read: Vegas.) If the Bills win...

Mike’s not wrong that the refs are not bough….but he’s wrong about the point and purpose. The league shouldn’t be concerned about protecting the decision of the officials. People don’t watch officials. There’s nothing to protect there but their integrity. Not admitting wrong and doing anything to prevent it in the future is not only arrogant, it’s 100% enabling the criticism they are receiving as well as the un-athletic and unsportsmanlike behaviors of players like Patrick Mahomes to draw a flag versus playing the actual game. The more he builds disrespect from his opponents, the sooner he’s really going to get gobsmacked and injured out of anger, then the league will have their “efforts to protect the QB’s” backfire on them. Do better. If an ex player in a booth can see when it’s wrong, the league can fix this. Also, is Mike still on the payroll? He’s got a ton of respect for the refs, not much for the fans who pay for it.

Mike Pereira is an example of why NFL refereeing has sucked and will continue to suck for the foreseeable future. Many of the calls aren't 'bang bang' calls. Holding, false starts, hip drop tackles, and face masks can often linger more than a split second. And when someone with an attitude like Pereira's, willing to give refuge to the incompetent, he corrupts the game without being themselves explicitly corrupt. Every and all technology that can be used to improve the officiating should be implemented if they're concerned about eliminating the stink that's come off of the refs' performances.

I think we can all acknowledge that officiating such a fast sport in real time is insanely difficult, but use replay to try to clean up the stuff that is obvious at home and help the officials on the field. If the entire sporting world can see something is wrong and not only does it stay wrong after replays, but the NFL then tries to tell us it's right, you really are just giving ammo to all the conspiracy theorists out there, and that's not good for the game.

WHY does the ref even need to make a "snap decision" as he puts it? Why can't the confer, or ask for a replay assistance. Happens in all the other sports? AND how does the ref make snap decisions with such unchallenged authority? Oh because he's been endowed with the power, and is assumed to be infalable? NEXT, the make up call BS, fine you don't believe it happens. Cause " if there were two bad calls in one game, they'd be fired" as he said. Umm no, there has been hundreds of instances in which multiple bad calls were made, not one firing tho? BUT WAIT, only 6 mins in and already contradicting himself? So should those TWO (as in the aforementioned 2) have been made. Perrera definitively answers NO. so two bad calls were made in the same game? So they'll be fired as per your suggestion, correct? This guy.... And then Rich having the audacity, and i love rich, he's the only taking head i listen to pause of David Byrne, Rich has the audacity to say "remember when we'd have those back and forths and the rules and I'd push back, and so on...." Then just let this guy make his own narrative for 20 mins? Really?

Just 2 hand touch the QBs to keep them safe, if that's what the NFL wants. If that is too rough, go 1 hand touch. Safety 1 league.

Translation: The refs aren't smart enough to be nefarious, but some of them are just bad at their jobs or biased for specific players.

There should be a human element to "Ref" a game. There should be some questionable stuff...now we're picking fly poop out of the pepper. Also, I don't need funky calls to hate the Chiefs, I hate them for who they are. Thanks, appreciated.

I'm sorry, this guy is absolutely lying! The proof is in the pudding. It's all on tape. It isn't just Mahomes either. People not tackling chiefs players, not calling penalties on chiefs defense for hip drop tackles. Then, the running out of bounds to help Vegas! The chiefs get those calls and non calls all day everyday. No one else gets calls the Mahomes and the chiefs

Are you really so mad about a call in the 3rd quarter on a 1st down, in a game that wasn’t close? Or are you mad it was the Chiefs? These calls happen every week, way worse calls in fact. And it is Rodger, crybaby.

Wait.. one minute you say it happens to fast to tell then you say it should not have been called because and only because we have slow motion replay! So STOP any replays that are slow motion... Or... pick up flags after slow mo replay. You cant have it both ways.
@TheSargeGX4315 сағат бұрын
Have Mike review the Hit vs Heyward and another Defensive player and Burrow compared to the recent hits against Mahomes in the Houston game. Burrow had 2 defensive players drive him into the ground and no flag vs the 2 flags Mahomes got against Houston. Explain why theirs no flag on driving Burrow into the ground and landing on him? Mahomes gets the flags because he’s good a flopping and making light contact look worse than it really is.

During this episode, Rich needed to read the actual rule in the NFL rulebook. If you read the rule, both penalties should have been called.
