For such a great song, it's surprising only Richie Havens does it with heart felt soul (that I've been able to find on you tube). Everybody else tries to do it with a "flair" instead of true feeling. I searched for almost 2 hours; lots of beautiful voices but commercialized, even back to the '30s.

I saw Richie a bunch of times in the 80s. No, I would'nt have been a teenager yet in the swamp, BUT! Indoors (DC,eg) or the Bandshell in Boulder, Co, eg- he's been doing it all well. I don't know what happened to the Paul Williams who used to be sitting down & ripping out those leads: notes 'n chords like throwing lightning bolts to the crowds- but again, what a great organic sound! & sincerely done covers all day long but you wouldn't know it.

None of the covers are as good as this, not that I've found anyhow and I've seen and heard a whole lot of 'em, some were decent but this just satisfies deeply in a way no covers I'm aware of do. And who, at some point in their life, has not felt like a motherless child, a leaf at the mercy of the wind, a rudderless riverboat lost at sea, a feather in a hurricane?!? The trick is not to cling, just let go like leaves of fall.
