Hands down the best lick lesson I’ve come across. 1. plays the lick to speed, so you know if you even want to try to learn it.. and don’t have to search around for it within the vid. 2. Breaks the lick into parts but more importantly repeats each step from the beginning as he adds the next section. 3. Doesn’t jumble up the lesson with note names. String and fret number is all you need. 4. Replays the full lick to speed or close to it. Awesome vid man, instant subscribe and I’m telling all my buddies!! 🤘 🤙

Don't mistake the look of that for the wrong type of tension, serious RSI can result from the tensing up of the forearm, especially in the elbow. Basically play at a speed where there is little tension and stay on that speed for 2 weeks, every day 5 minutes continuously shaking out when the fatigue builds up, after a couple of weeks try increasing by say 20bpm and stay on that new speed until it feels effortless.

The trick to Legato is to hammer down hard and from a height at first, exaggerating almost but hitting down positively. I noticed in my teaching many years ago that students who hammer down weakly not only get less of a tone out of the technique, but also significant timing problems. So hit down harder, but frequently shake off, as the speed increases over the months, the technique should stabilize in timing and you will use less energy to execute the ideas.

Like bruce lee's famous 1 inch punch, he would have started far away from the board as a beginner, gradually reducing the distance. The tension to be aware of is not the hand itself, but the forearm muscles. My hand is fully relaxed at full speed although it is fully stretched and with whole step slides it is flexed to reach and hover above the notes.
