Excellent pictures and explanation. Two additional points. The plate which goes at the bottom front of the battery to hold in down should have the two prongs pointed back toward the rear of the car. These two prongs engage with spots of the VW battery which make it very secure. A PROBLEM: It is very difficult to get the plate screwed in place without cross-threading the screw. It should be handled very delicately. My problem is that someone else before me has always cross-threaded already, thus making it a real struggle to get it right.

I bet its easier to install a cold air intake than changing a battery on a jetta LOL Nice video Rich very instructional. By the way I got a VW Passat lying at my house and want to fix it. It runs but need help. The oil pressure light comes on what could it be and was wondering how do you know if it has the turbo on it. The eninge is a 1.8T but i dont think he took the turbo out. Would it run without the turbo. I dont thinks so right? Thanks. My passat needs a lot of work done LOL

I lost the battery cover to my Jetta will that cause any issues? I don't remember seeing any seals on the cover so I don't think it was there to keep out rain mostly to keep the unsightly view of a battery away but will rain cause any issues if the cover is not in place?

Thank you for the video it was supper helpful! Is it a problem if the replacement battery I have is too tall? Everything seems to work fine, and it was the recommended replacement for my 2.0L, but I can't get the top cover back on because overall the battery is about 1cm to tall. =(

How important is the hold down bolt? When putting it back in it slipped and fell down into the car somewhere. I doubt I'll be able to retrieve it easily. Does the battery really knock around that much while driving? None of the other cars I've had used a similar bolt.

Do you lose all the radio coding and other stuff by disconnecting the battery, don't you need to use a 9volt pp3 or some other method to bridge the leads and prevent the codes from being lost or did you just put them all back in. The reason I ask is I have a used car and need to change the battery but have no codes

Why does the negative terminal only have one 10mm bolt as opposed to the positive terminal that has two 10mm bolts to hold it down? My Jetta is in the same condition, and every Jetta battery removal video tutorial I have watched so far appears to be the same, but I'm wondering if it's another missing part in my car.

Question: (Great video by the way! Simplifies it a lot Thank you!) I have a challenge not addressed... the hold-down bolt at the bottom of the battery is rusted and just spins when I turn it with the 13mm socket. So the battery can't be removed until that hold down is undone. It seems to be on a platter. My guess is the nut is welded to that platter and the bolt threads into it... I can't seem to find a way to get a wrench up under the platter. HELP! What can be done. Thanks.

Hey Rich... ah you don't have one in the shop... Well, its in your video at the 3:36 minute mark. That is exactly what is going on. The 13mm socket you have on the end of your ratchet is undoing the hold-down bracket. The nut is welded on the bottom of the base the battery sits upon, and when the bolt is loosened the bracket and bolt come off. Under normal circumstances the nut stays in place. However, mine has rusted off and won't loosen. Just rotates as the ratchet is turned. :( The battery is stuck. I think I will somehow drill out the bolt and bracket. Phrased another way... How can one remove the base the battery sits upon?

Reminds me of when my dad was trying to get the battery out of his car once. He's an older fellow, never owned a modern car (2000 or up) before that one, and after a while of messing with all the plastic and stuff they surrounded the battery with, he ended up pulling it all out and throwing it away. Still makes me laugh.

Exasperating to take the first plastic part off after removing the screws, without breaking the tab since "pushing the little part in" was a no-go. Broke. Pushed the now-exposed metal clip in, snapped off and went flying. Even with broken off plastic part, and missing metal clip, still could not figure how to re-install it, except by accident when forcing. If could do over again, would take off all four screws then try to wiggle both plastic pieces off simultaneously. Maybe nothing would break then!?
